View Full Version : Frequency of washing hair

I hadn't washed my hair this week until today, spending instead the extra time on revision. Last night my hair was looking unusually vibrant. After showering this morning however, my hair became lifeless and felt horrible.
Does this mean I should be washing my hair less?
(I'll still be washing the rest of me, before anyone asks)

*sick of reading for exams*

There is some good advice on the Weight Watchers (TM and all that Malarkey) website :

http://www.weightwatchers.co.uk/util/art/index_art.aspx?art_id=8391&tabnum=1&sc=0&subnav=looking+fabulous

- see section 6 - which answers your question :

As often as you like. If your hair is dry, it may not be necessary to wash it more than once or twice a week, particularly if you live in a country where the air is clean. People who have greasy hair, or have jobs that mean they are working in a dirty atmosphere, will need to wash their hair daily.

City dwellers are living in a dirty environment and some work in hot air conditioned offices, so the hair gets dirty or dried out and needs regular washing. A mild shampoo, with a regular conditioning routine causes no harm to the hair at all when used daily. After all, we wash our bodies, so why not our hair?

Mine tends to get washed when it needs it, but usually about 3 times a week.

Some times I'll go for a few days without washing it if I'm lazy, ill or very busy. Other times, when I've been in a dirty environment, it'll get washed each day.

recently I finally started using a conditioner and that's made quite a bit of difference. :)

Oh, and don't wash it with Fairy Liquid like a housemate of mine did many years ago..... :)

I have very long hair and I am always touching it so I wash it every other day, unless I am ill that is.

I use a conditioner twice a week and I have a very sensitive scalp so I have to be careful what I use.

Every day for me! Twice a day if I am going somewhere special of an evening.

every other day for me, less if I can get away with it!

Despite having short hair which is easy to manage I still hate doing it:)

Every day :(

I'm looking forward to perms being fashionable again - needs washing less, and looks fine drip-dried instead of spending ages with a hairdryer :)

I wash it whenever I shower, so pretty much every day.

I did read something about hair actually being self cleaning, but you have to leave it for quite a while for the mechanism to kick in.

it takes a few weeks to self clean, you still rinse it with warm water but thats about it. i knew someone who done it and her hair looks great and healthy but for first few weeks it looked horrible.

i wash my hair everyday or if i am not going out anywhere i leave it. i find that if i can leave it a few days then when i wash it, it stays cleaner for longer!

My hair is awful, it's baby-fine, and gets greasy very quickly.

I have to wash it every day.

It's also got a curl to it, which makes it virtually unmanageable, I have to blow dry it, within an inch of its life, with gel etc to get an approximation of neatness :S lol

I love my hair colour, it's very blonde (natural) but I *so* wish it was as thick as my sister's hair; hers is really luxuriant.

I have a number one all over but still wash my hair every day, I have two shampoos: one bottle of head and shoulders and one of Morrissons combined shampoo and conditioner.
I find if not regularly washed the scalp goes to pot and there are few things grottier than horrific dandruff.

I wash mine about every two or three days, depending on whether or not I can get away with it, but less if I'm not going anywhere where I'll see anyone. I'm a big believer that washing (well, not so much washing, but drying and straightening) your hair REALLY damages it.

Edit: I can see why Swan_Vesta (or anyone else with short hair) would wash it every day - it's no hassle, doesn't need drying (or straightening, I presume!), and will be cut before any damage shows.

It's great BoroughGal - minimal maintenance, no faffing in the morning and to my mind looks good and tidy. My clippers have paid for themselves many times over and I use a lot less shampoo than i did when i had hair.
