View Full Version : The Stonehouse is closing
Sad but true:
The Stonehouse will be closing shortly and will not be re-opening as a pub. As far as I know it is being sold to be turned into a shop or shops.
Having had a limited experience soem years ago of The Stonehouse I can't say it will be missed.... :)
However, we'll probably end up with a Subway, a Carphone Warehouse and a boutique shop selling Mongolian Noseflutes.

Any of the above would be preferable to a sh*thouse the calibre of that festering pit!

Joe Or a Chinese medecine store with a big buddah on the door front ;) ;)
DaBouncer 08-06-2005, 09:25 In my younger clubbing days I used to really enjoy the Stonehouse. Not been in the place on a night time for some years now tho... not since the DJ Mr B I think he called himself left.
Ah... good times!
I have reasonable but rather old memories of the "Stonehouse".Does anyone remember the courtyard with the night sky effect??
 yay, finally get rid of all the decredip animals that go there,

Nah, they'll just move down the road to Cavell's.:D
more than likely they will, with blasting niche music, theyll probably open something up like dikkins again :(

They'd better make sure they have enough tyreswings and fresh bananas, or else there will be trouble!
StarSparkle 08-06-2005, 11:01 A few years ago my sister and me had arranged to meet some of my sister's uni department colleagues in the Stonehouse one Friday night, before going on to the cinema. Neither of us had ever been in there before.
We walked in, and then kept on walking until we'd reached the other side of the pub, and then walked straight out the door on that side! Somewhere along the way we collected my sister's colleagues! Sounds silly, but it's true!
Needless to say, I won't miss the Stonehouse! :D
StarSparkle :)
i like it! ive done that a many occasions,,,
To be fair they have made an effort recently, and it is noticeable since the music policy changed most of the chavs have gone and the crowd has been older and nicer.
The beer is still awful though.
I will be sad to lose it as a pub, in my view it is always bad news when we lose a pub to development - I would prefer a bad pub turned into a good pub rather than anything else.
Can I ask the source of this information?
spyro2000 08-06-2005, 11:21 Terrible, Havent been in there for a long time, but from what I remember it was a decent place to go. :(

Hey! That was my favorite watering hole 40 years ago.
I'd be happy but when you think about it the Stonehouse crowd will have to take their business somewhere else.
thats the harsh reality of it! in fact maybe its a good idea to leave it open....

.... at least that way you know where to avoid....
StarSparkle :D
When I first started going out I used to visit The Stonehouse almost everytime I went out.
I last went in the place about 3 years ago and it was awful. Not a patch on what it used to be. In fact it was dead and the place looked a tip.
I'm not surprised at all that it's closing because it's been left behind.

Used to work there back in '84/85.
It used to be a really cool place (especially the "Courtyard" when the lasers were turned on;)) though I've only been in once since they ripped it apart when Orchard Square was being developed!
The Stonehouse was one of the first pubs that i ever went to.The pub crawl always consisted of Stonehouse.Fountain bar,Legends,Priory (forget the old name)then on to Cairo's followed by a Chips, cheese & onion at a burger van that was situated next to the catherdral, and they at least are still going at the top end of fargate on a Friday night.
Great memories.
Am i right in thinking that the bar in the Stonehouse was once the longest in Britain?

It was the longest in Europe, not just Britain, but not when I was there (much better)!

Every cloud has a silver lining, you cant find a Mongolian noseflute for love nor money here in Lincolnshire.
From some of he comments i'm glad i missed the latter years of the Stonehouse, I like many it seems, have fond memories of the old courtyard, i miss the novelty type pub, there was one like the interior of a galleon up near rare and racey records [cant be more specific with the location] any one remember that? too many pubs look the same now.

Remember it well - bought my first pint in there in March 1970 (aged 15 ) - double diamond, 1s 10d.
Usually a favourite meeting place in town for do's from work in the mid 70's.
The cobbles were a menace in the days of platform soles!
Paul2412 09-06-2005, 18:16 At long last it seems that sheffield are getting rid of all the bars that makes it feel like a tacky northern town... berlins, dikkins come to mind... now stonehouse! i dont think there is many more left now! problem is everywhere else costs £2.60 at least for a drink!
Robbie Loving 09-06-2005, 18:25 thqank god this dive is eventually shutting
Let's hope it becomes one of those Nail Bars. The oriental ladies seem extremely sensuous -wonder if they could sort my feet out.
Peering through the window of the one on Ecclesall Rd it seems to be mostly finger nails - no harm in asking is there ..oh and wonder if they speak English behind those veils.
fozzywozzy 09-06-2005, 22:27 The stonehouse is a real dive its where all the idiots that go to niche go before they go to that sh** hole and I for one will not be sad to see it go!
Whatever you may think of it now, it wasn't always thus:

Hi treeko
as a matter of fact we have just been discussing the courtyard with all the little lights to give the effects of stars, and the cobbles stones on the floor. i remember it as we used to go in there in the early 80's on our way to the night club. it was always packed and people were forced in the courtyard as we were shoved round.

sheffieldism 02-05-2006, 08:05 sounds like good news, sheffield are now starting to filter out the crap so we can have a good nightlife, no loss at all in loosing the sh*thouse.

You gonna play him common people :suspect:
garryplan 17-10-2006, 17:48 for my sins I actually worked in the Stonehouse in the seventies and eighties many punters will remember me from then
fox20thc 17-10-2006, 17:53 I was working there on the day of the Hillsborough disaster.
We didnt have a clue what was happening but were forced to shut the pub up as some numpty predicted a riot in the city centre.
I worked at the Stonehouse for years when Vic & Muriel had it, a great pub then, no aggro & no low life's.
I have lots of happy memories of the place.
We had many after-hours party's in the courtyard.
I always remember customers looking up for ages trying to figure out if the sky in the courtyard was real or not.
When it changed because of the Orchard Square developement, the original Stonehouse died & it should have been given a different name.
garryplan 19-10-2006, 08:50 working for Vic and Muriel is one of my best memories of
SpeedwayDan 19-10-2006, 09:30 ****ING RACIST *******....... i hope i never find out ur true identity cos u will get pulped
i hope it wasn't a racist comment, i read it as though carmine meant the apes who want to fight all the time, i could be wrong though.
i've only been in the stonehouse once, needless to say there was a fight that carried on out into the street
tigerlily 19-10-2006, 11:59 I also remember a pub that was like a galleon inside ...The Buccaneer on leopold street, under the grand hotel.
Does anyone else remember it, I was a student at the time so it must have been early 70's?
garryplan 11-02-2007, 12:00 Garry is my name what is yours and do you rememeber me
EternalDave 12-02-2007, 02:21 I have reasonable but rather old memories of the "Stonehouse".Does anyone remember the courtyard with the night sky effect??
Aye, lasers, false shop fronts, cobblestone floor, and mullets.
Moonbird 12-02-2007, 08:10 Aye, lasers, false shop fronts, cobblestone floor, and mullets.
I remember it like that as well i loved it, but i can't have been in it for 20 years so no idea what it was like in the end!
fox20thc 12-02-2007, 08:26 I just wish somebody would do something with it, it looks so empty and abandoned.
Sad but true:

What a shame - where will all the little scrubbers go now....is Berlins still open...that'd be like a home from home for them?
fox20thc 12-02-2007, 16:24 What a shame - where will all the little scrubbers go now....is Berlins still open...that'd be like a home from home for them?
lol - you've been down there too long Leg-end.. Berlins has been gone ages.
Carborundum 12-02-2007, 20:19 Ah pity about the Stonehouse - is it closed ?
westilad80 13-02-2007, 12:06 Stonehouse was class during early stages of clubbing for me, back in 1996 or so, but to be fair it was one of those pubs, you didn't mind mising out on the pub crawl.
lol - you've been down there too long Leg-end.. Berlins has been gone ages.
True, 6 years now, but i'm up every other weekend...i doubt i'd have had Berlins on my radar even if i still lived in Sheff.
What is the alternative for them then..maybe the Surrey?
