I offer a review of POP TARTS done by a friend of mine, herself a student, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to me she chose her words as follows....

"It was with strange anticipation of beered up male students yelling abuse at each other, and vomiting continuously in the toilets.....naturally, we were not disappointed, when entering the venue at 1130 we were faced with a wall of 1200 students all in a total state of complete inebriation, to the point of being "totally ******ed" I think the expression is....lovely. expecting nothing but "totally ******ed" chavvie male students and handbag waving girlies showing their knickers out the top (and bottom) of their faded denim 3" depth skirts

Groups of 20 pints of stella men leered at the "tottie" on the dancefloor, where handbag clad female students shook their booty to a diet of Kylie and Chesney hawks, interpersed with the odd Abba and Bee G's. It was impossible to navigate to any kind of space whereby you could avoid having lager slopped down your neck, or hit in the face with bottles of VK being shaken by cumbersome and restricted dancing attempts. My attenpt at a venture on the dancefloor was marred by a group of "******ed" sports club students chanting a football song at a crowd of female "totty"......half a pint of Stella slopped down my shoulder which was decidely warm, smelly and possibly past its best.

The bars were 10 rows deep all night, the female toilets were drenched in vomit of all colours and textures. The corridor between the 2 rooms was a never ending trail of staggering, vomiting students, several of whom collapsed midway to the toilet in a steaming pile of vomit, and two others had wet themselves and lay on the floor soaking up their own urine. And that was just the women!!!!!!! The men were so slaughtered and chav like they could not do anything but groan loudly and pass 'mating calls' to the opposite or same sex along the line sof "get em off you fat tart", or as I was treated to the verbal delight by one inebriated chav in a vomit stained white shirt, to "**** me I want to **** your ****** tits of you **** whore". I declined the attention of this intellectually barren gentlemen, who sported a leathered face, bright red and dripping with Stella, and who seemed unable to stop foaming at the mouth between slurping his Stella collection.

I would like to say it was a cultured, mellowed out and cool clubnight, but not able to do so. If this is where the happy people go, then they might perhaps try drinking less than 50 bottles of VK, or 20 pints of Stella: At least they might be able to navigate to the toilets and not projectile vomit across the floors and walls of the venues.......needless to say it was a fairly normal night for students....well 99% of students!!"

My comment is, well actually it was a refreshing change from the City centre (or is it?) but dont tell her that!!!!!

jeeze ... doesn't it sound totally and utterly revolting?

I suppose these are some of the same people that attack firemen after sending out a false alarm, caused fun occasions like the Pyjama Jump to be cancelled and couldn't be bothered with Rag Week .... the finest flower of our future .... :help:

You tell me a cheesy night out that isn't like that ;)
Also, a lot of people would've just finished exams, hence making the crowd of 1500 students even more inebriated...

A big thank you for reminding me why I don't go to the Students' Union - just as I was starting to feel I was missing out on something and was contemplating paying it another visit. Don't think I'll bother!.

It's true, cheesy student nights ming! Having said that, I don't think you can write of the whole union because of pop tarts. Nights like 'the Tuesday club' and 'Stuffed olives' are quality and have a much more interesting crowd that don't tend to distribute vomit all over the building.

I am reliably informed by my student friend that FRIDAY night disco in the Octagon is just as bad. But other nights do have a touch of class about them. Cant speak for the Tuesday club, but FUZZ club is generally fine, completely different breed of students who seem to have grasped the concept that guzzling 20 pints of Stella in 3 hours is not always the most intelligent way to experience a night club! Much better vibe.....

I suggest the makers of BOOZE BRITAIN show pay a visit to POP TARTS, they could certainly round up a motley crew of vomiting Stellaheads bragging about how many casks of ale they have put away in the last 7 days......

I actually thought WEST STREET was more refined than POP TARTS......even the rowdiest places seem calm in comparison. Geenrally in pubs or clubs even you dont get wall to wall vomiting? If there is one thing students get a first degree with honours in, its drinking!! I am sure they could outdrink even the most in-training, seasoned professional West street drinker!

Hear hear. TC and Fuzz club are where reasonable students go to get away from the drunken rabble!

And then when that becomes too much, we go to Offbeat to escape the rowdy Fuzzers

But where do you go from OFFBEAT to escape the noisy Off-beaters? Coffee Revolution?

Personally, I disagree on some points....

I think students HAVE changed. We used to go to the student union on a Friday night for years... and students (at least) knew how to be proper students then - DM's, baggy clothes, a bit scruffy, listening to The Cure and The Smiths etc...

You go now and you can't tell the difference between students and "townies"!! All perfectly groomed and polished and (as the person who was reviewing says) listening to Kylie and Chesney Hawkes!

Bring back "proper" students, that's what I say. To me, they've changed beyond all recognition and not for the better.

Hopefully it won't happen, otherwise I'd have to just cower in the corner :P

At Offbeat you have to queue up for half an hour before the start if you want to be sure of getting in, so the casual drunken student can't just wander in, spill beer and start fights
And people say that queues are only a bad thing...

Ive never personally liked offbeat, I only went once and I felt like I'd worn totally the wrong clothes and people were staring at me :(

BoroughGal you need a night out with us pet, we will show you what proper students are made of!

I assume at OFFBEAT it is devoid of short sleeved shirted chavs projectile vomiting their 20 pints of STella? No girlies in denim skirts, white high heeled shoes, knocking back the Smirnoff Ice and waving an ENORMOUS shiny white vinyl (fake leather) handbag? No chavs chanting "get your ***** out for the lads"?

SilentStatic

That's right - Offbeat is about the total opposite
Not on over the summer though, so I guess I'll have to put up with the w****** at Corp during the week instead.

I sort of agree with what you are saying. However, ion a night like poptarts its always been the same.

Tut Tut Tut Tut Tut.

FACT: I work at Sheffield Uni Students Union
FACT: YOU, Mr GOLDENFLEECE NO LONGER do, because....
FACT: You ceased to be the Pop Tarts DJ 7 years ago, therefore
FACT: Jealousy is a terrible thing
FACT: Pop Tarts has sold out EVERY WEEK (except 2) for 3.5 years
FACT: the review you submitted was for the last Pop Tarts after exams finished, when even students just might be a little bit tipsy.

Get over it, move on.....

Yeah - I'm going back further than Pop Tarts - but even then, things do keep getting worse and worse...

TUT TUT TUT

FACT..I left 8 years ago in 1997. I left working for the Union as I moved on to much bigger and better things at the Leadmill, and other clubs, plus did a lot of work abroad for a number of years. It was time for a change in September 1997 as I had been doing that event for three years and I wanted out... I quit POP TARTS in August 1997 of my own free will and was offered the Union Friday night Octagon event, then called SHACK. I turned that down as well as I had a better offer from a well known City Centre club . "Jealousy" has never been an issue. If you offered me £1000 PW to work that night I would laugh........outgrown the DJ thing now, easier ways to make money.

FACT: May I remind you that it was ME who launched the first ever POP TARTS in September 1994 in the days when it was NOT full of vomit clad chav students!! It is only, and I repeat ONLY thanks to my work over 3 years as DJ at the original Pop Tarts in association with the then entertainments Manager STeve Homer, that it became the legend that it is now!!!

FACT: The event changed its name from MRS T's BIG NIGHT OUT which was on Wednesdays, and took a big risk on running on Saturday nights, as the Union had not had a saturday night disco for many many years.

FACT: It was the ents Manager and myself who devised the music policy, and discussed the name POP TARTS in the late Summer of 1994 before it was launched officially. We agreed the winning formula would be merging the LOVE BUG 70's Union night with the MRS T's night, with 2 rooms, renaming the whole Saturday night POP TARTS. The original music playlists, (far superior to what is played now) was devised exclusively by me, and featured main list of 100 songs which were rotated weekly with a formula to keep the dancefloor packed at all times.

FACT: In 1994/5 students used to Q for tickets to POP TARTS on Sunday morns when they first went on sale 6 days ahead of the next event.

FACT, it is rarely SOLD OUT now before the end of the week, most of the time tickets are still available Saturday evenings.

FACT, students use to trade POP TARTS tickets in BAR one for up to £12 a head in 1994/5 when they had a cover price of £1.25. These days you can give them away......

FACT: Students have not Q'd to buy tickets a week in advance since 1995/6.

FACT....more people actually wanted to go to PT in 94/5/6 than they do now as they were desperate for tickets the moment they were made avilable, Noon on Sundays.

FACT: Point taken about the exam special pop tarts, I had not realized all the exams were over at that time, not being a student these days. However all reports of the event in the last few years have been dire, and not dis-similar to the event which I submitted a review on this forum.

FACT: The review was NOT written by me but by my student girlfriend, who had not been before, please get your facts right

Bleurgh - this took me right back to working at the union many many (many...) years ago.

They used to make us wear these tight little t-shirts saying "pop tarts" on them. It really wasn't the sort of night where you would want "tart" emblazoned across your chest. I can't even begin remember the number of blokes I had to threaten to clobber!

With hindsight, I wish I'd done a bit more clobberin'...

I was at Sheffield Uni from '99 until 2004 and used to love going to pop tarts on a saturday night. You had to have had a few drinks to enjoy it, but it was generally a fun atmosphere and an enjoyable part of the student experience. Yes there were some people that overdid the drinking, but it wasn't a huge vommit fest with people slurping beer all over each other.

To give an idea of the popularity of the night, it allways used to sell out a week in advance while I was a student. After a couple of years I had a good business going, buying up unwanted tickets and selling them on to people in Bar One that absolutely had to go to Pop Tarts at whatever cost. Some were happy to pay up to £20 for a ticket. Suffice to say my night out was usually paid for in its entirety by putting in a bit of work in Bar One earlier in the evening.

pretty poor tbh. rarely sells out, by the sounds of it much less wilder, mondays and wednesdays are more popular now.
