From the Star (http://www.thestar.co.uk/headlines/Major-plan-on-derelict-land.4790741.jp)

Given the current climate, this may be take a little while to come to fruition, but it should make a bit more of the area and provide some nice homes in the area?

The houses are to be between the Don and Weedon Street - it looks very near the river to me. I wouldn't be keen on living there.

Personally I'd hate having Meadowhall for my local shops. It sounds like a horrible corporate nightmare.

That and the flood issue aside, I think it's better to build on old industrial land with reasonable access to other places than it is to build on some fields away from anywhere.

Any new houses built on the site will have to be set 500-600mm above a known flood level to try and prevent flooding happening in the future. Given the recent flooding event the planners will set the minumum floor levels at a height of 600mm above the 2007 flood level. This will prevent any future flooding of the site. As the recent event was a 1 in 200 year storm we are unlikely to see another in a long while.

Flooding is the least of that areas problems. Trying to convince people to move so close to Meadowhall will be a bigger issue.

I never understand why houses built in a flood risk area aren't just build with the ground floor as garage and storage....it can flood as often as it likes and no real damage done if its build from concrete. Even the services can be protected from the water I'm sure.

They can but people dont like flooding anywhere in their house hence they raise the entire site.
