View Full Version : Why is my BB speed faster on wi-fi

Sorry for another BB speed thread . . . I suggest wrapping a towel around you head and then when it hits the wall it won't hurt so much.

I posted a couple of weeks ago about Orange BB and wondered why it was so slow. I've just done another speedtest from the other BB thread and I was getting 600 kbs dl speed which is terrible.

However, I've brought my lappy up and done the same test - nearly 7000 kbs - over 10 times faster.

So I'm assuming the prob is my desktop, not my BB provider?

Any ideas what's happening? (Over the last few weeks I've run malewarbytes, AVG, CCleaner). Nothing is showing. Can a computer just . . . die?

They can just die, but I don't think that's what's happening here. If you've run all the antivirus stuff and nothing's been picked up it could be downloading windows updates? Other than that, are there any other programs on there that could be downloading (iplayer, bittorrent clients, limewire, that kind of thing)? All of those programs can be set to start when the PC does and as such might be connecting and using the bandwidth before you get to the speed test.

Hope that helps,

Your network card drivers perhaps, or the network card itself might be on the way out.

If the network is onboard, then it might be worth disabling it in bios and trying a separate PCI card.

Download Hijackthis (http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html), do a scan, and post the log file on here. ;)

Thanks . . .

DL Hijack now on the desktop but it's coming down a 4.8 k/sec, so is going to take 10 mins.

Thanks. I do use bittorrent etc but I always delete the torrent after DL and don't seed. Also, if they were using bandwidth I'm assuming it would also slow the laptop down.

I've just installed service pack 3 for XP aswell.

Do you use any TV catch-up type programs? I believe some of them also serve from your PC.

You could try Ctr Alt Del & go to networking to see if it shows you uploading/downloading anything when you shouldn't be.

Another option is to check your usage from your ISP site, then check back a few hours later to see if it has changed (obviously don't use the internet in between checking, just leave the PC turned on). If it goes up you may have a rootkit or other malware on your PC.

I don't use iplayer or anything, not on my pc. I've checked networking and it's showing nothing.

I tried 'hyjackthis' and four servers needed updating, but none that would seem to have a hugely detrimental effect on performance.

Virus and maleware scan are bringing up nothing. I've even tried system restore, but for some reason the restore point only goes back a couple of weeks.
