Help - anyone know a good pub in the Peak District where several of us could camp for the weekend - the one we normally go to (The Grouse and Claret in Rowsley) is full, and I can't think of any similar places.
There must be other good pubs with a site for tents - any advice greatly appreciated as always.

I once stayed at a site that was owned by a pub in Alstonefield. Can't remember the name but I remember it had showers etc. Also, the site was surrounded by a high dry stone wall so was sheltered from the weather

Can't for the life of me remember what the pub is called, but go to Hope, and there's a pub right on the T-junction (main road). There's a farm behind it which has a decent campsite... pretty cheap, and within nice stumbling distance from the pub!

Bit nebulous but there is a pub by a river/bridge just outside Hathersage on the (grindleford????) road - (the plough????)
I think there may be a campsite at the side of the pub.......

At Edale there's a campsite called Coopers... has a cafe on-site which does a mean all day breakfast (well it did when I worked there the last 2 summers!!!)... pub across the road called The Nags Head and one down the lane called the Ramblers.

That pub is called The George, nice little pub although I think Alstonefield is in Staffs? I may be mistaken although it may well still be in the peak district. Its not to far from Hartington

Alstonefield is indeed in Staffordshuire, but it is also in the Peak District - which is where clogginchris enquired about.

I was thinking of the same one, it's beside the river, just before you go under the train-bridge.

I stayed here a few years ago, really great for camping, the pub was quite clique with the climbers, but you don't notice so much after the first few pints ;)

I'd check before going though as it was a few years ago when I was there, make sure they still do camping :)

Theres also some good shops in Hathersage, including the Outdoor Shop, and you can visit the local graveyard where Little John is buried!

Fieldhead Campsite in Edale is pretty good. Lots of small fields, one right by the river.

The only problem is limited car parking and it can get very busy, with some fields closed off for scouts or army cadets on occasion.

Do you mean the cider house, the Traverlers Rest?

From:

http://www.wishful-thinking.org.uk/genuki/DBY/Hathersage/StMichael2.html

Excavation of the burial site in 1784 revealed a thirteen and a half feet long grave, and a thigh bone almost 30 inches long, giving an estimated height of about eight feet. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, its whereabouts, and of the cap and bow, are now unknown...

Yes, I think I stayed in one on my Duke of Edinburgh award thing, I remember we went to the pub and had chips! (don't think there were any showers or anything though!!)

More recently I stayed in Edale (in a farmers field though not the campsite).. there are two pubs in the village a short walk from each other and there are a couple of campsites too!! Have fun!

The Quiet Woman
Earl Sterndale
near Buxton
Pool room, Marston's Pedigree worth killing for!

The Royal Oak
Sparklow (west of Monyash)
Derbyshire.
Good beer & food. Pool

I tried these the other year and had a great time. They are cheap and basic but the Quiet Woman is like the Green Man pub in the Wicker Man film and has "relaxed" drinking hours. The Royal Oak has a nice room under the pub for pool playing and good food.

The Barrel Inn on Eyam Moor is great - but a beggar to find, so get an OS map and strong legs or a car - and it has a youth hostel right at the side of it, which I presume will have an area for camping?

Yep, that's the one at Bretton. Outstanding views across six or seven counties and popular with gliders.

You're not kidding - we called one sunday lunchtime - it was like the league of gentlemen in there - the whole room stopped and looked at us - we decided not to stop for one .... I do heresay that people go missing around them parts and end up in the stew pot...

The site at Hathersage is the Plough, its a nice site.. fully recommended...and good beer too...
