View Full Version : Dog games / recommendations of books
I’m looking for some new games ideas to play with my dog. :) He’s not retrieve orientated with balls (we are working on it) but happily plays for treats.
So far we play hide and seek (for food) around the house. Tap the cup; he has to find the treat under a choice of plastic cups by tapping his paw on it. Tug, and then the combination of sit/ lie/ paw/ high five/ come round/ stay/ heel, which he is pretty quick at now and getting a little bored as he’s not really having to think too much. I’ve been trying to teach him to roll over but he’s not convinced  plus he’s lab sized so not the most elegant for that type of trick
Has anyone read any good books/websites that they would recommend for games or tricks? He is useless outside due to dog aggression and has to stay on lead so I'm just trying to keep his mind busy.
Thanks
Emma_5207 17-12-2008, 12:19 ohhh you have given me some ideas for my 3 month old pup and I could so with some more too. I tought her to sit/lie/stay by the time she was 10 weeks, and she needs a lot more stimulation. She fetches and I have tried to play hide food for her to find which worked well. I taught her "paw/high 5" now everytime I ask her to sit she flings her paw at me!!!
I'll teach her the "come around" tonight.
I found this one which has some good ideas...

ThanksYou just said ALL the ones I was going to suggest!
Your dog sounds like Gadget - he doesn't really 'fetch' either
I have a hula hoop (un-used exercise fad!) that I taught him to jump through too... and weaving in between my legs.
I feel for you, Gadget would go crazy if he didn't get a massive run around to burn off all his energy every day! When he's been injured and kept onlead due to vets advice he's been really annoying in the house!
Like the idea of the hula hoop, will have to give that one a go :) He likes jumping up onto tree stumps outside when asked to so I'm sure he will get the hang of that one, will give me something to do over christmas!
Oh been trying to do walk backwards too, which he sometimes gets but more practise needed!

Another thumbs up for hoola hoops here - both spaniels can jump through them although I don't think they make they big enough for the DDB! :hihi: Have you tried teaching 'leave it' where they have to leave the food until you say it's ok for them to eat it? 2 of mine are hopeless at it (food mad!) but Barney can have food placed on his paws and he won't eat it :) You build it up bit by bit until you can have it on their paws and they wpn't touch it, starting from placing a little bit of food on the floor a little distance away from Damon.
Looking forward to seeing him again on friday, no doubt i'll probably see you again soon too!
We do the leave it with food, the only problem is if you say no he will not take any food off me or for the next few minutes even if I say it's ok  He's a bit sensitive with food; I think it may have been hit in the past if he went for food as if I say it no too loudly he'll hit the deck :( Shame it does not work when other other dogs are around :) I'll have to try the paw thing, sounds fun.
That would be one big hula hoop to fit the DDB through. Think I'm off to a trip to Toys r Us this weekend on a hula hoop mission.
I'm sure D will be looking forward to his walk on Friday, it's the only day he doesn't run around the house when I get in to try and hurry me up to take him out  So you must tire him out :) I've just got a new bike attachment thing so I don't have to hold the lead when cycling so he's getting a faster run out in the mornings so that should keep him fit! It's killing me though, I don't think my legs have woken up at that time.
mummysaz21 17-12-2008, 21:35 my lab does, kiss , hug, roll over, lay down, bed, crawl, and a game she likes it when out i make her sit at 1 side of the field i walk over to over leavign her there and just throw a treat, go back to her and tell her to find, keeps her entertained for ages and maybe on a training lead this wouls work for youxx
Well, got the paw trick down perfectly now and the stay for food infront of him is up to 4/5 mins now :)
The walking backwards is still in progress. Going to start doing them outside now in the garden then once we get the games right in the garden we will do it out on a field (bit tricky with the muzzle though!) My long training lead has just come through the post so we are well prepared for it and I will try the seeking game out.
Does anyone know were there is tennis courts that you can get onto and close yourself in? The ones in millhouse park would be great as I could train in there without his muzzle and keep him well away from other dogs. At dusk no-one is playing in the park anyway but they are always locked. I'm wondering if you can hire them out? The wee/ poo thing would not be a problem as he only goes when allowed to anyway.
Waiting for the rush around the sales to stop before I brave a shopping trip to toys r us to get the hula hoop.
Anyone got any more suggestions?
helenasq 31-12-2008, 14:45 Graves park have enclosed courts Evei, they used to have big holes in but walked past them earlier on this week and there is at leat one, fully secure court - shouldn't think there would be any one using them in this weather either
