Has anyone used a digital camera's macro facility to copy 35mm slides? Obviously the slide would have to be backlit, but what sort of quality might one expect?

Haven't tried that but had good results with an Epson scanner. Slides and negs both work well and the backlight is nice and even.

Much, much better to use a slide scanner.
