Hi wondering if anyone can help me, I need a programme that can convert the bit rate and adjust the sound level of my music files WITHOUT copying them. I know roxio used to have an option in there media player that would allow you to adjust the bit rate and volume level of audio files. However it would copy the file, thus giving two files of the same name and type.

Having over 30gig of music on my hard drive I really don't want it all copying and effectivly doubling up and giving me 60gig.

MP3Gain (http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/) is good for volume normalisation, plus it's reversible so you can undo your changes (saves undo data to a tag).

By default it does the changes "in place", so you don't end up with two copies of the file.

I know that, roxio re-encodes mp3's, however it creates a second file, so you wind up with two copies of the same file which is not what I want.

Why can you not just delete the first copy?
Personally, I'd just re-encode at the desired rate from the source - an encoded, de-encoded, re-encoded track is going to lose something over a straight encoded one.

The iPod does it its self go into the settings and turn "Sound Check" on, this will auto level all the volumes of your mp3's.
