Well, apart from an easily maintained garden - what do you want from the space? Have you got kids who need room to run around? Are you interested in watching the wildlife? Do you want to grow things to eat...?

Winter is a great time for planning a garden and getting started on it in spring

Very true - you need to work out how you're going to use the garden, before you can plan it!

Libraries usually have a good selection of gardening books - or the cheap, discount bookshops - get yourself some about planning your garden and see what you can do. If it's nice and big, you'll be able to have several gardens by dividing it up, and remember that a "wildnerness (http://www.bbc.co.uk/wildaboutyourgarden/)" area is low maintenance and great for wildlife!

Hire a garden designer and tell them to landscape it so it is as easy as possible not to manage, or dig up what is there, and gravel it, apart from a shrub in the middle.

Yes the garden is quite big, I havent got children but am wanting them in the future. I like the idea of dividing the garden up and having lots of little gardens. I willget some magazines. Thank you for you help!

So long as you don't concrete or deck huge areas, then most garden plans can be easily reversed if you change your mind about what you want.

The wilderness area is always my favourite bit - and Dozy is right - very low maintainance. The BBC Gardening site has tons of info on it - a great place to start http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/

I am a landscaper and also currently doing a garden design qualification. I would be happy to come and have a look and a chat with you. Sounds like you want to do it yourself but happy to chat about ideas, no costs, just interest.
