We have 3 older staffies in the care of Rain Rescue - all that have been with us for ages - none that have had any interest in anyone wanting them. With older dogs like this - we do all the health checks for them, have them totally vet checked and everything sorted that needs sorting - and don't ask for any donation - just a life long home and commitment.
They are Betty - thats in a foster home and thats putting weight on every day. Loves home comforts and gets on with other dogs.
Jake - still very thin in a foster home - he weighs 50% of his body weight he has been so starved - around 8 years old and living with cats and other dogs.
Reggie - who although he must be about 7 or 8 is full of energy and is BORED TO DEATH in kennels with nobody to give him any cuddles or exercise.
We have sometimes managed to rehome older staffies - but usually the laid back calm ones - Betty and Reggie will never be old they are just full of energy now that they are in lovely homes.
I just wondered if anyone ever knew anyone that adopted an older staffy (apart from Spottie) which would give me some hope to keep telling these - their home may come around this year?
That's a pity to hear. I have a Stafford that's about 11 years old now. She's showing no signs of slowing down at all. Still slobbers all over anyone who even looks in her direction
I don't think 8 years old is old for a staffy.

Speaking as someone who has taken on an older Staffie i would recommend it to anyone.
Dodger was a nightmare in kennels as Rain will vouch for but from the moment he walked in here it was like he though yeah im home and we didnt have any real problems apart from the usual like he didnt like a crate for the first 2 nights. Now he doesnt have a crate whenever it goes up for a foster guess who is the first one in it and i will give you a clue it isnt the foster. In fact dodger settled so well he never left so i failed on the fostering front the first time.
I cannot sing the praises of older staffs enough, they give you so much back and i will no doubt at some point in the future have an oldie again.
ahhhhhhhh brill ending for dodger!!!!

Thanks so much for the offer Hunni - but sadly no - he's a nightmare with other dogs.
He will be one of those grumpy old men - who will have to live alone with either a single person who's ok with that - a couple where they are happy to walk his little legs off till he's too tired to go for anything - or where they are very staffy savvy and can ensure that he is totally under control.
My hope is that we will be able to find someone - who's had an older fit staffy before - and who doesn't have a cat or a dog - or visiting tiny grand children - who wants a dog for the exercise and the company. Surely Reggi'es christmas can't be too far away.
I'll keep hoping, and if something comes up that may fit in with you - I will ask again - thanks

we took a old staffie from a trust to help them out,he has turned out to be an absolute star.he has put weight on,walks longer now and has calmed down my two younger dogs.never had a problem with him in fact they can eat out of the same bowl at meal times with no bother its as though he has always been part of our family.and we have decided that when his time comes and he goes and plays in the big field all day ,we will be getting another old staffie for there last years.and i would just like to say thank you to buster (eric) for the things he gets up to for an old dog that keeps us amused most days.and well done to rains for giving them a chance
I can hand on heart say that when we are next looking for a dog an older Staffy would be our number one choice.
If we could have another now both of us would honestly bite your hand off for the opportunity to give one of these guys the home they need & deserve.

bless you Sooz
lets hope someone who is looking for one is out there soon - poor Reggie is very lonely
Well i am a huge fan of older dogs having a 10 and 16yr old here with us. We only adopted our oldest dog Tilly at the grand age of 14yrs from thornberry. I just couldn't leave her knowing noone would want her - i tell you what the best thing we ever did. She is a little wonder and she feels me with joy every single day.
I would love an staffy they are beautiful and i will always have older dogs now.
My husband and I (and our two 12 year old cats) have had Betty for a month now, and she is definitely one of those dogs you wonder why and how they ever ended up in rescue, and why no one has adopted them yet. We took her with us to the holiday family gatherings, and everyone commented on what a lovely temperment she's got.
She is 10+ years old, but she's not at all arthritic, or "elderly; she still likes a short game of chase, and a little tug-o-war now and then. Mostly what she wants, though, is a lot of snuggling. If you're after a loving, low-medium energy, mellow dog that won't jump all over you, but *will* try to wedge herself against you every time you sit down, Betty is the perfect pooch!
