View Full Version : Do you think the Armed Forces should pay Taxes?
Cherry_Pop 07-06-2005, 20:23 Why should the Armed Forces pay tax on their wages, when it basically goes back to pay their wages on defence. A ship can be out of the country for up to 10 months and a soldier can spend up to 3 years out of the UK and still pay taxes?
Tom Jones (and other famous people) can spend 6 months out of the country and be a tax exile when he earns millions. How can this be justified?
matsalleh 07-06-2005, 20:28 Go for it Cherry Pop, and get it backdated about 45 years.
They are British Citizens and where will it all end,Civil Servants,Prescott,INLAND REVENUE all working to pay their own wages.
Cherry_Pop 07-06-2005, 20:33 Yes, but matsalleh.... Do these people actually put their lives on the line for their country or just send the forces out to do it?
Kristian 07-06-2005, 20:33 Great Idea.
No taxes for armed forces. Or NHS nurses and doctors, teachers, MPs, civil servants, police officers, firemen; where do you want to end this? They all pay tax to fund their own salaries (in part).
I don't think anyone who has permanent residency here should be tax exempt.

No; they get paid for putting their life on the line.
I work in an office, but I don't complain about papercuts or RSI because I know that's a risk in my profession. Admittedly, the risks are higher in the armed forces, but they know the risks before signing up.
they also pay for their food and accomodation and most buy their own kit as the stuff supplied by the ministry of defence is second rate rubbish

Fair enough, but I buy my own work clothes too! I bet mine cost a lot more too.
Cherry_Pop 07-06-2005, 20:44 Yes but, when you live on a ship you don't have to put your bin out once a week, they have their own firemen, their own medics, their own regulators (police) and their own tutors to teach them how to fight a war plus English and Maths ect.
Nuff said....

Exactly my point CP.
I have to put my bin out, and I don't have access to my own medic, police force or personal tutor - they should pay a lot more tax than me!!!
Cherry_Pop 07-06-2005, 20:52 Exactley my point also Kristian.... These people are paying taxes as well, being part of the forces. So they don't need any civillian intervention. They are a "closed shop" so to speak.

Albeit funded from everyones tax bill. So if nobody on these ships pays towards the upkeep of them, everyone else pays more! No thank you...

My remark about backdating was to try and get 15yrs tax back.I (and others of course) actually made a profit for the country on odd occasions

Hmm, so how about the armed forces declare independence from the UK and then they can sort out the tax situation themselves.

yes they should pay taxes on their earnings but when out of the country i think they should be exempt from council tax which they still pay.

But they still have use of the fire brigade if their house burns down while they're out of the country, or the police if their home is robbed?
LordSnooty 07-06-2005, 21:42 No, of course not. Their lives are rubbish enough as it is....

Nobody forces them though Snooty; that's like saying 'I wouldn't fancy being a teacher, that must be dreadful, you shouldn't pay tax' Incidentally, if someone said that about a career I was passionate about, I'd be insulted.
LordSnooty 07-06-2005, 21:57 Not sure how anyone can be 'passionate' about waging war...

Well it wouldn't be my choice of career, think what would happen if I broke a nail! ;)
spyro2000 07-06-2005, 22:15 Yes of course they should pay tax. They have have access to government provided entities like the rest of us. I cant see why they should be exempt. especially as Kristian said ( I think it was Kristian anyway, cant be bothered to double check lol), that in the end it would be us suckers that have to pay more tax to cover the shortfall.
Whats the point in joining a profession if you dont like the rules and risks. Im personally looking to be a secondary school Teacher and I know its not the highest of paid jobs, but i know this and I wont be joining in on any strikes for higher pay demands when it comes down to it, as I should know what the pay structure is when I apply (but thats another thread altogether)

True, true. But then, if steam rollers were meant to procreate, God would have given them testicles. Just a thought.....

And a pretty obscure one at that. Keep 'em coming! (damn French keyboards, this has just taken me about three-quarters of an hour to type, replacing all the "q"s for "a"s and ","s for "m"s)
Draggletail 08-06-2005, 22:56 Quite simply, Yes, I think they should pay taxes.
