Going to go to a main dealer for this. Its a VW golf mk3. How much should it cost, or are there any other alternatives?

Main dealers are likely to cost a fair bit. They'll only use their own suppliers and so may not have the cheapest source, nor charge the cheapest labour.

There are loads of garages dotted about who would do it. Best way it to go through the Yellow Pages and ring around. Save traipsing to each one to find out!

I can't imagine it is that difficult to change yourself? Few nuts and bults here and there? Save some money.

hmm.. according to the haynes manual it seems that bit too tricky to tackle the job myself..
