No doubt somebody will put me right but I don't remember a thouroughfare called Fowler Terrace off Pitsmoor Road, or Stanley Works being just off Pitsmoor Road at all. Stanley works were on Rutland Road surely. If there was a Fowler Terrace could it've been off Fowler Street somewhere? All streets I remember off Fowler were, from the top, Hayward Road, Grove Street, Marshall Street, and Reginald Street.

Your right Stanley works is on Rutland Rd but what I meant is Fowler was were the playing fields are now also known as Stanley works.
I was born on Fowler Street and lived on Grove Street but cant confirm if there was a terrace cause I was a baby but if it did exist surely it would have been off Fowler Street which was situated were "stanley works" playing fields are today.

Hi,
Fowler terrace is none existant now,due to the blitz, its location was a cul-de-sac about half way up FOWLER STREET (from the railway line) on the left hand side, Grove Street was across on the other side of Fowler Street, this was also bombed,And Reginald Street was just above. 2 people that lived in Fowler Terrace was killed in Marples, the same night. ! was evacuated to Wales

Wallytof, do you remember anyone who lived on Macro Street --at the big house, 78, for instance. Or anybody called Manning who lived at the bottom of Fowler Street. I'm wondering about the people who were among you neighbours when you lived there.

Hi,
I don't remember those names, but half way up fowler street was the Shaws they had a son Graham who became a foot baller, and the 2 Bladen girls who lived at the shop, and the others I have said in my past reply, there
was a william he was about my age (5) in Grove Street but I believe he was killed on that night.I do not remember everyone as I am now 73

The Shaws may well have been bombed out, for they moved to Southey Green sometime in the 1940s.
The Brian Manning I mentioned would be about 70 or 71 now, and he was pally with a lad called Betts. I also remember a Sheila Garfitt from that time, but, sadly, I was told that she died quite young.

I have just been doing some family history research and come across a family that lived in Fowler Place in 1891 (No 15). The family name is Eyre and the father is Stenton Eyre. Do you know if Fowler Place was near Fowler Terrace etc. please?

Thank you
Linda

Hi Linda,
yes Fowler place and fowler terrace was near to each other, starting from the bottom of fowler street (railway line end) as you walked up fowler street, on the right about halfway up was a shop called Bladens, across on the other side almost facing was Fowler Terrace and a few yards further uo was Fowler Place, most of this was bomed in december 1940, I lived in fowler place, and was trapped in the cellar, and had to be dug out, then i was evacuated to wales. hope this helps you in your search,

Wow - what a speedy reply.
I love to hear tales of the people who experienced the blitz and war. It makes me recall that I am lucky to live in peace time. Thank you. I'm sure my relatives who lived in Fowler Terrace were long gone by the time you were there - but its fun to see where they lived.
I also have Shaw's in my family tree. I see this name is mentioned in the thread of this post.
My Grandmother was born a Shaw (and became a Greenfield). She lived in Pickering Road, Parkwood Springs....which I'm sure doesn't look anything like it used to now. All in a similar area I think.
thanks again
Linda

I've just been thro' this thread again and rest assured the Shaws didn't get bombed out. Their house was intact until the clearances as far as I know. I base all this due to the fact we ( of the Hayward Road gang) used to play football down there in '44. He had a brother did Graham, younger brother, an obnoxious little fellow. Bladens grocers was just below Shaw's yard, It was the only decent grocers in the district. Remember Kramer, the butcher, I think it was just across the road. Thinking about it, they didn't get all that many bombs down there because Herr Kramer was of German ancestry. Hey, I just made that up.

My late mum Alice lived in Marshall St near to Fowler with her parents and brother Walter. It was her 14th birthday on the day of the bombing and I remember her telling me that she had been out with friends and as she was coming home the raid started. as you can imagine , she was absolutely terrified and was running to try and get home. Her life was saved by a neighbour grabbing her and dragging her into their cellar. When they came out all was devastation but her family was lucky and they all survived although they were bombed out. Some of th story is a bit hazy and I would dearly love to be able to sit and talk with my lovely mum for just five minutes more. I'm sure I remember her saying that she still had to start work that week even after all the trauma. Just remind me of how lucky we all are nowdays .
