Hi all,

I know there are a few posts about this already. The last one I could find was from June this year. I am a bit portly (but working on it....trying to anyways seeing as it is Xmas!). Both sites are accessible to me and my girlfriend, but I was hoping for some general views on either for lessons.

I dabbled in a spot of bouldering at the Sheff Uni gym and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, work got in the way and I couldn't go anymore!

So this time, I am aiming to take on some lessons on wall climbing as appossed to just bouldering. Does anyone have any experience of each clubs beginner courses? Are they spacious, over subscribed? Any hidden costs etc etc.

Thanks in advance folks :)

I did the beginners course at the edge about 4 years ago. I think you have to book 3 sessions for about £15 each, which includes harness hire. I'd recommend it!

Come on guys! someone must have an opinion which is better? Edge or Foundry? Is one better than the other for lone climbers wanting to join in? Whose club is more friendly?

I'm going to be joining a beginner's course early in the new year, just dont know which. And I'm not sure you can always tell by looking through the window.

Most people will have only done lessons at one venue.
I learnt at the Edge, but I climb now at the Foundry... Seemed like reasonable value at the edge.

If you know anyone who climbs just get them to teach you, there's no official requirement to be taught by the venue.

Yeah I read that on their site, not a bad idea, I'm a bit short on climbing friends though.

What made you decide to move to the Foundry from The Edge? Is one place more suited to novices, or less cliquey than the other?

Cheers!

It's location to be honest, it's slightly easier for me to get to the foundry as I'm already on that side of town, plus whilst I've been working in the city centre I could walk down after work on a Friday night.

If any of you guys are looking for someone to climb with then drop me a line. I am looking for a regular climbing buddy. I am at the novice/intermediate level.

Cheers

Nice one Rob, thanks for that.

As soon as I'm done decorating, I'll be getting on the intro course and getting stuck in. After that, I was considering looking at the climbing club. I'll drop you a line when I'm through the beginner's course. Cheers.

Anyone else interested in joining up?!

What sort of price are climbing lessons?

I'd definitely start at the Edge. To get started, you will need three or four introductory lessons, which cost £16.50 per session. You can then become a member of the climbing club, which costs £20.00 a year. The club meets on Wednesdays. On club nights, you get extra training for free, and you get a chance to meet other climbers. And in the summer months, the club has outdoor sessions where you go climb in the Peak district. You can go to outdoor sessions even if you have only been climbing for a few weeks - they make sure there are climbs at different levels.

I did the introductory lessons at the Foundry and have since climbed regularly at both and would recommend the Foundry. It is much more spacious for beginners and the staff are lovely
