does anybody know of this, and whether there is an active faction in sheffield?

I propose that if there isn't there should be!

it is in its rawest form a group of young individuals who arrange to go to a certain nightclub and ...
well, knit!

picture it, as the drunken yobs stumble through Kingdom, they come across a bunch of guys and gals sitting on their favourite sofas, knitting away

maybe even with some UV threads - to be sold on for a profit!

I think there is certainly a niche market in sheffield - and if this idea tickles anyone, they should certainly post here!

Knittings become REALY BIG in the US now, it's like a new fad all of a sudden, but not the way you explained it with the youths,
.
All sorts of unusual yarns are out now, not wools, mostly silks, furs (fun fur) as it's called, also using gold, silver silks, knitting on large needles like sizes 13-15, you can knit up a lovely boa
in a few hours, i have 4 going on this week.

Also people that haven't knitted before are doing it.

I could deffo knit a crap scarf, but if you start making me go round corners or anything like that, I'm stuck.

But, on the other hand, if we're only doing it to freak out e-heads then the crapper the scarf, the better....

So Malibu, I'll teach ya my limited skills...

hey don't knock pill-eds, they're silly but always friendly.

I dont think the quality of the knitting will be the question here - just the application.

hmmm my step-grandmother lives down the road...she knits/spins/etc. and her work is in london road gallery...I could organise a free tutorial for any young ambitious knit club members :D

I'm not knocking 'em..... freaking them out is just sport though!

And bring your grandma to the club - double the freak-out value!

The first rule of knit club should be - Nobody talks about knit club.

BoroughGal
02-06-2005, 14:29
And the second rule? (altogether now....)

Can you imagine the door staff when you try and walk in with foot long pointed steel and plastic rods?

"Knitting needles, hmmm? Yes, sure. On your bike....." :)

You'll need special needle holsters in your socks and undies.

was wondering whether they'd be considered offensive weapons??

the bag checks would be great for the look on the bouncers faces

If you want a purpose to your knitting classes you could all knit hats for people on chemotherapy donate them to the hospital, the cancer kids just love them.

Easy instructions, just GOOGLE CHEMO HATS, they''l give you plenty of patterns, just have to be no seams/no wool just soft yarns you can buy at a good yarn shop, round needles work the best for these.

What a fantastic idea !
Can you imagine anything more exciting or interesting than to be sat knitting with a group of other Sheffield folk ?
It certainly beats watching afternoon telly or decorating the bathroom and it could well be the new craze that sweeps the great British Public along.
The only danger is that people will get over-excited and stab each other with the needles or strangle each other with skeins of wool.

Less mindless plugging, more offering you an oppurtunity to knit for free with people who enjoy it!

knitting for cancer in night clubs could work?

or in fact knitting in night clubs and probably getting paid large amounts of money by clubbers too drunk/wrecked to realise that none of us could knit

sounds like a great little money maker

I've found that enbroidery is also on the up, on buses.

Scary shiznit !

But after all, why not, I've seen worst hobbies that knitting, or enbroidering (I swear I'm misspelling that).
I say any manual work (no pun intended) is the way forward, better than TV, or whatever.

Just to let anyone interested know - Sheffield Knitterati have been around for about six months now and have regular kipping (knitting in public) events. There is a regular meet on the last Friday of each month, 12 til 4pm in The HUBS (what was NCPM) on Paternoster Row. There is no charge.

We are also about to start a regular evening slot most probably first Tuesday or Wednesday of the month and most probably in The Showroom 6 til 8 and later depending on how dedicated you are.

On top of this we like to go along to local festivals and events for Knit-Pics, we ran the knitting area at Devonshire Jam some of you mentioned previously. No charge knitting at a no charge festival - can't really see the cheap plug there but hey! We also go to occasional gigs including Sheffield Stylophone Orchestra.

If you'd like to join us pm me and I'll give you the yahoo groups link alternatively of course you could just do a search.

oh ps. I love crochet too! crochetters and anybody else who does or is interested in pretty much anything involving needle & thread / textiles are very welcome too.
