View Full Version : How can I stop cats from coming onto our garden?

Does anybody know how I can stop these retched cats coming onto our garden. They just use it as their own personal litter tray. I do like cats but when they constantly use the garden as their toilet they become annoying. My dog stands at the kitchen door whining at them and nearly knocks himself out by trying to run through the door to chase them. Any ideas anyone?

Erm... let the dog out? :D

I would let the dog out but the garden is not dog proof yet and he would probably escape somehow through the fence.

Get the garden fenced this weekend. I did mine quite cheaply (and surprisingly easily) with those rolls of green wire fencing that you attach to metal posts. Spend a couple of hours doing that, wind the dog up a bit then open the door and watch the fun!!!

PS - the garden at my house was the neighbourhood cat toilet till I got my two dogs. Never seen one since! :hihi:

The sentiment on the irrisponsible dog/poo/owners thread is that they should pick up excrement from pavements where it can be trodden on.

A richard the third on a pavement can be avoided.

I find that neighbours cats constantly cr*p in my garden AND bury it 2cm under the surface so I get it down my fingernails when I'm weeding or planting.

Cat owners should knock on neighbours doors & offer to do some gardening for them, clearing away their own moggies faecal calling card

a well aimed hosepipe always does the trick too....

You might have a problem marrying the offending turd to the cat in question!:D

It is a pain though, we put gravel down at the end of the garden to discourage weeds and the little blighters started turning up en masse to use the largest litter tray in S6!:gag:

I once heard of an old woman who kept a bucket of water by the backdoor. She got one cat with it and found that the mere sight of the thing was a deterrant to the rest of the feline population.

Do what you need to in order to stop the problem, but please don't harm the cats while you're at it.

No matching probs - if you've got a cat every turd is potentially yours. Take one, any one, just get them off my garden. ;)

We've just got a new puppy & I'm gonna be training him in the art of cat stalking :D

my mates mother hates cats too poping into her garden,
she has tryd the cats that u stick in garden that ment to scare other cats off... a light that flashes and make a noise only they can hear..spiky posts u can legally get to put on top off fences.. and also all smelly liquids from shops.
but none of these worked till she saw a program on sky last year about lion poo, its work as smaller cats smell a bigger cat and it stops then wanting to go in.. it is a bit costly to buy but it did help in end,and she has not had one cat in her garden since.

One way is to buy some citrus smelly oil. Cats do not like the smell of citrus so if you pile some pebbles where the cats like to poo and add the oil onto the pebbles. They will keep away. You have to re-do after a heavy rain fall. Or you can stick lemons around your garden in affected areas.. Works for us.

I have 2 cats who do unfortunately poo in my neighbours gardens. I have advised them to squirt them with hose pipe etc..with my permission. But they do favour a quiet spot in the corner of my garden which i keep the soil nice and loose and they use that more often than not. If you shout and hiss at a cat to get off your garden they will ignore you after a while.

A more portable and possibly silly idea inspired by MsB's post would be to get a supersoaker, you could mount a sniper's nest in the undergrowth and then just as the kitty adopts the position.......... Whammo! a well aimed jet of H2O right up moggy's nether bits. Kind of a pre-bidet for cats.

This made me laugh out loud Don!

We've had the same problem. Our neighbor across the street had three cats who used the flower beds in front of our house as their personal toilets. It got to the point where we didn't dare dig there unless it was with a shovel. Never mind bare hands! :gag:

We talked to him about it, and he suggested the super soaker solution. Which was no help. Like I have all the time in the world to sit by my door waiting for his cats to show up?

The cats were scared of our dog, but the dogs not allowed to run loose in the front yard. And the cats knew it. This continued for years until he finally moved. And took his damn cats with him. After he left, we decided to dig up some old plants and bushes there and replant. We also disposed of TONS of cat crap! This was in addition to all the poop we picked up over the years while the cats were still living there. Disgusting.

Im sorry. I like cats. I'd never do anything to harm one. But people who let their cats run loose and be a nuisance are being unfair to their neighbors. The guy I mentioned above at one time had four cats. He got into it with the old biddy next door to him, and threatened to sue her because she poisoned one of his cats. She had talked to him about the mess his pets were making in her yard, and he did nothing. Just the old, "my cats are allowed to run free, keeping them inside is cruel". Being poisoned by an irate neighbor is cruel, too.

Most people who allow their cats to have this freedom don't know where they go, or what they do, where they're pooping, or what dangers they're exposed to.

We put mousetraps under their favorite plants, but they quickly learned to poop right next to it. We tried coffee grounds, that kitty-b-gone stuff, everything. The only thing that worked was the cats leaving town.

Now then, now then. Msb nipped home at lunchtime to enjoy copious amount of sunshine in about 45 mins in garden. Whilst there she admired her new turf and read April copy of 'Gardeners World' magazine. Guess what was advertised in a full page ad in that very same tome?

A plant which cats hate!!! I have brought the mag in to work with me so whilst I should be busy doing 'stuff' here, instead I will share this knowledge with you. Cos I'm good like that.

Its called 'Coleus Canina', is low growing, attractive foliage and spikes of pretty blue flowers in Summer. Sounds good enough already eh? But, here's the best bit - it also has (and I quote)

'a stench that cats can't stand'....!! :D :heyhey:

You can buy 6 plants for £7.99 or 12 for £12.99 from the magazine so if anyone wants one or more let me know and I will pass on the details.

Apparently it 'caused a sensation last season in Germany when it was launched as the Pxxx-Off! Plant!'

or - call the debit/credit card orderline on 01424 797 999.

Do let me know how you get one - in the meantime I am gonna be doing hose-pipe practice this evening whilst watering my turf...:heyhey:

I have that problem but am experimenting with orange peel.
A couple of cats use my rose bed which I realised after attempting to do some weeding - so now whenever we have finished eating oranges (we eat loads now) we tear the peel into smallish pieces and sprinkle it around the garden. It's the citrus element they don't like as has already been mentioned.

They don't like vinegar!!! put a few small pots of vinegar around the edge of your garden - they'll hate it.

i love cats really!!! :D

"scent off" has been reported to be good by customers either the granules or the buds .... a lot of people buy moth balls and they say they really work ... or Jeyes Bin Fresh is supposed to be good .. sprinkled around your most precious plants ...

Again - it's the aroma cats don't like ... also moth balls are good for keeping squirrels at bay too, so they tell me!

Garlic powder, diluted in a watering can and sprinkled around the garden works apparently.
Not enough so you can smell it, but enough for the cats to stop bothering.

It's also suppose to keep dogs off your flower beds. It smells like skunks. I should have known better, our dogs are labradors - they dug up the plants and ate them!

Guard turrets mounted at each corner of the ggarden ...

I have a dog and still get cats on thegarden - what is left of it anyhow.

Tried all the things suggested but to no avail. The cats just look at me smugly as if to say - "Pull the other one".

Still - I am a cat lover and as long as they do not molest my dog I am happy to leave them be.

Using any kind of 'weapon' even a kids' toy gun is just sick, to be quite frank - what kind of lesson does that teach to kids? And I wouldn't advise training a dog to 'see off' cats either, as one day your dog will see a cat on the other side of the road and get run over. Letting the dog out just as a matter of course is fine, as cats will then keep out of the way.

If you have no dog, then a jet of water is the kindest thing - a cat is a small animal and easily hurt, but a spray of water doesn't hurt, it's just throughly vile to the cat and it won't come back in a hurry. Failing that, sprinkle citrus peel on areas they cr*p in, I use Lavender prunings. Other thing is just to have tons of plants and no spare soil for them to use. But I always find it's people with the scruffiest most overgrown gardens and no cleared pooping area that have the cats that use yours as a toilet.

Jus jokin people don't worry the cats near me are safe, maybe just a normal fence would do the job, a big one.

tried, tried chives amougst plants cats hate that too, tried air gun (that fires air not bullets) tried water pistol, tired one of those high pitched thingys, i think cat owners are not bothered about where they do it as long as its not in the litter tray they have to clean! not to put a broad band on all cat owners, but this is an issue i feel strongley about! nuff said dont want get thread shut down.

Jillybabes, I do sympathise!! I had this problem when I moved house. I tried everything that was suggested to me. I have to say the cat repellent stuff you can buy is an absolute rip off and does not work AT ALL. Orange peel worked to some extent but then I noticed that whenever the privet hedge had been cut and bits of privet got left behind the cats stopped coming overnight. If ever I have any reoccurrance of this little problem, I just cut the hedge. Could be a coincidence of course but it seemed to work for me.

all the smellie stuff can work, we once used neat ammonia from the chemist.however the efficiency fades & u need to redistribute the stuff every time it rains.
they dont like spikey plants, holly etc but by the time they grow large enough the cat will have kippered it anyway.
don't use pea shingle - makes a nice big litter tray, some mulch puts them off "chocolate smeeling type".

if you have fencing, then there is a plastic spiked topping that you can purchase which just screws on. It is a deterrent to cats as it would be very uncomfortable for them to walk on, but it does not harm them
