I have two hard discs on my pc.
One a 90GB, has two partitions one of which is used for programs and the other for storing files.
The second HD is used for back up only.
I can't remember where I got this from:

http://internetbestsecrets.com/2008/09/optimizing-xp-for-dual-hdssd-part-i.html

but if it was from this forum ...many thanks.

I found that opening photo files from the back up disc (using my photo program) was instantaneous whilst the same file from the partitioned disc took seconds.

This might be common knowledge and obvious BUT not to me!!!

Its because your main 90GB disk is being used by your operating system, swap files, running programs and such. When you access your back up disk, no other applications or processes are running, so the transfer time is faster

Hope this helps
