View Full Version : 10 Best Things about Sheffield
Geordiecarl 07-06-2005, 16:33 I have just spent the weekend in sheffield for the first time in 2 years with my old flatmates and we spent the weekend checking out old haunts and our ghetto! I decided to compile a list of things i miss to kill the last half an hour of a long day at work:
1. The Leadmill - its cheap cheesy and gets all the best bands on, no where like it!
2. Ponds Forge - BIG swimming pool and fun swimming pool in one place spend days sneaking from one to another!
3. Broomhill Friery - Yummy chippie, miles away from where i lived but worth the trip!
4. Pepe's Takeaway - The only place to end the night, although possible to spend an entire night there (and it has been done) as it sells alcohol and its always good crack in there from old and young!
5. The Royal Standard - My old local pub, its been done out now and lost its carachter but hopefully still full of a good crowd and good quizzes!
6. Supertram - Like a train but on road too, magic although it never takes you where you want it manages to get you AWAY from meadowhell!
7. Ski Village - The best place to break a leg, like nowhere else ive been, the val d'saire of yorkshire
8. Bakewell - OK its not sheffield but its so close you got to go and waste a sunny sunday there by the river
9. Sola - Nice little bar out the way from all the bang bang of the city centre, and do nice food too
10. Devonshire Quarter - Nice field to chill in, good shops, Forum Cafe, the only part of sheffield you need!

Swan_Vesta 09-06-2005, 13:17 1, All the advantages of city living and easy access to marvellous countryside
2, The fact that Sheffield actually has character unlike places like Milton Keynes, Slough and Romford
3, Its people, who will actually go out of their way to help you rather than considering you mentally ill for asking a stranger directions.
4, The Devonshire Cat, who serve pints of the glorious Waterloo Sunset
5, An abundance of parkland
6, All of the quirky second hand shops dotted about the city which are as eccentric as their owners
7, Trattoria Romana on Ecclesall rd
8, The Moor, or as I call it the Netto Ghetto. It's filthy, grubby but I love it!
9, It's got everything within a few square miles, I've gone months without actually leaving the city itself!
10, It's generally just a damned fine place to live
1) Sheffield Wednesday
2) The Cremorne pub
3) Gatecrasher (in it's heyday)
4) The Student's Union
5) The hills
5) Northern Sole in Broomhill
6) Que Tal on West Street
7 The Noolde Bar on London Road
8) Millhouses Park
9) Meadowhall
10) Memories!
Jade, haven't you just changed your top ten? And to go from the friery to Northern Sole is just wrong.
oops. no, you haven't.
but the friery beats Northern Sole hands down!!!
Fish and chips TEN times please!
Nope, I'm afriad I've always been in the Northern Sole camp. I know it's got a smaller fan base, but we're a much more discerning bunch of fish and chip connoisseur!
1. Sheffield wednesday
2. Record Collector at Broomhill
3. Roses Bread
4. The fat Cat
5. Access to the Peak District
6. Memorial hall for gigs (hope refurb doesn't ruin it)

My top five would be:

3 - city status but village attitude
4 - resources such as Centertainment, Meadowhell, reasonable city centre shopping, 24 hour services etc
5 - the green areas in extreme weather conditions such as high summer or deepest winter - gorgeous!
No need to add another 5 because I've covered all the ones which really matter to me.
My 10 best would be:
-Ridges Bakery on Fulwood Rd.
-Student digs in areas of the city that don't require UN peacekeepers.
-Matlock Bath on a Sunday.
-Proximity to Monsal Head (love it there...).
-Endcliffe park on sunny days.
-Tree lined roads.
-The Forum in all its guises.
-Nice restaurants that cost merely an arm.
-The Lescar
-The last half hour before closing at the Leadmill...
They're principally the things I miss living away from Sheffield.
blademan 09-06-2005, 21:35 Here's my attempt after surveying some answers already given.
1. The friendly, polite (and not yobbish) people and the different accents you can encounter on a daily basis.
2. Henderson's relish - The best kept secret since the enigma.
3. The dopey tram conductors who fail to notice you get on even if you walk straight past them.
4. The respectul rivalry between Wedneaday and United fans (although there is plenty of hatred, each team's supporters wishes the others luck in big matches etc)
5. The good cycling routes. There is guaranteed to be a challenging hill within 10 minutes bike ride of your front door.
6. Parks on sunny days.
7. Parks on snowy days, hours of sledge-tastic fun!
8. (Stealing one from Zebra but it's so great, it just sums Sheffield up in a sentence) - "City status but village attitude"
9. All the social facilities you need within a few minutes of each other (Town/Centretainment-Meadowhall)
10. Everything you ever need, you don't ever have to leave!

sheff_minx 10-06-2005, 20:03 I've only been here since September, and I am being inspired by the lists of others, but here's my attempt at explaining to my mother why I am choosing to stay here over summer rather than returning to "the warmth of her bosom"!!!
1. The people are generally friendly and helpful
