View Full Version : Has anyone got a rat cage spare?
Hi all :)
Has anyone got a reasonably cheap, or even free rat cage or something similar that would accomodate a rat?
Apologies if this should be in the wanted section :D
Cheers,
Lewis

what is it that makes it a rat cage?
I have some cages about 1' long - let me know the sort of size he / she needs
rr
Hi RR,
Thanks for the reply
I suppose a cage that a rat could move around and play in nicely i suppose, not yet got him/her, but intend to.
A nicely sized on would be nice, as i could install platform etc. myself.

Around that size upwards really, i wouldn't want a rat in anything smaller than that. What's the size of your cages, in comparison RR?
Many thanks for the offer :D
Lewis
make sure the cage is big enough for two ratties...they are highly social and one rattie stuck on its own will be really miserable
hels1977 19-12-2008, 06:59 Rats need large spaces, much larger than other small rodents. And as Amy has said - company, at least 2 rats, 3 is a nice number as if one dies you're not left with a lone rat. They get terribly lonely alone - even with loads of human attention, annoyingly we can't speak "rat"!
There's a Rat Cage calculator here (http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/information/guides/cagecalculator/) but the Freddy is a nice cage as well - and would be great for 2 rats.
OP - I'd keep an eye on ebay, but also have a look at the market place here: http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/community/viewforum.php?f=22 you might well find something suitable at a good price!
Thanks for all the advice and info all :) I'll be getting 2 or 3 rats, as i know 1 will become lonely :(.
Considering the adobe, or the haven on following link-
http://www.petworlddirect.co.uk/acatalog/Rodent-and-Rabbit-Cages.
Wasn't wanting to spend a bomb, on a part time job, paying for driving lessons and it being christmas, but would want the rats to be in a nice home :).

hels1977 20-12-2008, 05:43 The abode is a nice cage Lewis and that's an incredible price tbh (on this one you posted http://www.petworlddirect.co.uk/acatalog/Rodent-and-Rabbit-Cages.html). You'd have to cover the shelves with fleece or lino but that's easy to do - wire floors aren't good for rats feet, but they'll love climbing in there and you can hang all sorts of hammocks and bird toys up!
Thanks for the help and advice all :)
I have bought The Abode, only to see a free, large, 3 level rat cage, all inclusive, ropes ladders etc. advertised the day after, but hey ho got a large cage arriving soon :)
hels1977, do you think the Abode would house 3 ratties comfortably?
Lewis :)
hels1977 22-12-2008, 13:31 Oh definitely! You can pack it out with lots of hammocks (rip up old clothes), ladders (bird toys), rope, all sorts, they'll absolutely love it!
Rainrescue 22-12-2008, 21:33 sorry - only just seen this thread and missed the earlier post
Mine was tiny or 48" so no doubt u have something more suitable now
clever ratties
RatGirl85 24-12-2008, 11:38 My rat died on wednesday last week and im now left with one very out going little boy, i want to get him a companion but i not sure howd id go about atchin his personality to another, should i take him to the petshop when i go and introduce???
please any advice is welcomed,
Lonely rat & sad rat girl :(
xx
hels1977 24-12-2008, 15:22 Awww RatGirl :( I'm really sorry to hear about your boy.
No please don't take your lone boy to a pet shop for introductions, you risk bringing infection in as well as stressing him out. Have you considered getting a couple of baby rescue rats? I say two - because they'll be more bouncy and your old lad might want to sleep more than they do, with a pair they can keep eachother company. Alternatively - you could register with a breeder to get some baby boys. There's always loads of little rescues needing forever homes from people who buy at pet shops and then "get rid" or get sold a male and female and end up with a ton of babies: http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/community/viewforum.php?f=23. Often people can sort out transport so don't let that put you off.
Good luck - PM me if I can help at all. :)
