View Full Version : Can anyone provide a high definition map
I am looking for a high definition map (JPEG, Tiff, BMP) of the Loxley area. The ones from Multimap etc don't have enough detail. Is there any kind person out there who has access to GIS or Mapping software who can provide a copy free for a community group. The area we are wanting goes from Studfield Hill to the Damflask & from Myers Lane down to Spout Lane. Sheffield City Council can't do this as they have fixed boundaries for neighbourhoods and in our case they don't make much sense.
TIA

While we are on the subject!!!
does anyone know if google maps cover england yet?
Well that is going to be one expensive OS. Even at a lousy scale like 1:20,000 its £27. If you want anything better, say 1:5,000 (which is still pretty 'low definition') it will be over £800.
I assume that the 'community group' is wanting to stop the Hepworths site being developed?
Any 'free' map will be in breach of copyright. Perhaps you should have a whip round?

They only cover UK and USA I think.

The community group will do whatever the community wants, the first step is to ask them! How can you be sure that any free map would be a breach of copyright?
Guys can we try to keep this on topic please.
try

I just think that you should be honest about why you want the map for your 'community group'.
I thought I was quite helpful TBH. In fact it cost a couple of quid to give you the last response!
If you want it to object to the development of the Hepworth site and / or the Myers Grove College site then why can't you just say so? It would be rather duplicitous to just ask for something without saying why you wanted it. After all, everyone else pays for this information in order to not infringe copyright.
Trouble is Tony that you are jumping to conclusions. I want the map to accompany a questionnaire that we are distributing, of the 50 questions in the document there are 4 on planning related issues. I am more than willing to pay for a map but as a Yorkshireman I'll always try and get one for free if at all possible.
Is that open and honest enough for you?

Is this any good:?

If you want dedicated mapping at OS Pathfinder scale (1:10,000) or better, then you can order a sheet centred on your postcode (upstairs floor of Blackwells in Broomhill do this). I don't know about pricing, but I don't reckon it's cheap.
You can put your postcode in the bottom right-hand box on this page (http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/) (Get-a-Map) which will show you what you want. You can then order a hard copy online if you want (Buy-a-Map).
jgharston 07-06-2005, 10:36 When I did my boundary review stuff I used the 1:50,000 ('one-inch') maps from the OS. I bought a lisence for about £160 which let me make 100 copies and put a version on my website.
What sort of scale do you need? Try going to the Local Studies library at Surrey Stret. Explain that you need to make a draft sample to send to the OS to show what and which maps you want to get duplication permission for.
There's implicit provision in copyright restrictions that you can copy a part of a work to show which part of that work you want to get psermission to copy.

Just to point out that "Get-a-Map" will only go down to 1:25,000 scale.
Unfortunately I need it at least 1:10000 scale.
