I've just watched it, anyone else see it?

I believe this was the funniest [or /cringeworthy] thing this Christmas or even this year on TV.

Brilliantly written and acted.

Really?!

I thought it was the best RF so far. :):hihi:

I've not only gone out with someone whose family were like them, but also have friends that have lives that they [denise and dave] seem to aspire to be like :gag:. The directors pushed 'cringing' to it's limit with this episode. I haven't laughed so much in ages.

I've grown weary of this over the years, but I enjoyed this one. The new characters and new setting did freshen it up.

I'll give it a 7/10.

I thought the turkey in the bath was a bit lame - like, silly and unbelievable, even for them. I wasn't overly impressed. But then, I miss Liz Smith/Nana.

I thought it was good, but I didn't think Dave's dad was anything like we'd been led to believe.

In the past he'd been said to be on disability and seemed to have a limp or something, but no sign of that when we saw him.

BoroughGal
27-12-2008, 12:15
Yes, Chris, I thought that? He was quite old and kindly, not the "sponger" (their words, not mine) that we'd been led to believe he was.

I thought it was a great episode - really funny, slightly contrived, but good "turn your brain off" telly.

I also agree that Tom Courtenay didn't quite fit as Dave's dad but it was still a lovely performance from him, as usual. It was marvelous to see him teamed up with Helen Fraser again, 45 years after Billy Liar!

I didn't realise that?!

I presume it was a deliberate bit of casting. In Billy Liar they're an engaged couple so it's good to see that she finally got her man!

I loved it.

Spoilers - From the cup a soup with a twist... in a bowl, the eating of Baby David's selection box. Christmas isn't really for kids is it... and the 'mingling 'and the exotic cocktails made of WKD and lump of stork. Definitely the funniest thing i've seen in ages.

When Denise was crying because Dave wasn't helping..

"Trust you to get a Turkey with only 2 legs" :hihi:

I know what Boroughgal means about the whole Turkey thing. It did seem different to the usual RF. But a great addition I thought.

I think the point is that Jim moans about everyone and then they turn out to be alright, it's been like that the whole way through the Royle Family.

Dave Snr was just brilliant though, the way he kept going "Barbera" at Barb was hilarious. And you could see exactly why Dave is so soft. Dave looked funny as well in his outfit with that little black hat on.

They get every detail perfect on that show - from the old paper in Jim's dining room still not scraped off to the way Denise has pink fluffy fairy lights everywhere.

I knew Id seen them together somewhere, but forgot Helen Fraser had been in Billy Liar with him. Brilliant casting, and as someone else mentoned, when he kept saying Barbera in said of Barbara was hilarious.!

I thought it was ok, but as it was missing many of the original major characters (Anthony, his mate who now plays Kirk in Corrie, the big girl from next door, her parents, and of course Nanna) was a bit too much for them to carry.

I really enjoyed seeing Tom Courtenay though, a great addition.

I thought it wouldn't be the same without Nanna but it was excellent.Jim's a**e at the end finished it off...:gag:

My favourite scene was Dave kicking the turkey on the floor:

"Don't dribble it, Dave; boot it!"

I thought Ricky Tomlinson was guilty of gross over-acting, though.

Bits of it were very good, but Gavin & Stacey was better, imo.

(natjack, Gavin & Stacey was great )

Found it cringeworthy...I thought the script was a little narrow and it had lost some of its sparkle.

Absolutely Mat. I ended up watching it twice, as my brother wanted to watch it last night. I spotted so many little details the second time, when I already knew the lines etc already. It's most certainly written and directed by perfectionists. You can see it in both Cash and Aherne. For me they always stand out for playing the perfect role.

Tom Courtenay was good but he wasn't playing Dave's dad as he had been described in the past.

It was a shame too that Antony and Cheryl at least weren't in it.

No one has said the actors turned down the offier to be in the show, so were they not asked?

my favourite bit was Twiggy talking about prison as if it was like a holiday "18 months is too long, don't you think, where as 6 months is not enough... 12 months is just right!" and he said that normally he sees his kid every other month (or something) but inside it was all the time!

I thought it was hillarious, especially the Twiggy bit 2437_SNT mentioned! Have to admit though, the reclining part was a bit tedious.

Favourite bit was the turkey though :hihi:

Yeh, The Royle Family prided itself on subtle humour, but I thought the Special was a bit too over the top. I suppose it was like a grand finale or something, but even so... it lost that subtlety.

It was good though. I only laughed through the nose. No guffawing.

Did anyone notice that Denise didn't eat anything at all, not even any carrot crush!

I thought it was the best thing on all Christmas, loved the nana bauble on the tree's and jim saying "I'm just off to do a yule tide log" Classic!

Missed Anthony though and Darren and Cheryl.

Ralf Little (Antony) hasn't done much since the last series of Two Pints has he? Anyone know if that's coming back next year at all? I know they "killed off" Jonny so Ralf can't be in it any more, shame... He was SO chav-tastically funny the workshy git, he had the opportunity to do his DREAM job, working in a Biscuit factory in Stockport, and messed up the interview! :loopy:

I thought it was brilliant. Especially when you consider they couldn't get all the regulars back together and had to introduce new people who IMO were excellent. Not only that, to take the programme out of it's `comfort zone` i.e. the normal living room setting, and use somewhere different in Denise and Davids house, was a masterstroke.
One small crisicism. Towards the end every time they showed Jim sitting in the chair the amount of drink in his glass kept going up and down in the same scene. They must have filmed them out of sequence. ( One for Points of View this! )

We loved it and if they ever need any new material they just need to go and spend a couple of days with my OH's family who I think the Royal family must have been based on. Funny how we love to watch the royal family but my OH's family drive me absolutely crackers.
Weird eh :)
xx
P.S. My OH agrees totally he:he
