Withnail and I is a brilliant film, I think it's one of my favourites. I have just bought the DVD so I could watch it again.

A friend has told me it's a big cult film but I don't know anyone else who has seen it so maybe she's just mad? A google search brings up lots of fanboy websites but I think thats true for most films, isn't it!

Withnail does have a very big underground following and you'd be shocked to find out how many people actually haven't seen or heard of it.

The memory of the Camberwell Carrot lives on
I invented it in Camberwell, and it looks like a carrot

There are many quotable lines from the grim pub at the start of the film, but they're too rude for the delicate ears of the forum population!:D

I have known of it for a very long time and watched it a couple of years ago.

It is a great film. The showroom should pop it on.

Withnail & I is truly a cult film, anarchic, hilarious and squirmingly awkward in places watching Monty. I may well watch it tonight.

Ah I'm pleased to see its not just me! Most of my mates are a bit bemused when I run at them shouting FORK IT!

Theres been a number of occasions when I've got some strange looks by saying "Imagine the size of his balls...", or whittering on about how hair are your ariels...

Up there with the all-time greats. My ex never liked it though - she said it was too "laddy".

I'm sure this is a film I should like, all my mates with the same taste in films as me have recommended it to me, but I tried and just couldn't get on with it!

I must try again soon.

If it's not your cup of tea you should't flog yourself to appreciate the film...it's not a crime to fail to be fond it!

Absolutely! But it may have been that I just wasn't in the mood the first time.... or that it'd been hyped too much for me. I shan't flog myself (no matter HOW much I love to do so...), but I may just give one more intzie weenie little try. :P

I do kinda think that its a good indicator if the people that like the same things as you reccommend them to you. And I've been wrong before!

I think you have to watch it without many expectations, BoroughGal. Its a strange film in that it doesn't have much of a plot line - they go to the pub, they go to montys, they go to the countryside, they go back to the pub, they go to a tea room, they go home. Its the dialogue and the general aura of the film that make it so funny and memorable.

I have tried the drinking game, panda. Leaving out the lighter fluid, I didn't get very far. In the pub they drink a stupid amount - two large gins, two pints, two large gins, two pints, it just gets silly. Gin makes me emotional, anyway.

This is a tremendous film, obviously a classic.
Apparenly, R.E.Grand did the whole thing sober! What great acting

Another one in a similar vein is called Mr Jolly Lives next door by the comic strip. This is my favourite film of all time also involving lots of alcohol.

BoroughGal, it's really true with this film that the mood you are in dictates whether or not you like it. It's one of my favourites now, but I hated it the first time I saw it, largely because I was living in the coldest, dampest, most horrible student hovel you can imagine. That's really not a good place to watch people going on holiday by mistake to an inhospitible cottage. We were sat there shivvering. All we could think about was cold...

Next time I saw it, I was sat in nice warm house and guess what - loved it!

Not saying your house isn't very nice mind!

'Monty, you terrible c**t!'

YES! And I think this is what I did.... someone told me it was the best film ever - and I thought it was simply going nowhere -
but I remeber thinking the same of Phoenix Nights - everyone said how hiliarious it was, and I was expecting belly laughs, didn't enjoy that either - but left to my own devices to watch it properly and without any of the expectations, I grew to love it and it's a favourite comedy of mine now. So, I'm gonna try it again.

So I should get my fire on and make a nice cup of tea then? Oooh, warm fires and cups of tea in my own house is my most bestestest thing! So, who's going to copy/lend it me then?

You can borrow it off me if you like! I have already watched it twice again since buying it.

Danny is the greatest character. "Take a step back, man"...

It is true that R E Grant doesn't drink (I think he's allergic to alcohol), which is amazing since he plays a great drunk! I recently read his autobiography. Bruce Robinson (director) forced him to get drunk in preparation for the part.
