View Full Version : Most UNSCAREY Horror Film Ever
SassyPam 07-06-2005, 20:36 I just want to ask if anyone else is of the same mind as me and finds The Exorcist to be the most unscarey horror film ever.
The reason I am writing this is because I keep seeing opinion polls on the TV that show this to be the Number 1 most scarey film of all time. I am petrified of most horror films and won't watch them, in fact if a trailer says that a film is an 18 I won't go to the pictues to watch it.
So can someone explain to me why this film, The Exorcist, keeps being labeled as the most scarey film ever?
watch the recent prequel or any US remake of an asian horror and then comment.
The Exorcist was very scary when it came out 9ambulances outside of cinemas etc0). It has obviously aged but still a good film.
the 1st version of amytyville horror
The original version of "The Thing", watched it on BBC 2 last night and fell asleep...the Carpenter remake is surely a film that escapes the usual stigma attached to rehashings of an old idea.
StarSparkle 08-06-2005, 11:09 The most unscary 'horror' film ever has got to be "Night of the Lepus".
A community terrorised by giant rabbits?! ok it was the 1950s, but even so..... :loopy:
I remember feeling really sorry for the poor big bunnies as they fried on the electric fence..... :suspect:

I recall a black and white film [possibly from the late 30s] called 'Kiss of Evil', shown as part of the 'Night of the Demon' season on seventies television. The unconvincing 'vampires' generally over-acted, with ill-fitting fangs, grimacing as if suffering from piles.
foo_fighter 08-06-2005, 11:52 Just about any US "horror" film...
...when will they realise that fake blood and special effects does not a scary film make.
There are of course some notable exceptions (to prove the rule?), but in general, no.
:)
Greenback 08-06-2005, 11:57 StarSparkle, the film you're talking about sounds fantastic! I love cheesy 50s horror movies. Them! is a pretty good one - giant ants in the desert - as is The Creature from the Black Lagoon. I've never seen Attack of the 50ft Woman, but I think that couldn't help but be great too.
There are a couple of excellent ones from that period though, Forbidden Planet and Invasion of the Body Snatchers in particular.
The worst horror film is Urban Legend, without a doubt.
DanSumption 08-06-2005, 12:13 Greenback & Starspakle - this is incredible! I remember one night when I was about 12 years old, Them and Night of the Lepus were on back-to-back on BBC (at least, I'm pretty sure it was those two - there was an ant film and then a rabbit film), my Dad and I sat up watching them, making sarcastic comments about every element. By the end of the evening we were almost wetting ourselves laughing. Scary? Not!

Greenback, "Night of the Lepus" is very much in the same vein as "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes"! A kitsch classic - well worth watching for a good laugh! Like "Them!" as you mention, but giant bunnies in hicksville USA rather than giant ants.
Oh, "Forbidden Planet" - now that's a genuine classic. I can watch that again and again. (Although I have to make a huge effort now not to think of Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebbin!! :D). When I watched it as a child, though, it scared the life out of me and gave me nightmares for ages.

Oops, sorry, DanSumption - I posted the above before seeing your post :(
Bizarre - I bet that back-to-back showing on the BBC was when I saw "Night of the Lepus" too! It was pretty funny, but I was quite upset at the end at the poor bunnies' fate..... Not a successful outcome for a 'horror' film! :D
For anyone who's not seen it, by the way, I apologise for rather thoughtlessly giving away the ending in my earlier posting!

"The Shinning" (Sorry, "The Shining" :D ) is a great film - I'm not really a fan of horror films, but I do 'enjoy' this one. I've seen it quite a few times now.
The only thing is - I've never found it THAT scary, mainly cos I saw "The Simpsons" version of it first, and that took the edge off all the scary bits! "No beer, no tv, make Homer go Crazeee"! :P
