Ousetunes 03-06-2005, 10:01 Why not do what I do? Subscribe to Runners World magazine (it's only £7.50 per quarter, that's three issues) and you get tons of advice. I promise it will get you out running. You also get, as a subscriber, free access to their website which contains loads of advice specifically aimed at the beginner. You can choose a programme to get you out running the miles. You can aim for a particular race somewhere in the future (say a 5k in August). You can take it, literally, at your own pace. Choose the correct shoes, join forums with other new and established runners. It's totally inspiring as opposed to being daunting. I only signed up last month and managed 60 miles in May. (I did run before as a 17 year-old mind.) You'll lose weight, feel great and it won't cost you the earth either. PM me for more details on how to subscribe. Right, I'm off on another couple of miles now..., willman 03-06-2005, 10:08 where are you based, we have Killamarsh Kestrels who run regularly, some are mad keen marathon runners others are just joe public(more josie public actually at the moment).apparently it's quite enjoyable & friendly & you run at your pace with support from other team members. mr.blaze 03-06-2005, 10:19 There is a social running club who run to the Sportsman at Lodge Moor. Can't tell you any more than that I'm afraid. beth29 03-06-2005, 10:48 I am from Chapeltown Sheffield. I would like to join, but what if I couldnt complete the run or whatever!!! ??? Jayne 03-06-2005, 10:56 What sort of speed are you after. I've started running with Hallamshire Harriers on a Thursday night from Hillsborough Park. We run for about 1h15. Really nice runs. I do 10k in 52 mins and there's a few people a bit faster and a couple about the same - they wouldn't leave anyone behind though. Ousetunes 03-06-2005, 11:35 Originally posted by beth29 I am from Chapeltown Sheffield. I would like to join, but what if I couldnt complete the run or whatever!!! ??? No serious running club is going to treat you in that way! You wouldn't get lumped in with the sub 4.30 marathoners just like you wouldn't expect to race against Michael Schumacher if you were to join a motor racing club. Any club will take you on and introduce you to a programme designed for a variety of reasons. Have you run before? Have you any medical problems? Hereditory problems? What are your aims (in regards mental and physical targets: lose weight, to run a marathon, to be able to run for 5 minutes?). The wrong advice or worse, over-training in the early days could lead to serious injury. You'll be given the right advice from the people who know. If everyone had the same fears as you do - no insult intended! -then nobody would have the nerves to join ANY club! Go for it. You've got nothing to lose! donniedarko 03-06-2005, 13:18 the lodgemoor one sounds good as i live near there do you have contact details Emilyp 05-06-2005, 09:55 where are you based? am also keen on running but am not that great so have concerns re running club standard at mo - I run from my house round norfolk park most weeks - about 3 miles in total - you any where near there Donniedarko/or anyone else??
