View Full Version : Speeding on Penistone Road
Hi there,
Just wanted to tap into the wisdom of the forum members.
My friend got caught by a camera doing 47 in a 30 zone. What do you think the damage will be? £60 and 3 points or more?
Thanks for the help

Should help. You're looking at £45 - £100 penalty with £30 costs, and 4 points. However, given that the 'guidelines' for summons is 50mph it could lead to that.
I assume your friend has received a 'notice of intended prosecution' (NIP). This is a legal requirement when specified offences, usually motoring, are committed and the offender would otherwise be unaware of the impending legal action. The most likely outcome, unless there are aggravating factors such as involvement in an accident, are that a fixed penalty notice will be issued. This would be £60 fine and 3 penalty points.
The graduated scheme refered to in the previous post is among government proposals and not currently in force in South Yorkshire.
Could anybody tell me exactly where the speed camera is on Penistone Road? I've been looking but haven't managed to track it down yet.
Its on the way into town just outside the old Crusteel plan (halfway between Hillfoot Bridge and the Wickes DIY place).
Its on the side heading into town, next to that big shabby building who name has escaped me. About 1/2 mile before the hill up to the Uni.
neeeeeeeeeek 07-06-2005, 08:42 As mentioned it's quite close to town, near Wickes. The road should not be a 30 zone but this has been done before so don't mention it else you will have the, 'anti-driving-over-10-miles-an-hour-cos-speed-kills' brigade on your back!

Of course it should be 30mph neeeek. Its three lanes wide at that point - 4 lanes 50 yards further down the road. Imagine the untold damage you would to those pedestrians coming out of the closed down factories, or those "stray ladies" who have lost their way down from Netherthorpe Road. Pretty obvious why its 30. Who mentioned anything about ideal site to grab more revenue for the safety partnership/government partnership
neeeeeeeeeek 07-06-2005, 11:01 Sorry MobileB, what was I thinking.. I shall hang my head in shame.. To redeem myself I shall petition motorways to have speed bumps and a 20mph limit. Anyone caught driving at 70 should be hung, then beaten, then hung again. (Just to make sure).

Thing is, you can't really claim that; there is only 1 camera along the entire stretch that has a 30 limit, from the top of the Wedesday ground right down to the Esso garage at Netherthorpe Road. If I were placing cameras to cash in, there are some much more suitable positions than in an open bit of carriageway on one side only. Not saying where though; don't want to give any ideas away :)
Do we have to go down this 'road' again? Hasn't it been done to death on previous threads?

Yeah...but we're Yorkshire folk, and love a good moan!! :D
Personally I think you've just got to accept that the cameras are there to stay, The government used to get alot of it's taxes from Industry, export tax etc, it was alot of revenue to lose...they now get it from cigs...booze and drivers daft enough to get caught speeding, part of that tax will go towards peicing together the broken bones of the child that speeding driver may hit one day, so it's all swings & 'roundabouts'.
If you've got enough common sense to pass your driving test in the first place, then surely you must have enough common sense not to speed, especially where you know there are cameras, it's hardly rocket science! :)

You could zoom around at 50mph at night and wait for the flash, or, more sensibly, look here: http://www.abd.org.uk/cameras/south_yorkshire.htm ;)
thanks for all the replies, my friend got the letter headed "notice of intended prosecution". Guess that he will end up with a 60 pound fine and 3 points.
