Redfyre 17-12-2008, 16:08 I believe Guy Comport, a well-known local businessman (was he head of Green's?), lived there for many years. Mr Comport was a great supporter of the Ecclesfield Silver Prize Band, and some other organisations. Mr Comport was a great supporter of the Ecclesfield Silver Prize Band, and some other organisations. Douglas Guy Rae Comport was Managing Director of Green's. His wife was Queenie Marianne, and a french countess (yes really). The original name of the house was 'Dunedin'. At one time in the early days, Dr Sime, the village doctor, lived there. Kelly85 18-12-2008, 11:24 Was the house used as a surgery? I know that it was Dr Sime that had the house built for him and his wife, but i think his wife died shortly after the house was finished. Does anyone have any photo's of the house and what it was like? I have tried searching the internet but not had much luck. Nigel Womersle 22-12-2008, 16:12 Sorry, but I don't know the answer to that. My Grandmother sometimes went with Dr Sime, to a birth - when he thought he might need an extra pair of hands. I suppose it could have had rooms used as a surgery, as The Hallamshire House (135 Church Street) had them when Dr Smail lived in it. My parents used to speak about going to see him there. Of course all this was before the NHS, when everyone had to pay to see the Dr. My first memories of a surgery are when it was at 50 Church Street. A surgery upstairs and another downstairs. The one downstairs was always occupied by Dr Smail. The building was lit by gas, and if you so wished, your presription could be made up at the rear of the building. Miss Dronfield was in charge of that department. No making an appointment, causing you a two weeks wait to see the Dr in those days. You just went to the waiting room and took a mental image of who was there before you, and waited your turn. indicator 19-01-2009, 22:08 The Red House is No.79 Chapletown Rd. Its recently been spruced up a bit. |
