Hi people,
I just wanted to know, Is there many other people on here who use a wheelchair?

If so state if it is NHS or private.

The reason for me asking is that I use a NHS wheelchair and find that they are amazingly boring so I'm modifing it.

I have searched the internet and have found no-one else who has thought of adding lighting kits to it (neons etc)

I know of at least one wheelchair user on the forum. Have you missed reading all about her recent single-handed, sit-down protest with the First bus company?

Step forward Plain Talker.........!

Hi Mainframe,

I don't always use it, but I have one at home because with my disability I don't know how I'll be from one day to another.

It's NHS. I don't use it enough to modify it though, I generally try to stick to crutches if I can! I sometimes push myself a bit too much but I tend to try and keep out of it as much as possible!

I'm generally better now and my mobility has improved from what it was. I have Klippel Trenaunay it's very complicated trying to explain it but if you want to take a look it's here (http://the-lottie-story.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk)

Hi Mainframe, and a belated welcome to the Forum.

The thread that Redrobbo is referring to is here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42049), and is well worth a read.

As for trying to customise a NHS wheelchair, I think you should check with whoever supplied the wheelchair to you, because, when I had a buggy for my son from the NHS Wheelchair Service, one of the conditions was that there should be no customisation of the buggy/chair. I think the reason for this is that certain customising can unbalance the chair, and possibly make it unsafe.

Well Clarke & Partners who fix wheelchair for the NHS said that its ok as long as all the lights have a seperate power supply.

Also the NHS told me this aswell after threatening to take it off me for not doing so, but they are now.

No-one has complained since as its all cable tied and comes off easily. When it last went in Clarke & Partners also tided the cables

Lottie, my younger brother (he is 18) has KT. You are the first person I have ever come across other than him who has it.

I have had a read of your website and I applaud your honesty about your condition and the problems you have had.

My brother is very lucky that his Klippel Trenaunay is much milder than yours.

At birth it was, like you, assumed he had a birthmark. His KT is confined to his right leg. At one point health staff tried to get social services to remove him from my parent because they had negligently failed to note his "birthmark" and thought he had been abused.

He was not diagnosed with KT until he was about 13, after an incident involving rugby, a studded boot, a lot of blood and a very worried PE teacher!!

Now, his leg is much thicker than the other and he wears an insole because of a slight length difference.

He is very lucky that besides his insole and having to be careful if he bangs or cuts his leg, he has no other difficulties and has had no other treatment.

Because of him though, I can only begin to imagine what it is like for you having a more severe case, and I wish you all the best for the future.

 :headbang:

(Sorry for the off wheelchair topic essay!)

There are a few w/chair modding pages on the net such as

http://ledlights.home.att.net/how.htm

have a look at the 'gay pride' LED lites - looks more like something of close encounters of 3rd kind 2 me :P

and there is a page here also
