View Full Version : Recommendations for finding a job?

Right so I am no longer a scrounging student and need to get myself a job. There must be other people who have found or are looking for work just out of uni. Where is the best place to look in Sheffield? I am after IT/Network support work but not 1st line telephone support (as the stupid people would drive me insane! :D ).

I have tried all of the websites jobserve, job centre, cw jobs etc and found a few good jobs but there must be more. Does anyone know if the local agencies (the ones with offices in town) have these sort of jobs as they mainly seem to offer general office work and the odd telephone support job? This is why I have so far concentrated my search online

Thanks for any response!

Looks like you're looking at the wrong end of the market on those websites.

start with Monster.com

Sorry - other 'favourites' are on the other computer

Edit: totaljobs.co.uk?
Reed.co.uk?

Thanks for the sites, I have them on my list but forgot to include them above. I think I am going about it in the right way but I also have the feeling there is probably a site that I haven't seen that has my ideal job on it! That maybe wishful thinking though!

Anderselite is my favourite - but it takes about half an hour to go through their registration process and they may be an engineering site.

Edit:they do have a IT section (http://www.anderseliteit.com/search.asp?sessionID=ADFAD79C-5CB8-442D-ACA3-E9192476E541)

try having a look at capgemini.co.uk, we are hiring graduates and have an office in rotherham (although you wouldn't necessarily be based there).

Very little work like that in Sheffield and if you have only just graduated you will be at the bottom of the list I am afraid. You either move to London to get some experience or lower your expectations.

It's also easier to get a job once you have a job, if you are not prepared to do first / second line support then you may just end up working in MacDonald's. Good luck finding a job you want but if Ladbrokes gave odds, I would bet against you!

Other agencies which I guess you will have tried are spring and tech and also check reeds web page.

Thanks for the confidence boost ;) but I guess you are just trying to be realistic! The only 4 people I know who have been looking for the same sort of jobs as me over the past few years have all managed to find something they are happy with. They have all started from the same position too.

I already have 15 months experience from a placement doing the sort of work I am looking for. It may be classed as first line support but it involved mainly hands on troubleshooting, installations, hardware support etc and very little actual telephone support. Calls were logged and then I would respond and fix the problem either over the phone, remotely or with a site visit (Is this 1st line support, as I thought that was just telephone?). On placement this paid 11k and I am only looking for 17k+ now which I think is achievable.

I haven't come to the forum in desperation just trying to make sure I am covering all the bases and aren't missing out on any jobs.

like I said, we are hiring. We have 1st and 2nd line support positions available at sites around Rotherham. I'm not sure if the graduate pay is that high, it used ot be higher, but I think we lowered it.

Thanks, I have had a look at the website and will draft an email later. It does say the graduate posts will be based elsewhere but then also mention they are flexible so I will see if I get a response. Thanks again!

:)

Do they usually come instanly because I didn't get one?

Slighlty O/T but it sounds like there might be some poeple who have looked for jobs just after leaving uni in the past. What happens when an employer wants a certain classification of degree and you haven't got the results yet? I wont find out what I have got for nearly 2 months and obviously dont want to wait that long to start applying.

just make a prediction, and tell them that it's your reasonable estimate of what you'll get.

What sector are you after? Let me know and i'll go through the list of agencies I have. If you register on www.jobs-quest.com and create a CV i'll put some jobs on there for you

Thanks, that is what I thought but just wanted confirmation from somone else. I could probably have got a lot more help from uni about all this but I haven't really had time with exams and revision!

IT wise - BT has a huge IT department in Sheffield. Apparently all of their recruitment is done through Hays

Well I have found www.jobserve.com to be pretty good (so far). After trauling all of the sites all day this is the only one to result in an interview for something that sounds ok.

My boyfriend found his perfect job as a IT Assistant at a company called Gripple in Sheffield on fish4.co.uk, however fish4 were advertising for another agency - management bank I think (try googling it for a website as I don't know the address!)

To update for anyone else looking for IT jobs, I take back what I said about JobServe. :) I have now wasted loads of time applying for jobs on there and apart from the one I got an interview for, nearly all of the rest seem to already be closed. A lot of the jobs auto renew once a week so they look fresh when in fact they went weeks ago. Reed is similar as well. The culprit seems to be a website called "Job Board" (I think) that employers or more regularly agencies can submit jobs to that then get sent round all the "round up" (ones that list jobs shown elsewhere) websites.

So while it takes more time the best method I have found is speculative letters and trawling all of the individual agencies. As well as looking at the vacancy pages of major companies that are always recruiting. Most of this was suggested earlier on here!

you might try cwjobs.co.uk that's fairly good.

and gojobsite.co.uk

Thanks! They are both already on my daily search list.

Trust me to choose a degree that prepares you perfectly for a career you can't get in to without 3+ years experience any more unless you start at shool leavers level. :( Plus it seems I missed the boat on the graduate vacancies. How do they expect you to finish your dissertation revise for exams and apply for graduate vacancies all at once. I am considering finding something that will look good on my CV to do until the graduate vacancies come round again. Probably not the best idea though.

weren't you advised to start applying for vacancies at the start of your final year, I was before I left. I think I applied for this job nearly a year before I started here.

No, we got told about the odd vacancy towards the end of the year. I assume they expected us to already know about how graduate roles were filled. So I guess that makes it my own fault for not finding out till too late. Most of the graduate roles aren't really what I want to do anyway, although I think I would get satisfaction from anything that uses the skills I have from my degree and placement. This is why I don't want be a call logger for a year or so, I don't think it will add anything to my CV as I had more responsibility and used more skills on placement, plus it would drive me insane.
