View Full Version : Parking in town, not free on Sunday anymore.

On Sunday we went into town, and went to park in the carpark behind the fire station, not the council one (thats always full), the other one with the little booth that the man sits in and takes your money. As we were walking out of the car park we noticed they have installed a machine now and you have to pay on Sunday, and it's more to park there on Sunday than on Saturday.

We were saying how the number fo free parking spaces in town is getting less and less and where would people park. We soon found out that they will park anywhere they like, on double lines (outside Cole Brothers toy shop) without a disabled badge, on the pavement (outside the central library) and even on the top of Fargate (5 cars parked on pavement outside Yorkshire Bank).

I'm thinking this is why people go to Meadowhall, it's free and there is (almost) always plenty of space.

On a Sunday, if I have to nip into town (which I never have to except to drink, in which case I'd bus it) I try to find a single yellow line. There are some of them, though like free on-street parking they're becoming an endangered species.

Campo Lane and I think Cambridge Street have sections where there are single-yellow lines and therefore you can usually park there on a Sunday for nowt.

But obviously check the signs beforehand. And although it's not on to charge on Sundays IMHO, I still think anyone parking on the pavement, especially Fargate, deserves a blooming parking fine.

There.

Are the council owned / operated ones still "free" on Sundays then?

(I was thinking specifically about the one near to the ill-fated "The Cage" health club up at the top end of Division / Devonshire St. ??? - opposite the Green Room etc..)

That used to be free on Sundays .. hoping it still is!

The coucnil owned one at the bottom of the Moor (behin the hulking empower? building) was free on Sundays.

The best way to make the council aware of your dissatisfaction in the way car-owners are treat in this City is simply by not going, go to Barnsely or Meadowhall, where car-owners are welcomed and theres loads of parking.

The mentality of Sheffield Council = Stop Cars, Hope people use Public Transport = Create insane one-way systems, cut back on car parking areas......Hmm, no one is using the public transport, lets put the prices up and cut back services, that'll make it even more tempting to leave the car at home..... :loopy:

Go to Barnsley, park up near the big new Morrisons, and find a clean tidy shopping precinct waiting for you, without dozens of big issue sellers or ' Have you got a minute love to answer a few questions...do you use a catalogue....can you say Guranga?..'

God you've got me on a roll now, I should never have stopped smoking

and I don't even drive :hihi:

Been using Meadowhall/ Barnsley/ Rotherham for years, Sheffield has been a no-go area for motorists as long as I can remember. Vote with your feet, take your hard earned pound notes elsewhere.

The car park behind the Fire Station WITHOUT the booth with the gennel leading to Carver St is free on Sundays :)

Ha, you look in the wrong place then. Park in the underground car park nearest the Argos entrance. Its tucked out of the way so people, especially visitors, dont think to park there.

Now that the council has taken responsibility for dishing out parking tickets, Sunday is no longer a day of rest in the City Centre.

Whilst I agree that a lot of people did park irresponsibly, the council has gone over the top and are taking a very heavy handed approach.

The fact is that there just isn't enough free parking space and people don't want to pay the NCP's rip off prices (IMO) just to spend a day in the city centre.

This approach is going to lead to a drop off in trade to what is already a quiet day. Compare the number of people in town with those at Meadowhell.

Surely a common sense approach would have been to work with NCP and agree a reasonable Sunday charge, then anyone who parks illegally would deserve a parking ticket.

I thought that the city council's car parks were free on a Sunday.

I had no problem parking in town for free earlier, and there were lots of free spaces in the car park too.

The councils car parks and on street parking are free. But my experience is that they fill up pretty quickly.

While I was in town today I saw at least a dozen cars with tickets that were parked in non-obstrusive places e.g. outside the Graduate

For info, my car wasn't one of them.

As I said, there was plenty of room where I parked, but I guess people like to park right outside where they're going and not have to walk a few yards.

I think they are right to issue tickets - why does it being Sunday make any difference?

Read my original post. It's the heavy handed approach that I am questioning. And Sunday is different because traders in town can't compete with Meadowhell due to parking.

Shouldn't this go under this thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43409&highlight=sunday+parking)?

The thing with NCP, is that there's no continuity.

If I use the NCP (York St) it costs £1.90 for upto an hour.

If I use the one above Rotherham bus station, it's free for up to an hour.
