I am a full-time mature student with a part-time job and wondered where I stand with council tax. I'm thinking about moving into a houseshare with one other tenant who isn't a student, so does that mean she'd have to pay my half? I think it's band C :help:

Hi I use to be a council tax officer ....if you are full time then you wouldnt be liable for any of the council tax and your freind would get a 25% single person discount that is it. Unless the house is HMO (house of multiple occupation) which means the landlord is liable for the tax...this depends if you each have your own room and share the kitchen etc....
But yes your friend would pay the full 75% and you wouldnt pay anything. Pretty unfair system if you ask me, Hope this helps.

Wrong! Stop lying to people. Good job you *used* to be a council tax officer, if you were still one I'd be leaping on your supervisor insisting you be disciplied and sent for forcible re-education.

Students are not counted in the arithmetic that is used to calculate the council tax of a property. FULL STOP. That is ***ALL***. Nothing Else.

It is ****ENTIRELY**** up to the occupiers of a property how they apportion any council tax liability that may arise. If those occupiers chose to split it between themselves, that is entirely their decision. If one occupier choses to pay the entire bill, again, that is their decision.

"Students don't pay council tax" is a a blantant and deliberately misleading lie.

*SOME* students do not pay council tax in just the same way that some non-students do not pay council tax.

What the duck is your problem!!! I answered the question which was if I move in with a student how much council tax would need to be paid???? and the answer is, if 2 people live in a prop (1 been student 1 not) then the student is disregarded and the person left will get 25% discount ...it is that simple. And please learn how to spell (Discipline) you retard. Yes you are right if the tenants/owners come to there own arrangement then yes they can pay how they want. So stop chatting pure ****. IF YOU ARE A FULL TIME STUDENT THEN YOU DO NOT PAY COUNCIL TAX PROVE ME WRONG RETARD

If you're going to criticise someone's spelling I suggest you put your own house in order, my bold. Oh, and please refrain from insulting a revered member of our forum.

Copied and pasted on here for you to soak up:

If a resident is a full time student and is in the same liability category as another resident who is not a full time student, the student is not jointly liable to pay Council Tax.

If there is only one non-student in the household, the person liable to pay Council Tax may be entitled to a discount - see student discount.

Because I thought a friendly warning may be more appropriate rather than an official one. We prefer our members not to call each other names.

I also think jgh was out of order calling you a liar, I apologise for missing that.

Now, if the two of you want to be nice to each other you will hear no more from me.
