I am wanting to join a gym and get fit this coming year, but I have a question:

what kind of trainers should I get to wear in the gym? I went into a couple of shops today in town and everything was really just "fashion trainer" style. I don't care what they look like, I just want to wear the right thing so that I don't injure myself.
What kind of trainers are good for general gym training? I intend to do things like treadmill running - don't know what else as I have never been to a gym.
Any advice please? thanks

The obvious option would be running shoes, but as you said alot of these are simply cosmetic. You could try asking people working in the shop, as they're bound to know something about the shoes they stock. Alternately, you could try squash or badminton shoes, as these are designed to protect the foot and ankle so should be suitable for all your gym needs.

Try "He Runs,She Runs" near WH Smiths in Meadowhall, very helpful, proper advice and real "sports" shoes.

I got some really, quite ugly grey ones from Decathlon for about a tenner.

They're well fitted and really comfy, and there's no way you could confuse these with the cosmetic types (did I mention they were ugly?)

I think they're called Karenji or something.

From what I can remember trainers come into 3 ranges, fashion, cross trainers and specialist, you want cross trainers.
