View Full Version : Is it about time SF got a facelift
liam1412 09-12-2008, 02:15 I have been using SF for a year or two now and I do like the simplicity of the site. But is it time for SF to take the site to the next level. There are loads of mods for available for vbulletin such as member blogs etc. Do you think SF is good as it is or would a new angle keep your interest in the site alive.

Sometimes progress makes things more complicated. Look at Facebook - they've carved that up all over the place and I for one don't like it much. I know progress is good and it's all about moving with the times - but sometimes it's a case of "don't fix what isn't broken".
Weblogs are pretty groovy things to have, I do one on another site - but really, blogging is not a big new thing although I'd imagine people would use it.....could be a tweakable thing - who knows :)
I like SF's simplicity (but miss the days when alternate posts were shaded so it was easier on the eyes)
I agree with Dynamick - if you want blogs etc, use those already widely available. Adding such a facility here would only encourage further spoof personalities, and gawd knows we have enough of those already
I think that you could have a larger message box capacity like i do on the rabbit rehome forum , I think i can have 100 there and 50 on another.
jfish1936 09-12-2008, 06:03 I like it as is. There's another forum which has all sorts of clever stuff - so clever I can only click the "new posts" button and read those -- the rest of the site is too difficult!
SF forum is dated. Not being able to add photos and YouTube links to posts is a bit of a bummer and the size of the avatars :gag:
salmonbones 09-12-2008, 15:01 It works, and its simple - Not everyone has the same skills, the simpler it is, the more accessable it is for members who are not so good with a computer.

Not being able to add photos and YouTube links to posts is a bit of a bummer and the size of the avatars :gag:Fora which are full of pics and You Tube films are very difficult to read. If a You Tube link is worth looking at the poster can tell us why and all it needs is a link. I've been on others which are full of flashing lights and fancy graphics. It's the contents of the posts that count on a forum and the simpler the presentation, the better.
Search option is rubbish and message box needs to be bigger here.
I'm particularly against the idea of pics, vids and animations running on every page (the ads are annoying enough) as they take an inordinate length of time to load
If you're frequenting forums such as those catering for the gaming community, it's a given that you are running a computer able to cope with such a load, but there are a number of members here who are running a machine which is already struggling to keep up with current loads. I don't see why those users should be disadvantaged for the sake of knobs and whistles which don't add to the forum mission of 'a resource for Sheffield'
If we're going to have such graphics postable in posts, perhaps a 'sheffield images' forum would be appropriate, or subsections within 'history and expats' and 'sheffield discussions', so every thread doesn't become unreadable on a slower computer
"If it aint broke dont fix it"
jfish1936 10-12-2008, 09:03 This is a new high end machine.
I have a fast broadband link
I still find myself waiting for SF items to come up on screen.
If everybody can load up YouTubes, big pictures and so on, I might just stop bothering to look.

Eh? :suspect:
Youtube links etc aren't very 56k friendly, you see not everyone online is on Broadband, especially the older generation.

That's very true Rich - but I'm more inclined to say this forum doesn't need any jazzing up, it's pretty groovy as it is and a lot of people on here are happy as it is - I'd leave it alone, with your reason being a valid one not to change :)
