View Full Version : Petition for support of minorty sports max 20-12-2008, 13:08 There's a petition here: Petition (http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/OlympicLegacy/) which is asking for this government to support sports other than the mainstream ones. (Is skittles and shove ha'penny amongst the 'sports' in question?) daftlad 20-12-2008, 13:56 is underwater blow football on the list GordonBennet 22-12-2008, 10:01 The reason why sports are minority sports is that very few people are interested in either playing or watching them. Sport is really all about football in the winter, cricket in the summer and a couple of weeks a year for snooker, tennis, etc. All the rest is unimportant and only exists to fill up the hundreds of satellite sports TV channels. arachnophobe 22-12-2008, 12:44 Could you list these minority sports please? I couldn't find anything on the link that specifies what they are. Ousetunes 22-12-2008, 13:07 Could you list these minority sports please? I would like to know which kind of 'minority sports' this petition is for. What would you class as a minority sport? The ones that aren't on Sky? The one's that the BBC can only afford to show? Or the ones we're no good at? From what I can see this petition is for sports to be considered for the 2012, but I am I right in thinking only the IOC can make these changes and we have no real say over it? Traditionally we concentrate on sports such as Football, Cricket, Athletics and the like because these sports are embedded in our country's culture - we invented, or had a hand in inventing, most of them. Trying to get people interested in a sport such as Handball will, in my eyes, prove a bit fruitless. Nobody will want to plough money into a sport that nobody plays. max 31-12-2008, 13:50 This is the main thrust of the petition: We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to ensure adequate funding for those Olympic sports for which UK Sport has not so far confirmed details. My main sporting interest is fencing which is currently one of the Olympic sports but there have been moves in the past to reduce the number of events or remove it altogether. If we were to get a commitment to fund minority Olympic sports such as this then it would go some way to preventing the IOC from reducing its importance. daftlad 31-12-2008, 13:51 Knitting Tea Sipping Ping Pong Horse Washing Snap Top Trumps Nail Filing Crosswords Baking I will sign up for the botty burp challenge:hihi: |
