View Full Version : Should you clean up after your dog?
Jillybabes 06-06-2005, 11:20 I am appauled at the amount of dog mess around where we live and the number of people who dont clean up after their dog. I have a dog and always clean his mess up after, its disgusting I know but if we all just left it what a mess the streets would be. What do people think about this? There are people who work for the Council who 'sometimes' patrol the area and if you are caught not cleaning up the mess then you are fined. I dont think that this is enough though cos there is more dog mess than ever before. There are signs all over saying clean up after your dog or face a fine but nobody takes any notice. It really makes me angry especially if you are taking your dog out at night in the winter months when its dark and you cant see much and you come back with dog muck on your shoes because people just allow their dogs to foul anywhere and cannot be bothered to clean it up!
irenewilde 06-06-2005, 12:12 Couldn't agree more Jillybabes - we always cleaned up what our dog did in public - it's the only responsible thing to do. What amazes me is the amount of dog dirt on my daughter's school field and the paths leading into her school - it's an open site so people are allowed on there, but wouldn't you think they'd be a bit more careful??
And I guess that's why dogs are not allowed on many beaches these days - because people didn't clean up after them there either. It used to be a bit miserable when we turned up at the seaside with dog and child in tow to find we couldn't go on any beaches at all (or only the really grotty ones!) Everyone suffers for the few irresponsible ones...
youwhatref 06-06-2005, 12:26 I can also not stand those whose dog does their business on the paths or short grass/fields. I always clean up after my pooch although i admit that i walk my pooch off the track and he always goes in the long stuff out of the way where no one goes.
This i dont always clean up as it's sometime difficult to get to and well out of the way.
People who don't clean up after their dogs should have the offending mess fired through their letterboxes at high speeds.
Jillybabes 06-06-2005, 14:09 Good one Carmine, I like the idea of firing it through the offending people's letterboxes. That made me chuckle!
Swan_Vesta 06-06-2005, 14:17 If you've seen the ad for the Nintendo DS where the chap uses his DS induced powers to return the doggy poo "from whence it came" then you'll know what I'd like to do to the mucky swine who let their dogs crap on playing fields/pavements/parkland ...... except it would be the owner who is on the receiving end.
If people want pets then they really should excercise responsibility, that means getting them spayed, making sure they are well cared for and picking up their mess. Anything else is woefully short of the mark.
It'd sure make them think about what they'd done!:D
More and more people these days have those s**t anywhere leads, you know the ones, where the dog can walk a mile in front of the owner, or vice versa. We own a caravan on the east coast, and the amount of dog mess on the proms, beach and footpaths as well as round the caravans is disgusting. If I see anyone letting their dogs crap outside my van, I ask them to clear it up. As for the warden who patrols the parks (allegedly!) I would do the job voluntarily, just for the satisfaction of making them clean up their pets mess, and take some sort of responsibility.
I have 3 dogs and cleaning up after them is the responsible thing to do. I dont care where they do it, if they shi*, they Shi*!, and that shi*, belongs to me. And i have to shift it.:gag: I must admit though you do get some really funny looks from people watching you pick the stuff up!!:gag:
Id love to turn round and say "Want some?":heyhey:
nappysacks are not just for nappy's.
Draggletail 06-06-2005, 15:58 Can you believe it - some people don't like you clearing up after your dog!
Dog owner gets grief for clearing up poo! (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38664&highlight=dog+owner+grief/)
The world's gone mad! I'm sure it has! I mean come on, if your dog does a doo doo SURELY it's common courtesy to clean up after it?!
I mean, yeah there aren't always dog bins around, but you could scoop it up in a bin bag and chuck it in somebody's wheely bin as a last resort.
I certainly would if I had a dog.

Some people have had it put on their car windscreens ;)
But but Pooh in the Letter box's some of us have to put your Mail through there :D :D :D
Mind would you notice the diffrece between the 2 with most of the stuff?
With 5 pooches nappy sacks are just not quite big enough, but more to the point which do you see more of litter & rubbish strewn around or dog mess ?
Yes there are lots of people who do not clean up after their pets but how many parents make their kids pick rubbish up after they have deposited it on the ground ? not many i'll bet.

My dog refuses to "go" anywhere but in our back yard. Even after a very long walk.
I spend a fortune in bleach cleaning the place up!

Some people snigger while you're picking it up...... Mind you I have to double up on carrier bags when I walk Mishka...and a spade would be good sometimes too!
My friend asked if she could walk Mishka because it would help her pull a man.....Half way into her first walk I got a text from her that said "No fit men, 1 massive dump and I'm knackered"
:D
yorkiepudd 06-06-2005, 21:30 Any chance some of you lovely, responsible dog owners want to come and live around here....
We have a grass area opposite our houses, only about 4 foot wide, and I make sure it is well kept, but this just seems to serve as an invite for all the local dog walkers to make a beeline for it, and because there are no houses that side, they think it's ine just to let them do it and then walk away.
It is fine, until my kids come in covered in it.....

So, do you clean up after your five dogs, playman?
And no, you can't excuse people dropping litter, or not teaching their kids to pick up litter.
Out of the two 'evils' I would say dog mess is definitely the worst.
For example, I would be far happier (given a choice) if I stood on an ice cream wrapper or even a discarded burger, than dog excrement.
We clean up after our dog.
thomsongirl 06-06-2005, 23:07 You should always clean up after your dog, I do even if I do nearly get fined for putting it in a black bin!
i have to agree with playman on this.we have 5 dogs & we always clean up after them, but the council should give thought to us having to carry it for miles 'cos there's no bin for it.
sweet wrappers etc weigh less & don't stink so why not take them home instead of littering.and please don't get me started on disposed of disposable nappies in laybys & beaches.!!
Jillybabes 07-06-2005, 09:15 Too right there are no bins for the dog poop when you do clean it up. We have to carry it around until we get home. The nearest doggie bin is miles up the road and the only one around our area. Sort yourself out Sheffield Council and give us more doggie bins and then maybe there wouldnt be as much mess for us to stand in.
Maybe we should look into the development of doggie-nappys?
You'd also be amazed at how big a cr*p a cat can produce.
My little darling is housebound as he only has three legs, two teeth and is knocking on for his teens.
The fact that he can't triangulate his ars* and his back legs means that he always misses the target (rather like a Yank presicion bomber).
He gave up trying to hit the tray with his t*rds a long time ago and now he just goes on the floor by the tray.
"Yay Tripod...making my house smell like a septic tank 24-7!" :gag: :nono:
BoppinBruce 07-06-2005, 09:34 Surely the whole point is that it has been found that anybody that comes into contact with dog faeceas, is that how posh people spell it? and transfers to mouth, can go blind.
This is particularly hazardous when there is long grass where children can run thru.
I regularly walk my dog thru the Bolehills and down to Rivlin and am never short of being shocked when fellow dog walkers tell me they wont clear it up because it is in the long grass. This is the exact place it should be cleaned up, where you cant see it.
Sheffield should employ snooper pooper scoopers to fine those that do not clean up after their dogs
Ahh a subject close to my heart.
Every day I have to walk along Spring Hill Road twice (once on my way to work and once home again). I usually end up walking on the road because the pavement is just *covered* in dog poo. It makes me so angry! And I'm obviously not the only one because I noticed someone had put up a little cardboard sign asking whoever was letting their dog foul the pavement to stop. There are on average about 2 new poos on the pavement every day - and it's a small road.
I was walking home from town along Spring Hill Road quite late one night and saw a man walking his three dogs - all of them off the lead, all of them pooping on the pavement, and the man pretending not to notice and sauntering on ahead. Ooooh it made me so cross but I didn't say anything because I'm not in the habit of approaching strange men alone at night...
I did wonder about letting the council know though. Would they do anything?
Yes of course i clean up after them but we only take them out in shifts walking two sets of two then the other one, at our last national boxer ball we gave out over 1000 poo bags to dog owners who attended and will endeavour to do the same again later this month.
But the bins are still very few and far between, we had 3 nearby until last november 5th when some little darlings blew one apart with the contents still inside and has still to be replaced, the tenants association pay for the emptying of the bins.
Yes they all look the other way and pretend not to see what there dog is doing so they can say i never saw it.
paultheboxerman
We pick up after our dog and I have absolutely no qualms about challenging any dog owners who don't. I know there are dog poo officers, but there are only two for the whole of Sheffield and they tend to concentrate on green spaces other than parks. I always carry spare bags and if I see an owner not picking up their dog poo I point out that they might not have noticed and then offer them a bag - at this stage they either usually pick it up apologising or just start swearing at me. If it the latter I wait until they walk away and then point at them and shout to everyone else in the park that I can see that they haven't picked up their dog's poo and some child could go blind because of it. I think the more that we make it socially unacceptable the more people will pick it up, a bit like smoking really. For anyone who gets really abusive, I contact the dog warden, give them a description and just ask them to make a visit to the park at the time I normally see that person - a £50 fine should help them to see the error of their ways.
Horrid aren't I? Better make sure you pick up your dog's poo if you see me coming:rant:

Just to let you know that this is not an adequate defence and if you try to get out of paying a fouling fine with this lame excuse then it will be enforced anyway plus court costs
Should you clean up after your dog?
Of course you should - no excuse not to. Though more bins would be appreciated if you are reading this city council.
Who has the happy task of emptying them? Is it done in still of the night as I haven't seen this task completed on my many walks in the parks.
Like your style Sara on the offenders!! Made me laugh.
Lotti - are you reading this? Get nappy bags on your list of what you have to buy. In fact let me know when you are getting your doggie and I'll send a pack as a pressie!:)
yes and if you don't you are a ****
In response to a number of points raised:
There are an increasing number of bins being installed across the City. Some are paid for by tenants associations, some by area panels, some centrally. The cost of emptying is now bourne by the Council, not the group that pays for installation. The bins in the fields near us are regularly emptied in the day time as I see the Dog Wardens attending (always close the windows though!). If there are problem areas, get onto the Dog Wardens, local TARA or councillor. More attention can be given to the area and warning notices / stickers posted to remind of the fines. Whilst this doesn't always work with some of the morons who allow dogs to foul and not clear up, it may change one person's attitude.
I think anyone keeping a dog should be made responsible for their mess. On the other hand, keepers of cats should also be made responsible for the mess they make, especially when its on other peoples' gardens
My 2 dogs are trained to go to the toilet, wipe their arses and then flush it after themselves. It saves me a lot of embarassment and money on nappy sacks.
Anyone not cleaning up after their dogs, especially in a place where children play, is wrong. I play football on Saturday mornings and people often let their dogs **** on the pitch and just walk off. IDIOTS
If i find out who let their dog lay a vast steamy pile in front of my drive I will go round to their house and curl one down on their doorstep. See how they like it.
I very nearly rode through it on my bike. If anyone has ever done this they will know that the general procedure is not just poo on wheel, but poo on every part of body, particularly at high speed. :gag:
