I want to buy my husband a road bike for Christmas - if I buy from somewhere like Halfords they say it comes boxed up and would need assembling. Can anyone tell me how tricky this is? They also offer to build the bike for you, but I'm not sure if I could fit an assembled bike in the back of the car, and there's no way I'm trying to ride it home? Any advice please?
You haven`t said how big your car is !! If I take off the wheels (very quick and easy if the bike has quick release)I can fit my bike in the back of our Fabia.
Assembling a boxed bike isn`t hard if you know what you are doing.
Thanks for your advice - the car is a Skoda Octavia!
I'd be tempted to go to either of the JE James branches (Rotherham/Sheff) because they prep the bike for you.
Just take the wheels off and its about as small as it will go.

Depending on how much you want to spend - I would recommend Decathalon for bikes ...... they've been tremendous with mine.
It came assembled and set up for me - might be worth you buying a bike rack to go with it?????
Would also say JE James are better, although personally would use their Rotherham/Chesterfield branches over the Sheffield one from personal experience.

I would personally go to Butterworth's on Catch Bar Lane rather than a generic Halfords. Knowledgable advice, and it'll all come prepared and built. You'll get far more personal care and better aftersales, as I've found with general bits and bobs...
Good luck!

I'd second that. We bought my oh's bike from there and he recommended the exact same bike I'd suggested. The man's a genius.
