View Full Version : Anyone got any tips for getting the dog to come inside? narla 31-12-2008, 17:19 my dog won't come inside and its freezing, have tried knocking on my own door, jangling the lead, shouting him, etc etc Its cold ouside and i am really worried about him - he does this alot but tonight its just too cold! daftlad 31-12-2008, 17:21 have you tried danglin a bit of food narla 31-12-2008, 17:22 yes i have put it near him and made a trail - he gets so close but not enough! i don't want to use any force because he is really nervous Clare85 31-12-2008, 17:22 I don't know anything about dogs but is it ill? Just go outside and pick him up (if he doesn't weigh a ton!) narla 31-12-2008, 17:26 he's 6 stone! its a bit complicated - we think his last owner chained him up. hes so affectionate and lovely - except in these situations. if you go near him he shakes from head to foot and turns into a different dog daftlad 31-12-2008, 17:28 Is there another dog around you can get in the house. If your dog smells another dog that should work narla 31-12-2008, 17:37 we have another dog who is happy and warm inside! tried getting our neighbour to knock on the door (cos he knows its me when i do it!) but that didn't work. Gonna try driving my car off the drive and back on again - that sometimes helps! narla 31-12-2008, 17:47 after driving on and off drive without sucess he has come in of his own accord! would be interested if anyone experiences similar things with their otherwise well behaved dogs. Think he might has some sort of doggy post traumatic stress disorder! Amyrach 31-12-2008, 18:10 what dog is it narla shihtzumad 31-12-2008, 19:10 so glad he his in out of the cold, i feel so sorry for all the stray/lost/etc animals in this cold weather they don't deserve it, they need a warm house and comfy bed doll72 31-12-2008, 21:12 after driving on and off drive without sucess he has come in of his own accord! would be interested if anyone experiences similar things with their otherwise well behaved dogs. Think he might has some sort of doggy post traumatic stress disorder! i know this sounds stupid but my dog lizzy does the same thing but only on a sunday rest of the week no probs. dosnt matter if its raining or snowing she will not come in she just lays there shaking.would love to know why she does it only on a sunday:hihi: Strix 31-12-2008, 21:42 We had a foster dog with the same problem - which she continued for some time in her new home She'd been a yard dog (we believe), so once in a while she seemed to become overwhelmed by having a nice warm house, toys, nobody burning her with cigarettes, regular meals... and she'd ask to go sit outside in the rain - presumably as she craved something familiar when she was ready she'd come back in if your dog is nervous, try not to worry too much, and try not to stress him out during these phases - let him come in in his own time. If it's possible, leave the door open so he can come in when it suits him (I know it's freezing at the moment, but can you stand the kitchen getting cold if you shut the other door?). Maybe hang a blanket over the doorway so you keep the heat in but he can get in easily It does get easier, honest ;) narla 01-01-2009, 15:39 we got our dog when he was one - he was chained up outside. he is not particularly nervous. His last owner was female and so am i - he behaves like that with me but not with my husband so i wonder if my voice reminds him of his old owner. Strix 02-01-2009, 22:46 you never know what triggers a dog over old hang ups - you just have to learn as you go unfortunately it may sound daft, but don't talk to him in a high pitched voice, try dropping your tone a couple of octaves and speaking firmly to him without shouting or speaking sharply  |
