Mine was on the shiregreen. I did the bottom end of harteybrook road from the shops right down to where the sicey hotel used to be plus all side roads. My star round had about 76 papers. I did every morning and 6 nights for £5 a week.
Mine was on the Arbourthorne.I had about 50 papers (The Star) every day and the News of the World on Sunday all for 2 shillings and sixpence a week. But that was in 1964 65.

waxonwaxoff 18-12-2008, 11:03 Mine was loxely road. No sun or mirror readers up there. All daily mail readers and the guardian. My bag weighed a tonne. They always had the smallest letter boxes for the biggest papers too. I dont think I used to end up with much money left. I used to spend most of it on chocolates and crisps while I was delivering the papers. :D
segasonic 18-12-2008, 12:40 Mine was Gleadless Road, Abney and the tower blocks across from Newfield Green, or Fleury, Spring Close and Middle Hay. Often did both routes, I was somewhat fitter in those days :)

Mid 70's era...
For my first ever paper round the newsagent used to leave the papers in the telephone box at the Tom Lane/Carsick Hill Road junction where I would pick them up and do Tom Lane/Hillcote Drive/Carsick Hill Road. Stone Delf (where I lived)/Slayleigh Ave/Chorley Road got added a few months later and I got a pay rise
The Tom Lane/Carsick round then got changed to a major trek up and down Slayleigh Lane including the flats at the Slayleigh Lane/Fulwood Road junction plus the existing Stone Delf round. I managed to offload the Slayleigh Lane bit very quickly due to being knackered and regularly late for school - I just couldn't walk fast enough up that ruddy hill!
I eventually ended up with just Stone Delf/Slayleigh Ave and got yet another pay rise for what was more or less a 10 minute stroll up and down my own street
Powerage 18-12-2008, 22:27 I only did sunday mornings started from High Storrs Rd down Greystones Rd and all the side roads off. The thing that sticks in my mind is I had two packets of cigarettes to deliver with one bundle of papers to an old man, can you imagine the stink up if a paper shop asked a 13/14 year old to do that today ? That was about 77/78 I got 50p and thought I was rich:)

whitewitch 18-12-2008, 22:50 Mine was on the Langsett Estate, Hillsborough/Lower Walkley, I only did the morning one, cant remember how much money I got now
Mine was in Chapeltown, Station Rd, Thorncliffe Rows, Commerce St and Arundel Rd. Early '60s, got 6 shillings and 6 pence a week. No Sundays.
Mine was 1953/4 Parson Cross, Wordsworth Ave /Margetsos Crescent and Millnrow Drive and Road
Just over 100 customers
Twice a day, once for the morning papers and once for the Star.
Thursday special delivery 'Radio Times.
Saturday Green-Un Sunday I needed a wagon to carry them
Fri night I collected, all for 12/6 a week
Yes and don't forget about our dog which made your round a bit more interesting. :hihi:
Blimey £5 was a lot compared to what some of you got. Mind you it was a few years before i did them so what with inflation and all that.
Me and my brother started delivering that free paper on the shiregreen called The champion but there were so many to get rid of we ended up having a fire every week to get rid of the bulk of them. Needless to say we got rumbled eventualy.
hillsbro 19-12-2008, 08:07 Hillsborough (of course...) In 1962-3 I delivered papers for Ron Starling who had a shop in Middlewood Road. An ex-footballer, he captained Wednesday when they won the F.A. Cup in 1935. Great bloke.
Didn't have a paper round myself but helped a girl in our yard. Addy street the stretch between Ashburry and Horam St, Martin Street and several of the 13 storey flats on there and back up Oxford Street to Whiteheads shop
Beesa rider 19-12-2008, 11:17 Mine was an evening Star round circa 1962 from Herrings paper shop at Oakbrook Road. I went down Rustlings Road and up the various side streets round Peveril Rd.
Then I did Sunday mornings along Oakbrook onto Riverdale Rd. I was doing that round at the time when Sunday Supplements came in, all of a sudden the paper bag weighed twice as much and it became impossible to cycle whilst carrying the full load.
Happy days, and the Christmas Eve round was heaven with loads of tips !
Late 1970s, around Crosspool... Stephen Hill, Den Bank Road/Close etc, Manchester Road, Coldwell Lane, across the playing fields (when the Star was reporting that the Yorkshire Ripper's next victim would be in Sheffield - I took the dog with me!!!) up to Ringstead Crescent and back into Crosspool..
Good fun!!! :hihi: :hihi:
Mid 50s: Stradbroke Dr, Stradbroke Cresc, blocks of flats on Smelter Wood Rd. Smelter Wood Way. Mornings only, but including Sat & sun. for a newsagent in a row of shops nr Woodthorpe bus terminus. 7/6d per wk.
Steptoad 19-12-2008, 21:24 75/76, evenings, 13/14 papers around Dover Rd, Wilson Rd, Wigful Rd and Botanical Gardens Rd for 25p a week. Then moved onto another shop and delivered around Psalter Lane and Nether edge twice as many papers. Later did the same area in the mornings and by the time I left to get a "proper job", in 1981, I was on £8.50 a week.
I was once mugged by a couple of large dogs who nicked my paper bag I spent half an hour trying to gret it back I once had large dog smash through a glass door to try and get me and then there was the customer who swore blind that she'd seen me riding around her garden on my bike king over her ornamental urns and statues. Fortunately my boss knew I didn't have a bike.
Mine was on the Arbourthorne.I had about 50 papers (The Star) every day and the News of the World on Sunday all for 2 shillings and sixpence a week. But that was in 1964 65.
ps Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I delivered from the Northern Avenue post office (Allotts).Mornings were 9d per day, evenings 1/- per day,Sunday 2/6d per round. This was up to 1963 when I left school.I remember there was a girl also delivering then which seemed strange at the time.I struggled up Arbourthorne Road with the massive Sunday round thanking the gods for only one Sunday Times reader. When I started work as an apprentice electrician I had less money when my mother took my board. It always seemed dark delivering to the Arbourthorne hotel.I remember the joints in the prefab roads when I rode over them delivering.I was delivering when the storm blew down lots of prefabs.
Evenings and Sunday from the shop near Grenoside, down Halifax Road and the drive ways were two miles long(well nearly, they were the posh houses) and when I tried hopping over the divide the customer told me I had to use their front drive and walk up each one, Don`t know how but I always seem to be short of papers. That was for 2/6p per week in 1950.
Gleadless Valley early 1960s. Hut on Leighton Rd.
Morning and evening papers mon-sat. Sunday papers and money collection. And all for a quid a week.:(
Uphill both bloody ways aswell.
Got to read all the comics for free though.
I got 7/6 (old money) 37.5 (decimal) for doing every morning before school, and an evening round after school and sunday mornings. I worked for Fourboys on Manor Park centre.
Mind you it was the early 50s.
My sack used to be so heavy that the muscles on one side of my waste got so weak i ended up leaning to one side. After a couple of years i was offerd a "better" job packing potatoes all day saturday for a fiver
bassplayer 22-12-2008, 16:44 Mine was at Walkey, but split between my younger brother, I did Walkley Bank Road Hawthorne Street and Storrs Hall Rd, great people great tips and good memories....
I only did evening Stars, from the paper shop at the top of Manor Lane (now a hairdressers). It was down Manor Lane, delivering to Vineys and the vicarage at the bottom, then up City Road to the little garage (where theyve now built some new flats), down the little gennel onto Norfolk Park, along St Aidens Road to Granville Road, then up Norfolk Park Avenue. All for a fiver a week.

A fiver a week??? You struck it rich.
That was around 1988/89 ish.
jennym705 23-12-2008, 20:28 Firth park crescent, avenue and road, Bevercotes road and Windmill lane. Hated those 'posh' and heavy sunday papers lol. £1.32 a week and an extra quid for delivering the Stars 6 nights a week.
Mine was Wincobank, Standon Road ,Jedbugh St , Woobury Rd, 6 Mornings & 6 Nights, (Mon to Sat,) for 6 Shillings a week,!!!. (30 pence,). Two Large paper bags in the morning & 118 Stars at night, plus trying to collect paper monies on Sat night.!! ( That was a laugh,!!!). But happy memories,.
I delivered from Pembertons at Meadowhead, My route being just one road, Norton Lane, It started just past the Norton Pub with my last delivery being at the Country club opposite Norton church, The Sunday suppliments used to treble the weight as I remember
pitsmoorlad 30-12-2008, 10:58 My Sheffield Star paper round from Marshall's on Nottingham Street took me up and down the Andover Street flats.
At first I used to get the lift to the top floor of each block, then walk down delivering to each floor.
Then I got smart. If I took the lift that did the even numbered floors , then pressed all the floor numbers , the door would open long enough for me to put the papers through the letter boxes and get back in the lift. Then I'd do the same with the odd numbered floors.
Probably ended up being the quickest paper round in the area.
Mid to late 70's around the Angram Bank estate in High Green from the newsagents on the Fosters. 1.90 a week for 65 papers a day and the green un's on Saturday ..........
My round took in lower wincobank, Barrow Rd, Newman Rd, Vauxhall Rd etc, 1970-71, I delivered for Beedhams on Fife St, morning papers & the star, 6 days a week for 17/6 (87 1/2p).
Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past.
My paper round was passed onto me by my brother and I passed it onto my little brother when I left, I used to work for Dennis on Burgoyne Road, the round was Cundy Street, Industry Street and the one above it, Tennyson Road, and Hawksworth Road, and the road that runs across the three, used to do both the morning and evening rounds and sundays, and also any round that was not being delivered, those were the days when I used to run up Cundy St with a bag full or papers would be lucky to be able to walk up it now.

Hi
I did a simmilar round from the newsagent in Nether green in 1972/73, the round was so long that it was shared you only actualy did it 3 days per week. Some of the drives up to the houses constituted a round on their own. The Christmas tips were excellent.
Hi Pete R, My Wincobank paper round was a litte bit earlier than yours, 1951/1952. I delivered for Wadsworths, but by Sat , (pay day,) most of the paper lads had "subbed" at least half our wages in sweets,!!!. I was lucky if i got 2 or 3 shillings to draw, (12/15 pence.) Some job eh!!!!.
My paper round (1963), Started at Elstones paper shop, nethershire lane, lower shiregreen,up Bellhouse rd,then turn left,Oaks Fold, then down Mason laithe rd all the way to the Penquin, then the Ravine, If my memory is correct, for 7 mornings and 6 nights(The Star), I got 14 Shillings, Always remember getting paid after our sunday morning round, and spending 2 shillings on sweets and pop in the same shop.
In those days I thought I was loaded when I got my pay,(A Ten shilling note, and 2 Florins) :-)
My paper round (1958) also started at Elstones paper shop, Nethershire Lane, 7 mornings and 6 nights, Ronksley/Wheatshief/Ronksley was the title of my round. I used to get paid Sunday morning (about ten bob I think), used to spend the rest of the day and most of the money in Derbyshire.
I also had a part time job as a wringer out for a one arm window cleaner.:hihi:
My paper round was passed onto me by my brother and I passed it onto my little brother when I left, I used to work for Dennis on Burgoyne Road, the round was Cundy Street, Industry Street and the one above it, Tennyson Road, and Hawksworth Road, and the road that runs across the three, used to do both the morning and evening rounds and sundays, and also any round that was not being delivered, those were the days when I used to run up Cundy St with a bag full or papers would be lucky to be able to walk up it now.

I also did that paper round in the late 60s got around 7/6. God it was knacking.
My round was Langsett Avenue and all roads off it! That kept me fit.
I was paid 12/6 in 1963/4. I saved my pay to go on a school trip to Belgium and my oldest brother (who was working) doubled what I saved.
Marion
sycamore66j 17-01-2009, 00:23 my paper round started at singletons haulage yard on high street ecclesfield, then up high street /st marys lane/priory rd/ and down church street. 50 pence per week for the mornings and 40 pence for the star.sunday rounds were paid seperate at 12 and a half pence per round. this would have been early 70,s. all weathers!! no bike!! happy days.
pitsmoorlad - what years did you do marshalls, I worked there around 79, used to hate it when someone didn't turn in at the firshill shop and you were asked to cover the round up there.
I had quite a few episodes with dogs on the rounds, perhaps they knew I had a fear of them.
I dont think there was newspapers when I was young, I seem to remember a man in a funny hat would come around ringing a big bell and shouting the news at full blast, wake me up in the morning he would :D:D:D

The Town Crier!:wow: How old are you flyer ?:hihi:
david_riveli 17-01-2009, 22:50 Mine was Attercliffe about 1965 for the newsagent/aqua equipment shop called Namrons on Staniforth Rd junction opposite the baths. I delivered on Clay St, Liverpool St, Whitworth Lane (by the old cop shop) and Hall Road and many more which I can no longer remember. Most of these have all long gone now covered by industrial estates and the Don Valley Stadium etc. Norman the owner of Namrons (corny or what?) was the biggest tight wad going and 'fined' you a couple of coppers (£sd in them days) at every opportunity missing a house etc. Got sick and tired of it when one week he stopped me 1/6 a lot of money then, price of a pint (beer not milk). Got my own back I did'nt tell him that I was jacking it in, just one sunday I dumped all the papers in a bin and went home! Good job he didn't know my address as I lived at Grimesthorpe at that time. 12 months later I started work at the Cleansing Dept. for the princely sum of £348 per annum, happy days.
Early 70's did stocksbridge/deepcar round and i wore platform shoes ! only did it a few week after school . The heavy bag i carried ruined my hotpants. lol !
Only 75 (next week) but with the sort of year I've had I feel like 175:(:(

Well you haven't lost you're sense of humour:thumbsup: (Better keep on topic):suspect:
i had 2 rounds in Oughtibridge where i lived for 30 years.

50's chick 18-01-2009, 02:05 mine was highmoor, killamarsh for a couple of yrs and then we moved to millhouses and i did buttermere rd and all that area
In the 70s I did a round on the Base Green, Jaunty, Seagrave,Elstree. from Brooks newsagents opp Gleadless Church. Also did the Durlstone round occasionally which had 60+ papers which was murder on Friday when the Star was the thickest. If anyone complained about paper being missing or late then the cost of the paper was deducted from pay, 7p a paper..... tight sods who ran the newsagent.
bullerboY 04-04-2009, 20:56 I worked for Tugbies at the top of Longley Ave West in 1955-7 my round was mornings L.A.W.,Musgrave Cres,Musgrave Drive top half Musgrave Rd.Evenings were the same plus Miles Rd and Musgrave place,Sundays were L.A.W,Crumpsall Rd and drive and half of bottom Musgrave Rd,so if any one out there forgot my Christmas tips please get in touch.Mr and Mrs Tugby were brilliant with methey would always save me doubles as they knew Ihad bought a bike from Wiggys that i couldnt afford.Basic pay was 13s 1d a week but I could make a lot more. The business passsed to there daughter and son -inlaw Alec & Dot Quayle.Sadly they recently died and are buried near where I live in Rotherham.
I worked for Whitam & warne, which was in the row of shops next to the Forum Cinema, my first delivery was the Magnet pub, then along Southey Green Road to Crowder Road, and then back along Southey Hall Road. Saturday night was Green Un night, so I got plenty of tips, but the Sunday papers were very heavy for a small bloke like me at the time, so I got a bike from Wiggy's and had to pay it off, I only got 12 bob a week, but it was worth my while at the time.

I had that same round in 1970! only slight differences were 1) in between Oaks Fold and Mason Laithe I had a couple of houses on Oaks Fold Rd, and 2) didn't do the Ravine. I remember the guy in charge at the paper shop was a right grumpy so and so (big fattish guy with sideburns, cant remeber his name). Once I was away somewhere, on a trip I think, and he had someone else covering my round. He couldn't find the card for the round for the other kid so he went round to our house hammering on the door in a temper. My Dad, who was quite handy with his fists, almost slotted him one. The card turned up later - it had fallen behind a shelf in the shop.
didn't have news papers when i was young, a man with a big bell just walked around shouting out any news

wardlow1889 19-02-2010, 21:47 I did a round from Jack's paper shop at the Intake terminus Mon-Sat. I went up City Road and then into the estate behind and then across to the houses at the back of the Intake club. I think I got £1.20
I also had a Sunday paper round for the place on Frecheville shops and did Smalldale, Churchdale and other roads round the Frecheville Community Centre. And the best bit was stopping off on my way round for a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea at my uncles. I needed it because I must have had close to 60 papers but I think I got about 60p  for the round because it was pretty big.
sparkyfred 19-02-2010, 21:51 didn't have news papers when i was young, a man with a big bell just walked around shouting out any news

Yep, Sunday was the worst - all those heavy Sunday supplements that you could hardly get through the letterboxes. I used to get home and have about 6 slices of toast lathered in butter and marmalade and then have a kip on the settee.
Mine was in 1965 Handsworth. Bramley estate got about 10 shilling for morning papers, Star, Green un, and Sunday papers. In those days we were glad of the money.
Garthai,

I can't remember what age I was when we moved into the corner house 66 Fentonville St. (Back enterance was off Penely Street) I was 15 when we moved out in 1962.
The names don't ring a bell. A family called France lived on the oposite corner
911wasalie 20-02-2010, 17:20 Garthai,
Pete Elliott lived 2 doors away from you but you were a youngster when he got married and moved out but his parents lived there at the other side of Penley St. so it would have been 62 or 70 Fentonville St., I lived on Priory Terrace.

Pete Elliott lived 2 doors away from you but you were a youngster when he got married and moved out but his parents lived there at the other side of Penley St. so it would have been 62 or 70 Fentonville St., I lived on Priory Terrace.
We had a corner house & our yard shared with a building on Penley St. I say building it was a house used by a builders merchant (paints & such) for a shop on London Rd.
Next yard there was 2 possible 3 houses which would have included no.70, No children my age so I can't really comment. The oposite of the road was 64 the corner house (France was the name) a bigger back yard than most probably connected to 5 houses 64-56 (France at 64 & Bailice or Bailis at 56)
I think Pete Elliott must have lived next door to the France family at 62
My mates lived at the other end probably (guessing 78 & the oposite odd numbers side of the road. & on Franklin also on Penely St.
Priory Rd was off Sharrow Lane the other side continuation of Fentonville. We used to go up there on our way to Kenwood Pk Road.

Morris was still boss when I worked there, heard he retired eventually.
mine was for the post office on Jenkin road. Sundays were a killer bottom to top with 2 bags every sunday, what a killer
mine was down hillfoot, farfield rd etc now it`s all industrial units
I did my paper round from Manor lane post office best round there one street Manor Park Cresent, heavy on sundays not bad mid week.I then progressed to marking up paper rounds at the back of the post office, many a time had to knock up wilf richardson the owner ,he used to throw me the keys from the bedroom window, happy days.
i did popple street & surounding streets & the wensly estate every evening & weekend.this was in the late 80's early 90's from underwoods newsagents at pagehall
How about Twentywell Lane Bradway. So steep. 12/- for mornings and 3/- for Sunday in 1965. Imagine chewing gum was 6d. Big hole in the 3 bob. Used to get a lift back of the milk float. Health & Safety!!!!!
lynnielass 13-08-2010, 07:32 my round was the Weakland Estate, 7s 6p a week delivering evening star! thursdays delivery was the worse
dsweetman 14-08-2010, 18:32 I delivered to the Knab farm estate shortly after it was built.I was the first motorised paper boy in Sheffield (I had a cyclemaster)I cannot remember the newsagents name in Abbedale Road but their son was killed whilst riding his bike(mowed down by a car).I cannot remember how much I was paid either.
mine was on the manor started fairfax rd the circle raven carr harborough ave back to fairfax got £2 a week.
kev21662 21-08-2010, 02:50 I did rounds in Burncross between 1976 and 1981; weekdays and Saturday mornings and evenings (The Star) and Sunday mornings. Mine covered Chapel Road, Broad Inge Crescent and Bevan Way. Kevin.
I delivered the Sheffield Star around Stannington - 34 papers on 6 evenings - I was paid the princely sum of £1.37p for the week.
I can remember one house whose letterbox was so sharp that I often cut my hand on it as the paper went in - the house owner actually complained that his paper was always ripped and I got the blame !
Apparently you don`t have the young uns doing the rounds now as most of them employ the retired to do it or so i`m told anyway.
My round was from Washington Rd, Pearl street, Cenetary Road, Top end of Sharrow Lane to Nether Edge.
I forget what the weekley pay was but those Christmas tips were unforgetable.
Yes they were. Always made sure i gave each house an xmas card. With 70+ customers if you got only a pound from each, which in the 70`s was a lot of money, it ended up a tidy sum
whitewitch 21-08-2010, 09:32 I did the Hillsborough side of Langsett Estate in the late 80's, only did the mornings though, cant remember what I was paid, worked from Mick's papershop on Langsett Road.
fox20thc 21-08-2010, 09:35 I did the Hillsborough side of Langsett Estate in the late 80's, only did the mornings though, cant remember what I was paid, worked from Mick's papershop on Langsett Road.
Mick seems to do most of his own paper deliveries these days, he shuts up shop and toddles off on his rounds.
My round was at Nether-edge, up Steade Road and onto Kenwood Park Road. It was a right drag going up the hills with the papers. I also did Sunday mornings on Broadfield Road across the bridge that was there then to deliver to the cottages, one morning I fell down a coal hole which wasn't secure and got a right bruised leg, today it would be compensation wouldn't it :D:roll:
I used to have a paper round in my early teens in the Owlerton area. The paper shop was opposite The Old Blue Ball the owner was called Mr Turner;I used to take the earley mornings up Hawksley Ave. Bradfield Rd;Owlerton Green before school. After school I delivered the Star;for this I earned the princely sum of 15 shillings a week. One of the houses I went to an old lady had it full of cats;lots of cats;when she opened the door the stench was overpowering how she lived in it Ill never know. The one thing Ill never forget happened up Owlerton Green this certain house had a viscious dog;it tried to to attack me every time I showed my face. The only thing stopping it was a chain holding the door ajar a few inches;anyway I used to roll their paper up and give the beast a crack on its snout nice and hard at every delivery. One teatime I strolled in their yard preparing to give Rover his daily smack when to my horror the door opened;I made a bolt for the gate ;I almost made it but I had the paper bag over my shoulder. In my panic I tried to jump the wall ;Rover clamped on my arse and nearly tore a pound of flesh off it.I couldnt sit down for a week;I supposed I deserved it.
I had a paper round at pitsmoor and the newsagent was on scott rd and called ernest bell. Used to hate sundays and all the big thick papers and magazines and there was one bloke who seemed to have nearly all the sunday papers and the letter box was about 4inch wide and about an inch in height and took me ages to undo all the papers to fit into the letterbox, though i suppose the householder had the same fun putting them back together again
Yes I did have a paper round in my youth... I delivered 100 papers per night for the grand sum of £1 then when I started collecting money on Friday nights my wages rose to £1.10p per week. My daughter had a paper round 15 years ago and she delivered 25 papers and got payed £3.50 think I might look into what paper rounds are paying now... much more fun plus Christmas tips and look at the exercise you get...lol
As for my brother he delivered morning papers and thought nothing to drinking the odd pint of milk if thirsty... brothers eh lol
PaulTansley 23-03-2011, 21:42 I had one in Pitsmoor and worked for Marshalls on Nottingham St it was a hefty one doing Denholme and Marcus area but when the fair came to Bridgehouses I had to hyke right down there good job it left a week later
charliewag 24-03-2011, 12:29 i delivered papers around the top part of grenoside in the early 70's. thursdays were the worst with all the tv/radio times. one cottage had some geese and i used to tip toe down the gravel path hoping the geese wouldn't hear me. i got chased a few times but they never got me! out in all weathers for £1.50 a week.
I had one on the shiregreen in the early 70`s. I did mornings and the star for 6 days and the sunday papers for £5 a week

Never had one, but us kids use to shout GREEN-UN and hide in the bushes.
G12Ravda 25-03-2011, 21:20 I worked for Albert Wharton. He had the paper-shop on Shirland Lane, in Darnall. I learned all the rounds, so if one of the lads didn't turn up, I covered his round. This got me nine bob a week. The Sunday rounds were heavy.
I covered from Balfour Road at one end to Candow and Harmore Street, at the other. I seem to remember that these two streets were known as "Canned-up and hard-up."
I did this for a couple of years, 'til full-time work began, in 1963. Happy days!
