What things decorative and renovation wise can you do to your council flat? Do you need permission? Can you re do the kitchens and bathrooms if you so wish to to your specifications? or is it just cosmetic decoration you are allowed to do?

If you are going to change anything (apart from cosmetics),you need permission. My mother changed her doors and kitchen years ago. When she moved out she had to pay for the council to come in and rip her oak kitchen out and replace it with a standard white one. The doors cost her £600 on top of that.

This was all about 15 years ago though so best to check.

It's basically down to the terms of your tenancy agreement. If you sign up for a property, part of the agreement is that if/when you vacate your property, you will leave the property in the same condition as when you moved in; obviously with the exception of decoration e.g. wall paper.

I would advise you to study your tenancy agreement and also speak to your local housing office for clarification.
