I was just chatting to a friend of mine who is a pilot and he said that there is a startup company that is going to try to launch flights to london city airport from Sheffield City airport. I think would be a great idea, somthing that sheffield needs. Hope it does start. I'll try to find if the company has a website

I've not heard anything about this - I will keep my ears open!

We can offer a flight from Sheffield City to Battersea Heliport - flight time about one hour.

A specially commissioned report has just been presented to Sheffield City Coucil regarding the future of the airport. It made no mention of this. If you do find the website, please post the details on this thread.

....ish - plus VAT and landing fees!

Range depends on the number of passengers on board - and how much they weigh, baggage, and, therefore, the amount of fuel we can put on board, etc, etc. Max range probably 250 - 300 miles?

BA used to do flights from Sheffield City to London City, I think they were about £250 return, but they pulled then 3 or 4 years ago, presumably because there wasn't enough demand.

I used the KLM service to Amsterdam a few times. It was so convenient to be within ten minutes of the airport.

It's a sad loss that they feel another business park is more important than a fully fledged city airport.

Agreed!

I think I once read that Sheffield was Europe's largest city to _not_ have it's own airport (this was before the ill-fated City Airport opened I think..) - was the soundbite/piece of trivia true, or way off the mark? - I for one wouldn't be surprised if it was accurate *sigh* !

If you read the council report, the consultants seem to think Sheffield doesn't need an airport because of the new Doncaster airport and Manchester being within an hours drive. Rubbish!

A lot of people think we should keep a small inter-city airport, just like many smaller towns such as Leicester, Nottingham, Cambridge, etc. etc.

The Sheffield-London City route was an idea ahead of its time, as although it was quick, the route into London proper from City airport took you at least another hour. I think now there is a light rail link about to open, also the Docklands area is far more developed, increasing the chances of businessmen needing to travel there.

Helicopters are good but they will always be more expensive than fixed-wing planes.

You would think if it was run correctly a place the size of sheffield would be able to support a few business flights to major cities. There are a lot smaller cities that run things like this.
