January 2009 Diary

WALKS

Because the days are shorter, and the possibility of bad weather being greater, January's walks have been planned for places that are easy to get to, and in areas where the paths are generally in good condition, even if the weather is bad. They are also fairly short in length, being mostly 5-6 miles long, with the option in all of them of cutting the walk short if the weather turns nasty. Here are the intended walks, all of which we have done before:-

Sunday 4th : Five Weirs/Canal. A round walk of 5-6 miles starting out from the Harlequin on Nursery Street, and ending there with some type of food laid on at the end of the walk. Great walk in winter when there's a good chance of spotting kingfishers and seeing other types of birdlife too. No-one leading this walk, we all know the way.

Sunday 11th: Rother Valley. Another great walk for the birdwatchers. Total distance about 5 miles, and almost all of it totally on the flat too. To be led by Scoobz

Sunday 18th: Grenoside. A fabulous walk through Greno Woods, and then on to the stunning Wharncliffe Crags. Scoobz leading this walk on his home territory, with the walk being rounded off with a great value for money buffet at the Old Harrow in Grenoside at the end. About 7 miles all told.

Sunday 25th. Ridgeway/Ford. A walk through the woods and fields to the South of Sheffield, to be led by Neoteric. Total distance about 6 miles.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Wednesday 7th: Curry night. Thai/Indian/Chinese restaurant Estikutum on Staniforth Road to be the venue. All-you-can-eat buffet for £9.90

Tuesday 13th/Thursday22nd: Games night on one of these 2 nights at a secret venue, and for clique members only :suspect:. Monopoly, Cluedo, Rummikub, Card games etc. More details later.

Friday 30th: Acoustic Angels at the Boardwalk. Great band playing live music in brilliant style for us to dance the night away to.

Other stuff

Neoteric will be arranging some longer Saturday walks, possibly further afield than the Sunday ones. More details as the year moves on.
Future Sunday walks suggested were Linacre Woods, Chesterfield Canal, Dovedale, Longnor, Alport, Wolfscote Dale and Tissington. Also, a day trip again to Flamborough when the clocks go forward.
Socials could include Ice skating (!) Swimming, Comedy Club night out.

Can I just wish a Merry Xmas and a prosperous New Year to everyone who has either been on a walk this year, or who enjoys reading about our expoits. And to anybody who is thinking about coming on a walk with us, can I just say don't leave it too long before you join us, you don't know what you're missing :)

Are there no hardy (or sober) souls out there up for a New Year's Day walk? Don't we usually brave the hangovers and go out somewhere?

Some regulars will for certain have hangovers on New Years Day, but I'll have a quick word in certain ears, and see if anyone's game!
