View Full Version : If you're 90 and gay does it matter ?
Greybeard 30-12-2008, 11:17 Well it could if you want any help from the council. It seems that full disclosure of sexual orientation is now a requirement for any funding councils may provide for the support of old people.
I'd rather be dead than ask the nosey jobsworths for any help but if push comes to shove I'm gonna say 'gay'...just to be on the safe side.

archaeobard 30-12-2008, 11:23 I think they ask for your orientation so they don't inadvertantly discriminate against any individual based on their sexuality.
Greybeard 30-12-2008, 11:46 But if they don't know your 'orientation' they have no grounds to discriminate.
You can usually tell visually that someone is male/female or black/white but not their sexual orientation - I suspect they want to know so they can discriminate.
ladyacademic 30-12-2008, 11:53 When I have to answer such questions, I tick "other" and then write in "NOYB" It's the only way I can find to actually register my objection to intrusive questions.
It works both ways though. If you are white, straight and male you have no chance of getting in the fire brigade.
Actively seeking people with disabilities discriminates against able bodied people.
Any applicant should be judged on their suitability for the job.

How many black, gay females are in the Fire Brigade?

Hoards of them, they are everywhere, pesky lesbian firefighters hiding in the shadows with really big hoses...:suspect:

ahhh but that would be too easy a solution, let's complicate it and fill a quota to show we are open to anyone, no matter how rubbish they are for the job.

If they weren't aware of something then how could they inadvertently or otherwise discriminate against it.
JFKvsNixon 30-12-2008, 12:57 Any applicant should be judged on their suitability for the job.
If this actually happened in the first place their wouldn't be any need to keep an eye on any potential discrimination.

Because the individual may feel discriminated against regardless of whether they have been or not. I once had a lady tell me I was being racist when she didn't get what she wanted over the phone. She had a Sheffield accent and I did not know her name, so I had no idea she was of an ethnic origin, yet she accused me of being racist. She could have been green with pink spots and I would have treated her the same. It's all down to someone's own perception of a situation.

I'll be sure to tell that to the lad who used to work in my office who ticks all those boxes and left to pursue a career in...
...can you guess where?...
..yes, I think you've got it...
the Fire Service.

I think I'm going to pursue a career in arson! :D
cressida 30-12-2008, 22:23 If someone asked me what sexual orientation I was I'd reply 'is it your business?'
All these questions about ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation deserve only one response, and that is refuse to answer them
If we all do that on every occasion the message will eventually get through and all this nonsense will stop.
Because we are all people, humans, individuals, whatever you like to call us and nothing else is relevant, we should all be treated exactly the same.

I agree entirely.
I always put a big line through these types of questions.
It's none of their damned business what colour I am or what I choose to do with my private life.

So, someone in a wheelchair should be treated the same as an "able-bodied" person?

Right, so a man with severe arthritis should be made to get up to a 2nd floor office and no lift provided? No, you put his office on the ground floor or get a lift or something ACCOMMODATING.
People get really confused as to the definition of equality. Equality is NOT ABOUT TREATING PEOPLE 'THE SAME' but allowing them to work/be compared in an interview ON A 'LEVEL PLAYING FIELD' TO EVERYONE ELSE.
Nobody is saying 'postivie discrimination', but if you're say wanting to get into an industry that's made tough to get into by a perceived stereotype (say, white older males), then surely having proof of interviewees coming from all backgrounds will negate any people saying you discriminate?
