Work on the next important phase of Sheffield's Heart of the City project will commence next Monday (10 November).
Work will begin on demolition and drainage work to allow the construction of the Millennium Square that will link the Peace Gardens with the Winter Garden.
The Millennium Square has been designed by architects Allies and Morrison and will become a distinctive new public space in the city centre with hotel bars, cafes and shops at ground floor level and an entrance to the Winter Garden as well as to the existing Novotel.
It will eventually link to the proposed St Paul's Square and form part of the larger St Paul's Place development with offices, apartments and a multi-storey car park over shops and cafes on the Heart of the City site.
At night a magical sparkle will be provided by hundreds of tiny lights set into the paving and there will be a public exhibition of the detailed design when it is available.
The Square is being funded by the Millennium Commission and by the Council's partners CTP St James Developments.
Councillor Jan Wilson, Leader of the City Council welcomed the next phase of the project: "This is another crucial part of the Heart of the City project and will draw together two gems in the city centre - the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden. As the scheme develops, we will see how the Heart of the City is coming together to form a centre we can all be proud of. I look forward to seeing suggested designs for the Square and will be at any public exhibition to hear what people think before the design is finalised".
