My son has just been prescribed Strattera for ADHD and I was wondering if anyone else had children who are/were taking it?
It's a non stimulant/non adictive alternative to Ritalin and has been used inthe UK for the last 2 0r 3 years I think.
Any info gratefully received.
Thanks!

Hi and thanks for replying.
It was 2 years ago that I made this post lol! Strattera was a total disaster for him. He became depressed and did nothing but cry and want to kill himself. Not good for an 8 year old. After about 6 month we decided to stop it as it had no positive effects at all. He's now on Risperidone and Sertraline for OCD and Aspergers and may well be starting on Ritalin or similar in the near future.
Oh my god, dont accept ANY medication or drugs for ADD/ADHD it will make things worse in years to come... and if they get older and decide to go off the medication, things will be amplified and worse, Ritalin is one of the bad ones.... honestly...
I was 'diagnosed' ADHD when i was about 6, and i was never put on anything to control it, theres other ways, my mom fought through it and I can now control it, and I know how to cope with things now.. anyone who gives thier kids things for ADD/ADHD, in my eyes have failed as parents... and im pretty sure that if my mom had done that when I was younger, I would have disowned her by now.
see this other post I made on another thread.. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=2366885&postcount=31
ADD and ADHD are overdiagnosed all over the world. It has been fashionable.
There is a tendency to work from the list of symptoms in classifications like DSM-IV and to conclude that a child or adult has it if they or their family report enough of the symptoms, and to overlook the list of other disorders that are more common and can produce similar symptoms that need to be excluded before ADD can be diagnosed.
There is now a reaction to this overdiagnosis suggesting the condition does not exist. It exists - it is just less common than affective disorders, Bipolar spectrum disorders and Autistic spectrum disorders, and stress induced symptoms that can produce a similar picture.
The genuine cases usually do well on dexamphetamine or methyl phenidate, and there seems to be little need for expensive options like Strattera, if the diagnosis is made with proper care.
