Hi I have a touch lamp at the side of my sofa, it has 4 settings touch 1 (low) touch 2 (medium) touch 3 (high) touch 4 (off)....last night the bulb went so I have been to the shops today and bought a replacement bulb!

But now the light has lost all of it's 'touch' settings and just comes on and off when plugged and unplugged!!

This is a real inconvenience as it actually plugs in behind the sofa so now I will have to move the sofa everytime I want it on...plus it's coming on at the brightest setting which is ok for reading but a bit too bright if relaxing etc

Does anyone know what could've gone wrong and whether it can be easily repaired????

From my own experience, like any appliance they wear out after a while and in the case of touch lamps lose their sensitivity (i.e. just become an on/off lamp).

When this happened to ours we just had to replace it, nothing else we could do.

Shiesh, I think the time has come for you to farewell your lamp and make your way down to Argos :)

Have you tried hitting it? :hihi:

My folks have had the same thing and did what LisaO recommended.

But it's only 6 mths old and it was working perfectly well before the bulb blew...I think that must've caused the problem...I would take it back to the shop but I got it from Allders which now no longer exists...it wasn't cheap either!!

:(

Thought an electrician might know what the prob could be...here's hoping!

Is there a manufacturer on there?

If so, contact them

Hi thanks Strix it does say Luminaire(UK) so it's a start!!

I bet it is something simple - I'll call them see what they say!!

Called them very unhelpful....but I googled a search and came across this (http://www.letsfixit.co.uk/html/lamps_faq.html) ...I have successfully taken the lamp to pieces and located the Thyristor which is a BTB04 600SL but I don't know where to buy one from (ebay have some for 99p for 10 or 20...I only want one!!) and I don't have a soldering kit or any soldering experience....

therefore if anyone out there wants to help by popping over and soldering this for me and happens to have one of these little things in their toolbag I would love to hear from you!!

Otherwise I will have to shop for a soldering set and have a crash course in soldering next week!!

:P

Same thing happened to my touch lamp. As soon as I had to replace the bulb the touch function ceased to work. I solved the problem by cutting the wire in half and then reconnecting both ends to a switch (available from Wilkinsons). If you can wire a plug you can do one of these. Good luck.

Try Maplin in town or Bardwell.

I wouldn't advise anyone without experience doing repairs on a mains driven piece of kit. I've been tinkering with amateur radio gear for almost 30 years and I still take incredible care about fixing mains kit. The other thing I'd say is that thyristors and triacs are usually pretty reliable in kit; for one to fail something else may have gone pear shaped in there as well - I'd be very careful.

Dumb question - you're not replacing the bulb with one of these low power dooberries that look like a flourescent tube are you?
