It annoys me a bit when I get asked to sponsor things like this at work.
Yes you will be doing work for the kids in South Africa, but what it is really about is the kids from England having an experience that will look good on CVs and UCAS forms and I don't see why my business should pay for their holiday.
I did some work in Costa Rica after school and I worked to pay for my trip there.
kt1978 I dont think you understand the benefits from both sides, yes alright they will get a nice looking CV, but calling it a holiday is far from the truth. Being one of the members of a previous expedition to South Africa. I know what I can gain from it, but I also know what the village members in Lesotho also gain from it.....which is far more than the people going there.
I don't think the kids going there are thinking about the benefits to them...they are thinking I'm so proud to be given this oppotunity to help the disadvantaged. Just like I was.
We all do work for the money....they will be holding many fundraising events etc.... But sometimes generosity goes along way.
talktalk 04-12-2008, 10:50 kt1978 just to let you know kids have gone there for years with school and its no holiday also parents pay for the kids to go the money raised is for things thats needed in the village and for projects that they do . some of the days they are out 10 hours after walking to where there needed and working , this is made clear when you apply it is no HOLIDAY just a chance in a lifetime for kids to try and make a difference. we know not all people will want to help and thats fine but for those with a little extra money available its much appreciated .Maybe as your having your lavish Christmas dinners you could give a little thought for these people with very little in life but big smiles on there face when these kids arrive.
Maybe kt1978 it would have been nice for you to be able to go with them and see how other people live.
HAVE A GREAT XMAS
talktalk 04-12-2008, 11:06 just to let you know Prince Harry also does work for people in this area ,cheers
My daughter is also involved with something similar, due to go to South Africa in 2010. She have just signed up and started fundraising to raise money for the trip. We have not come across any negativity so far, rather more a reflection of the credit crunch which makes everyone less able to offer help such as sponsorship, jobs, etc. Everyone so far has wished us luck, but it is very early days. There will always be the odd cynical person I guess, don't let them get you down or detract from your goal. Happy to swap fundraising tips.
kt1978 Why can't you just be proud of the students who go out & help these people?
It might do you some good going out & helping, so you can see what effort goes into this kind of organising. I personally know 1 person who does a lot of the organising of this trip & has done for a number of years now & he's exhausted when he comes home. It's bloody hard work out there. How dare you say it's a holiday, when you don't know anything about it. Why can't you praise these kids & the adults who take them? At least the kids want to do it.
Hi talktalk. Good luck with trip. Have you tried asking Radio Sheffield for your help?
Maybe they can put it over the radio for any businesses who are willing to help.
What about Meadowhall? Anymore?
beansforyou 04-12-2008, 11:54 I wouldn't waste my energy worrying about the people who criticise you, they've obviously never needed any help in their lives or considered the greater good before themselves.
Good luck with your trip, it sounds great.

The place everyone is talking about is a vilage called Malealea in Lesotho. young people from City School and from Royston School in Barnsley go there to work hard and give assistance to people that have a hard life in comparison to the easy life so many people in this country have.
Woodthorpe Development Trust sponsored a couple of young people from Woodthorpe a few years ago to take part in this working "holiday". The young people came back with great understanding about poverty and needs and have since become accomplished students.
In total agreement with the quote above, many people would shy away from this project because it's far from a holiday, if you can contribute towards the project then contact City School it's a great adventure and needs your support not negativity.
talktalk 04-12-2008, 13:25 Thankyou for all your support for this great cause there are at least some kind people out there ,i know its a bad time because of the credit crunch but if you were to see a video from this trip it really puts things into perspective how lucky we are .Best wishes for xmas
talktalk 04-12-2008, 13:31 IF anyone as got any contacts with football clubs local celebs ect it would be great if we could get signed items ect to auction/raffle off towards the proceeds .Once again thankyou sooooo much
Berberis 04-12-2008, 13:55 Bloody hell, all i got was a trip to Draton Manor as a child, South Africa, seems a little excessive to me!
talktalk 04-12-2008, 14:07 hi serapis yes but how many people need helping in Draton Manor???????????????Exactly none you were on an enjoyable day out not there helping others !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its not about our kids its about others not everyone is all about themselves
Bloody hell, all i got was a trip to Draton Manor as a child, South Africa, seems a little excessive to me!
it is not a trip as you called it........it is an expedition. will people please stop calling this a holiday or/and a trip.
I am going to Zimbabwe in February, there is little sponcership availble but my church is giving some support to me. This kind of trip is certainly no holiday, each child who goes on this will be effected by what they see there and that will stay with them for the rest of their lives and hopefully change them from being selfish, self centered teenagers. The work is hard some of the people they have contact with will be very poor,or ill in some way. Some of the kids there have HIV and life is alot harder there than here.
I have been to both Africa and Brazil to work with Children what I saw has made me the person i am today.
On the subject of people being frustrated at being asked for cash to help get the kids out there.....
I'm sure the trip/expedition/whatever will be a significant event in the lives of those going, but I do find myself wondering:
How much will it cost per child to send out for a week/two weeks?
How much useful work can a visiting untrained/unskilled person do that couldn't be done for much less by the locals?
How much money would then be left over (if local workers did the work) to help pay for equipment etc etc?
Enough of me being super cynical, I sincerely hope the kids do learn from the trip and come back to fight for further support for the communities they visit.
If people come back from these trips thinking they've "done" their bit then they would have been better giving the money to a charity already involved in the area IMO.
Please don't misunderstand me... I really hope you do manage to get the kids out there, but I think the real work begins once they get home.
I'll see if I can find a few pounds somewhere for you.
talktalk 04-12-2008, 18:09 hi dafoot thanks for comments if life was that easy send someone a load of money and bang wallop the end it would be great . as well as taking out supplies, trees, equipment there is also other people going with years of experience in their field of expertise, they oversee things which are done using different methods which they have gained in their line of work .And yes maybe some things could work out ok doing this. kids that have been on this in previous years have gone onto do work for our own local community making it a better place for you and I to live , and hopefully giving them good standards for the rest of their life and then carrying this into parenthood and teaching their own kids that other people arnt as lucky as we are i think if more children and maybe adults could go on things like this maybe the world would be a better place and we all would be much kinder people.I was at a presentation evening last year from the last expedition and the kids got on stage to tell of their own experience and got part the way through and couldnt talk for there own emotions still with them one year on , it was so moving to see how this had touched there hearts .
It would be great if you could find it in you to donate or even buy a calender to show your support for this good cause . once again i must tell people that money raised is for the good causes and money to go is being paid by the parents. The children parents and teachers have been giving a lot of time up raising funds bag packing ,sponsored walks, bike rides, and other activities .
If you can take some kids from the local school round here and leave them there, well I will make a real sizeable donation
talktalk 04-12-2008, 19:33 daftlad im sure that could be arranged for a large sum lol
vickylisa 04-12-2008, 21:11 talk talk i think its great the kids knowing to help people that are less fortunate and im not critasising at all , but is it safe for the kids u hear so many horror stories about people helping out at places and getting hurt,
but i do hope u do alot of good work,
i also agree with other ss though when they say theres alot of people in the uk suffering and living on the streets kids also , w should be helping these people also
talktalk 04-12-2008, 23:04 the kids are quite safe there are quite alot of staff going also doctors . they have given their time and money up for this also to help the locals.i know we have a lot of people on the streets in this country which need help but i think they get more help than these people in sa, theres also alot of people out there by choice
StopnSmile 04-12-2008, 23:13 I did something similar to this many years ago
I went off to a home in India that catered purely for children with Polio
People said similar things to me - "why should we pay for your holiday" etc
I can assure everyone - it was nothing like a holiday.
I spent six months living like a local, washing in a bucket, sleeping on the floor and making the most of every little thing that came our way.
The experiace changed me life completely - I came back and had such a different view of the world that everything (even my job and career changed).
So to all you skeptics out there - dig deep and help out a good cause.
I worked liked crazy to rasie fund for my trip all those years agoandd anything i could do to help then please let me know
S x

LizG2008 09-12-2008, 14:05 Sorry to dig up an old thread and slightly hijack it but I have just come out of a meeting at City School and didn’t see the point in starting a new one when what I have to say directly relates to this one.
This scheme is not only running in 2 schools it is actually running in a further 4 in Sheffield (City, Chaucer, Myers Grove, Westfield and Fir Vale) and it is not necessarily just about our students going out to help in Africa. Those that are staying in the UK will also be gaining some valuable educational and business experience from this in the way they raise their funds and this is way to help that does not involved reaching into your pocket or purse.
All of these schools are trying to start up professional and fully sustainable companies to raise money rather than just sticking to the traditional bake sales and car washes. I’m currently looking for business people who are willing to volunteer some of their time to help get these students get started on their way to setting up these businesses. All the profits of which will either go back into their school or to the Malealea project. If any one would like more information please drop me a PM or e-mail me directly at liz.gillott@be-sy.co.uk
