Will start off with posting this here.
I'm playing World of Warcraft (which is online) with a friend.
We both have broadband.
We'd like the ability to talk to each other (not provided in game) whilst we are playing.

How do people do it?

1. Do we get webcams?
2.Microsoft Gamevoice?
3. VOIP headsets like gossiptel or skype?

Any advice appreciated.

Two pieces of software would be suitable for that:

Skype.
&
Roger Wilco.

Both good, but Skype is lot more demanding than RW, which is why it's a gudden. I'd go for RW really, simple and doesn't need much BW or proc power.

There is a program called 'Ventrilo' which I have used in the past and found excellent.

Believe it or not the best voice chat I've used is Yahoo instant messenger. It's clear and crisp (unlike RW), supports hands free that works well - ie you don't have to hold donw a key to talk it's automatically start transmitting and stop when you speak and can host as many people as you like. It doesn't have the options of teakspeak (that's part of the point - it's simple and effective), no messing about with IP numbers, chat room passwords or any other nonesense.
Try it yourself, you wont find anything simpler to use, as effective at what it does without all the hassle I susepct.

Oooh I like that for the short term as there will only be two of us.

Lots of helpful suggestions and I will try them as well ta:)

Vent is very good. Someone off here is letting me have space on his vent server for free. I'm not playing WoW at the minute. Sick of the grind.

When did they remove the in-game voice chat? It wasn't very good but came in really handy during PuG AV's

If anyone needs any space they can use my Ventrilo Server, you can get the info at 360aim.com, which is my gaming community

Xfire is the app you want. Supports almost every game, logs how long you've been playing a game for, tells your friends what you're playing, what server you're on, has an in game instant messaging service (just press scoll lock + X whilst playing and it'll come up), also supports voice chat, has an inbuilt video/screenshot capture, plus an ingame web browser. Google it!

Any program that does all that is surely going to be resource hungry isn't it?

Just to put it in comparison

Ventrilo: 4,000k
Xfire: 15,000k
MSN: 40,000K
Firefox: 115,000K

Erm.. they haven't, its still there. For just two of you, the in game voice chat works fine. Make a custom channel for each other to join, enable voice, job done.

Rubbish in raids though, thats when stuff like Vent comes into its own.
