View Full Version : I'm bored should be divided in to two sections
I propose splitting word games from the I am bored section.
People have often complained about threads being relegated to I am bored where it vanishes hidden beneath all the word games.
I suggest creating a new section for word games, so the I am bored section can become a decent place to participate in jokey threads and having threads moved to the section would no longer seem like relegation, so much as the appropriate place.
I think the proposal would improve and lighten the forum up a bit.
What do others think?
I agree that the 'I'm Bored' section should be restored to its status as an appropriate repository for the more jokey, light-hearted threads. Although the games are perfectly fine, the 'I'm Bored' section does now appear to be associated in many folks' minds almost exclusively with word games and the relatively small number of forumers who participate.
The lighthearted threads which inevitably get banished there soon disappear under the games and frankly it's rather disheartening. Splitting I'm bored would solve this.
I'll vote for this too - I don't do the games threads, but I miss a well functioning lighthearted section to the forum, and don't like junk pervading the general section
Just to reiterate how useful a division of the 'I'm Bored' section would be.
Funny, interesting, quirky little threads posted elsewhere on the forum are moved to the 'I'm Bored' section which previously was the perfect repository, clearing the General section for rather more weighty subjects.
The continued popularity of the games within the 'I'm Bored' section, and the frequency with which they're updated, has meant that non-gaming threads are rapidly swamped, or lost entirely for those who've chosen to remove the section from the list they monitor when viewing new posts.
The games are perfectly fine, but perhaps would be better served in their own 'I'm Bored' gaming sub-section, one which those who choose not to participate could ignore while retaining easy viewing of those trivial threads shunted from elsewhere on the forum.
EdnaKrabappe 24-05-2009, 12:30 I'm completely with you Hecate on this one. And sorry Wildcat and it seems everyone else when i've read this post.
I'm bored and fun and games I believe it used to be.
There are a lot of games on there that are played by just a few users (but who enjoy them and play them heavily so fair play to them.) But I'll be honest, change a letter in a five letter word or say a boy's name is never going to interest that many.
It does swamp out the, did you see this daft thing? type of post which more users might be interested in and I do fear that a lot of this type of post, which creates camaradrie on the forum, is now posted on facebook and has lost a great deal of the forum's fun side.I did start a thread re this a while back (What should be in general discussions and what should be in I'm bored) but I got shot down a bit. However my opinion on that still stands that I like the 'did you see this daft thing ?' post and feel it should be truly in i'm bored as then general discussions can remain more serious and entice those back to the forum who feel it's lost its focus.
The repeated inanity of the 'next letter' and 'hilarious story' threads are unbelievably dull.
Give MR BENN a section all to himself.:hihi::thumbsup:
I think it should be left just as it is, and judging from the feedback on here from a total of 7 posters in as many months, then this shows how popular this suggestion has been.

If it was to be divided into two section - one for the games threads and one for the jokey banter threads - it would hardly bother you as an active contributor the 'I'm Bored' section; you'd carry on playing the games and chatting in the banter threads as usual.
It might be useful for those who are bothered by the banter threads littering the 'General Chat' section, or who wish to contribute to the banter threads while ignoring the many games threads to which only a very few people contribute.
As it is, I've taken the 'I'm Bored' section of the list of sections I monitor in 'View New Posts'. It means I miss a few potentially amusing threads which get moved to that section, but at least I don't have a cluttering of games threads obscuring the threads I'm interested in.
the_rudeboy 23-07-2009, 12:04 I very rarely even look in 'I'm bored' these days because it's just a mass of various word games. I think a split would be good.

Your comments seem to be in favour of the proposal.

Same here, just too much of a pain in the arse to fine anything them daft pointless word games.
the only reason the lighthearted joke threads vanish down the pages of the "im bored " section is because very few people post on them . the word games are vastly more popular-hence them swamping the other threads.
its no different to any other section on the forum ,the popular threads will remain at the top of the first page .

by the word game threads being at the top of the page means they are posted on vastly more than the odd joke story that appears ,so obviously more popular .
Daily ,you see a joke story appear ,but vanish because no one posts on it -if they did it would remain near the top of page .

Daily ,you see a joke story appear ,but vanish because no one posts on it -if they did it would remain near the top of page .Just because they have more posts it doesn't mean they are more popular. Popularity isn't just based on how many posts there are on a thread, multiple postings by a few doesn't mean a thread is more popular than another thread with individual posts by many. People aren't going to post several times on a joke thread are they? Many might only view and not even post at all.
But you're bound to be in favour of the word games cos they get your post count up don't they? ;)

They are! i'd left you out in my original post and so was apologising for that but I'd not made myself very clear... Yes I agree with your proposal. ;-)

The point is that the frequency with which the very many games threads are updated keeps them not only at the the top of the 'I'm Bored' section, but has them swamping the 'View New Posts' pages.
Consequently folk abandon the 'I'm Bored' section, either by stopping visiting it, or by taking it off the list of forums monitored and thus seen when they click on the 'View New Posts' link.
The effect is two-fold: folk post jokey banter threads in the General Chat section, when they were formerly more appropriately located in 'I'm Bored', and those threads are lost to many when they're subsequently shunted by the mods into 'I'm Bored'.
The games are fine for those who want to play them. I'm not criticising the games, those who play them or the frequency with which they do so. I'm suggesting that the forum's activity has changed in the 'I'm Bored' section over the last several months such that those threads could be handled more appropriately.
The I'm Bored section used to be a more eclectic mix of posts. Word games, funny youtube clips, light hearted jokey threads and those games that Dude111 used to post that helped pass the time, penguin throwing games or hamster splatting things.
Now it seems solely the preserve of word games, a-z games and the like which, if you are not particularly into word games, means finding anything of interest unlikely. Any fun and amusing threads that start in General and are then moved to I'm bored quickly drop of the page due to frequency in which the word games are played.
As others have said the frequency with which the word games are played also clogs up the "view new posts" feature which some people use as their primary way of keeping up new happenings on the forum.
Maybe the word games should just be on a different forum :hihi:
Alcoblog's thread on sending a washing machine to the moon was a fun thread i was enjoying reading in general for the last few days. It has been kicked in to I'm bored and within a few hours was relegated to page 2, swamped by those word 'games' where no one will find it or notice if it gets updated, because it will soon be back on page 2 again within an hour of it being posted on.
In my view it is the main flaw with the forum that there is no exclusive space for jokey friendly threads that can really cheer people up.

Here is a thread I started on this a while ago. Mixed opinions. I'll be honest, as a user I don't have it in my search new posts anymore for the reasons said and just view it as an assistant moderator. It used to be my favourite section of the forum and I think the forum lost a lot of its camaradrie when it became just a word game section with the occasional gem.
rubydazzler 03-09-2009, 08:14 I agree. Put the word games and suchlike into their own sub-forum. They're not used by many people and they do tend to swamp the fun threads that get posted. To answer jongo and Mr Benn, imo, the reason the jokey type threads don't get posted on so much is that they disappear before most of us have the chance to even see them.
When you're at work or out of an evening, you just miss things. Making them their own section would help with that.
MC Spyda 03-09-2009, 09:51 Delete it all together.
rubydazzler 03-09-2009, 19:33 Delete it all together. That's a bit harsh! They do serve a purpose. On an MSN site I used to manage, we used to post 'growing gifts' that you had to visit everyday to make them grow into whatever. It was a device to get people calling in and posting something. I think the word games and such are the same sort of thing. It makes the forum look busy.
Delete it all together.
thanks for that contribution :huh::huh:
How about the ability to hide threads, like you can hide a members post? that way the word games wont show as new posts appear

You can hide sections from appearing when you are searching using the "View New Posts" function

but not individual threads. For instance I could exclude the "I'm bored" section as a whole but not just the threads I wasn't interested in

Which is why splitting the 'I'm Bored' section would be a top idea. It would allow folk to hide the subsection containing the word games, and view the subsection containing the jokey threads. Or vice versa. Or hide both. Or neither.
Any official feedback from admin on this idea?
splodgeyAl 04-09-2009, 11:15 I totally agree with the majority on this thread. The forum has lost it's fun side recently, and I'm sure, as others have said, one of the reasons is that the non-word game light hearted threads disappear far too quickly.
I also no longer show I'm Bored threads on View New Posts, cos I'm not so bored I want to join in the word games
I also agree that the word games should have their own sub forum. Nobody is rubbishing these threads, they are great for those who enjoy them.
But I love the threads such as Alcoblog starts and it's a shame they get buried so quickly.
Or perhaps the answer might be to leave the word games in 'Im bored' and create a new sub forum for fun threads? I don't think you have to be bored to like a bit of light hearted banter.
Why not split the General Discussion section and then threads like "What I have eaten today" where no-one actually discusses anything can be put in its own section
Come to think of it, why is it in GD ? :D
Edit: Thinking even more, why not fragment the GD section into
Religion
Politics
Racism
Foreigners
Asylum Seekers
What have I eaten today
and
Anything else :D

Although I agree that the majority of threads on I'm Bored are very much a sameness, I dont see any difference than the same old boring going round in circles of the BNP, Religous, Politics threads by the same old people on GD.
Alcoblog 09-09-2009, 11:38 I love making threads on the forum and put a lot of work into it. However I can't post on general anymore as they just get removed .. for some reason leaving more space for more important things like BNP and rascism (cynical) ..Theres a lot of interaction on threads I make and I hope it puts a smile on peoples faces. However I and many others just get swamped with 'A to Z' cr*p... There's no way I can use the 'I'm bored' section so am effectively banned from SF

It's not the topic, or whether or not you're interested in it; it's the frequency with which the game threads are updated.
Have a look in 'I'm Bored' now. All the threads on the front page are games, and almost all updated by the same person in the last half an hour or so.
For those who monitor the 'I'm Bored' section when they view new posts - because they want to keep an eye out for the light-hearted banter threads moved there from other sections of the forum, for example - all those rapidly-updated games littering the screen are a pain in the arse.
The first page of 'General Discussions' currently has threads about diets, illness, file-sharing, tattoos, travel, fashion... less than a fifth are concerned with the subjects you mention.
A suggestion: either stop moving the banter threads to the place that's traditionally been their home and acknowledge that some folk will be peeved by 'General Discussions' becoming a repository for chatty silliness, or divide the 'I'm Bored' section such that it can return to serving folk other than the game players.
By the way, the 'Everything you've eaten today' thread seems mostly to be to do with folk monitoring what they're eating as a sort of diet resource, rather than mindlessly listing food items. The 'What's the last thing you ate' thread seems to be less useful, and as such is in 'I'm Bored'.
I'm still not sure why you're bothered by the idea of splitting the section. As I mentioned above, it would make little practical difference to you, and would be useful for many other forummers.

By the same token as what you have said, why is it such a big deal to divide the I'm Bored, why cant you just skip the dross and go straight to page two, its hardly nuclear physics is it ?

For those who use the 'view new posts' link to monitor the forum, the rapidly updated games threads tend to swamp the others, making the feature less useful at best and irritating at worst.
A division of the 'I'm Bored' section would allow some folk to ignore the games section, while continuing to monitor the section containing the threads they are interested in (the banter/jokey/other threads currently shunted into the 'I'm Bored' section).
Why are you continuing to oppose the idea when it would make little difference to how you use the section? You'd carry on viewing/monitoring the games threads as usual, and those who want to could ignore them.

I just think some people are just being picky about irrelevant things on here, There are numerous threads on every section that I dont want to read but I dont complain about it, I just look for any that I am interested in and read them
Not too much trouble for me. :)
Just as a ps, they dont always shunt them into I'm Bored, I had a bit of a jokey thread about having crabs and what I could do with them and the mods re-titled it and banished it into the Cookery Section :loopy: Hows that for good moderating ? :hihi:

I'm bored is fine as it is IMO
although I do like the silly jokey threads I think they would be better in their own sub section of general discussions....perhaps an 'alternative discussion' section where we can put on silly or funny threads....ie the crab thread which was very popular, but who would see it in the foody section
all the serious stuff like religion, politics etc would still be in the general discussion section, I bet I know which would be more popular......
and then the bored section would just be for games and word association stuff...sorted

Which is what everyone is saying. Lets have one section for people who want to list every town ending in ham, even though they've already named them all, and another section for people who want to talk about skydiving gerbils. At the moment all the vaguely amusing threads that lighten peoples' lives are being suffocated under a mountain of posts detailing what Mr Benn has been doing at 3am (I've just been to the toilet, I've just sat down, I've not bought anything recently, I've not eaten lately)
p.s originally the a-z games and suchlike were for people to post in turn - there really is no point just spending all night replying to yourself.

You just seem to want nothing to change and sod those that do. I just can't fathom out your opposition to something that would have no impact on you whatsoever...so the only reason you continue to argue against the suggestion must be because....why? Why don't you want it divided into two sections? What possible reason could you have?
what is the point of having a seperate setion for a few joke threads that may have a dozen posts added to them in six months :huh:
its just taking up bandwidth and a waste of time .
the word game threads aree very popular with the posters that use them ,and are never sat dormant for days on end waiting for the odd post being added .
the_rudeboy 09-09-2009, 23:21 I use another forum now to read jokes and funnies cos i just can't be bothered to wade through all the word games in 'Im bored' to try to find the jokes. I don't post jokes anymore cos it seems a waste of time as they're swamped within minutes.

If you spend a little more time reading what I have wrote instead of just blatantly trolling people you will see that I have stated that I think they should split the General Discussion section into sub sections, but for some reason you cant see that in my posts, but when someone else says the same thing, you see it. The essential point is that distinct sections for the jokey/chatty/banter/silly threads and the games threads would be useful. Whether that's accomplished by splitting the 'I'm Bored' section, or by splitting the 'General Discussion' section isn't the issue; it would achieve the same thing: the ability to ignore the section containing the games, and the creation of a section where jokey/banter/chatty/silly threads would have a proper home again for their creation and where they could be moved to, without a)getting lost amidst the games threads, and b)littering a section that's traditionally been a debating area, an area for asking questions, or for more serious-themed general discussion.
You supported a division of one section, when you apparently thought the presence of certain threads (in this case, the religious-themed threads) were contaminating your forum experience. That's exactly what some folk feel about the jokes threads. Whether or not either group is 'right' is a different matter, and one which will presumably be decided by no one other than Geoff (is he still around?) and/or the admin.
Taxman quoted Shaznay in bold because her response essentially agrees with previous posts which have advocated a distinct forum section for the games threads.

Have you read the posts on this thread? The point of having a separate section has been made repeatedly, and the fact that the games threads are so popular has been a major part of that point.
The chatty/jokey/banter/silly threads are also very popular... until they're moved to what was once their correct place on the forum, where they're quickly swallowed up by the games threads.
I refer to the various threads as "fun threads" and the "grown up" threads. I tend to stick with the fun threads and just venture onto the grown up ones if it's a subject or topic that I definitely do know something about.

Off course he hasn't, you may as well ask that question of every thread that he parachutes into to add his pennethworth. And as for wasting bandwidth - well

So now it's been pointed out to you that you're happy for a section of the forum to be split along the lines of something you're happy with, you're happy to support the notion that a forum section should be split in another way which could make the forum experience more useful for others? Good stuff!

It's been stated repeatedly how it would make a difference: the forum gives folk the option to monitor/ignore the sections of the forum of their choice. A new subdivision would give folk the opportunity to ignore a large group of threads while continuing to view the threads they are interested in.
For those who choose to play the games, they would continue to do so. Either by continuing to directly view that section, or by selecting the appropriate sections in the list of sections they monitor.
If you spend a little more time reading what I have wrote instead of just blatantly trolling people you will see that I have stated that I think they should split the General Discussion section into sub sections, but for some reason you cant see that in my posts, but when someone else says the same thing, you see it. So, I ask you again, how will it not affect me and the way I use the forum, how do I use the forum, and why, by doing this would it make so much impact to your life?

It won't affect you because you will still be able to play your games to your heart's content.
It will make a positive difference to those who wish to use the "view new posts" function in order to look at fun and amusing threads without having to wade through endless word games.
As has been pointed out, it will make a difference to some people. I fail to see why you are so opposed to it? What will you lose by splitting the I'm bored section into two subgroups, one for word games and one for lighthearted threads. Why are you getting so upset about it?
Thank you for the input everyone, we'll take it under advisment.
