What do you think the best park in Sheffield is?

Mine is Glen Howe Park, hidden away in Wharncliffe Side!

my personal favourite:

Crookes Valley park.

Tis beautiful, and has a big pond, and little playground and stuff.
Never any trouble there, the odd remnants of a barbecue but that is about it

the whole weston park/ponderosa/crookes valley park triangle is pretty cool.

Chelsea Park in Nether Edge is something of an undiscovered oasis.

Endcliffe Park I think....
wee stream for the dogs to cool off in. Lots of birds and other wildlife, great friendly atmosphere on a sunny day, and a great cafe (excellant vege sausage sandwiches)

Botanical Gardens.

Wins easily, it's the only park in Sheffield that receives national recognition.

Encliffe Park is quite cool as well

I lived near Graves Park for a number of years and thought it was great. Ecclesall Woods are brilliant.

I really liked sitting and chilling out in endcliffe park in the summer - but last time i went past it looked like a building site!

Now Meersbrook bank park - its really close to my house and has fantastic views over the city!

The botanical gardens are also very nice.

Wymil Dam - Forge Dam... they are all really nice i know they are not parks as such, but theres loadsa grass everywhere for you to chill out on.. Nice walk actually..

I would say the best 'official' park is Endcliffe, but Graves park is really nice and big too!

Endcliffe Park is OK, but over-rated and always too full of show-offy mums.

We go to the Bolehills in Crookes quite a bit, although the last few times there have been a few too many dodgy-looking teenagers there for my liking.

Spider Park in Lodge Moor is prety good - lots to keep the little ones busy.

Hillsborough Park's very good - decent play equipment, although it could do with having the graffiti cleaned up a bit.

Millhouses always goes down well - the cafe is a big attraction. Often wondered why they don't have a cafe like that in Hillsborough Park, but then I suppose it would feel obliged to serve blue pop, crisps and burgers rather than nice cakes and herbal tea, which would somewhat defeat the object.

Nice little playground at Bradfield - small and quiet, pleasant setting.

Meersbrook Park is my fave. It's really quiet and has amazing views.

It's lovely to sit on the top of the hill in summer, with a bottle of wine and watch the sun go down over Sheffield. Aaahhhhhh.

I like the park at the end of the world (known to most people as bolehill park).

Though I'm also very fond of running up the porter brook;
endcliffe park, bingham park, whiteley woods, forge dam - very nice.

We're very spoilt for choice in Sheffield - hope it stays that way!

On another note South Yorkshire Orienteers are putting on a series of park orienteering races on tuesday nights later this month and into July. Details on our website (via google). They're not very far and could be done as a nice evening walk around a park.

Totally agree. Meersbrook park is my local. The view is amazing, and I shall be there when the weather gets better to drink wine also!

Walked the length and back of Millhouses Park last weekend. Very busy, lots of activities for the kids. The old pool looked an eyesore though.

Walked throgh Ecclesall Woods the two Sundays running before that - the bluebells were fantastic.

Graves Park has lots to offer.

Meersbrook Park gets my vote for the best views of the city centre and the Peak district. Incredible panorama - best seen from just below the Bishop's House. Don't forget the walled garden is open to visitors too.

Botanical Gardens must be the winner. Was there four Sundays ago - and it is looking fantastic now.

But my favourite park has to be the listed Heritage Park at Norfolk Park. Cheap but nice meals can be obtained at the Centre in the Park. The views of the city are stunning. Lots of open green space. Great kid's activity area. Best visited in early spring when the daffodils are in bloom. Nice leisurely circular walk through the trees. Gets my top vote

Just go to this link and there's a map of all the City's Parks District local and City Parks

There are 80 parks and 10 local nature reserves managed by the Sheffield Wildlife Trust. This is addition to the Botanical Gardens and all of the City's allotments. Sheffield is one of the greenest City's in Europe.

My own favourite is the park of my childhood, Graves Park, but I now live just around the corner from Meersbrook Park with the wonderful Walled Garden.

(Walled Garden Party this Sunday 5th June 1-5 Free with Music , food and fun!)

I've been to Glen Howe Park on a number of occasions, though usually when I'm off on a walk up in that area (you can go right through it and then out into the countryside). It certainly is an undiscovered gem.

If you'd asked me a few weeks ago I would have said Endcliffe park and possibly Hillsborough, but recently I went to Graves Park for the first time and that seemed nice and expansive with plenty to offer for everyone.

also, interesting fact no. 1. the picture of sheffield on wikipedia was taken from the top of meersbrook park!

I agree with Carl_malibu, if you take Weston Park/Crookes Valley/Ponderosa together (as they are all right next to each other) then they make one hell of a park: three playgrounds, a lake, formal gardens, football and hockey pitches, great views, a museum (one day)... pretty much everything you need. For something a bit wilder, Forge Dams is great. I love Bolehills too, especially for the view.

There's also a nice little park out on the West edge of Sheffield. I think they call it the Peak District National Park, or something like that. It doesn't have swings though :(

We are just so lucky having so many parks and green area's to enjoy. I can often be seen in Graves Park and Millhouses but a couple of weeks ago went over to Endcliffe park and followed the stream up past Forge dam [great big cup of coffee] and then on up towards the top end of Ringinglow and the Round House.
Today I went over to explore Norfolk Park and thought that had the best children's play area that I'd seen in ages.
Coming home i sat at the viewing point near Heeley city farm and the Shakespeare pub which is a green area that is looking better and better as it becomes more well established. Next weekend I'm off to Ruskin park at walkley and may very well have a dawdle round the Bole Hills weather permitting.
As I said we're very lucky in Sheffield.

'Twas funny seeing that on The Full Monty when it was on TV recently, obviously filmed back in the days when the playground was more than a few stumps left poking out of the gravel.

Glen Howe Park is my 'local' park lol, and it is glorious, espescially on days like today.

Unless I missed it, no one has mentioned Rivelin park yet.... with its long walks through the woods, fishing ponds, Paddling pools (which the council curiously drain as soon as it gets a bit warm for repainting :loopy: ) cafe, and safe large play area, it's lovely, take a picnic and the kids swimming gear, a good book, and spend the day!

When I was a kid, we used to love Millhouses, the Lido's were the bee's knees....

And every summer holiday we would spend our saturdays behind the cafe in Endcliffe Park, fishing nets and jam sarnies, pagglin' n fishing....

glorious days :D

Lots of good choices mentioned already. Some which haven't been mentioned yet though:

The General Cemetery and Cholera Monument Grounds. Not strictly parks, but wonderful tranquil open spaces with interesting historical features. (See current ghosts thread.)

Manor Fields / Deep Pits. Used to be wasteland, but is currently being developed into an interesting open space. Has improved loads in the last 5 years and will be getting better over the next 5.

Brincliffe Park is a wonderful hidden oasis of calm.

Wandered up there today in the sunshine and it was so quiet I even risked taking my top off to sunbathe...

Managed 20 minutes before someone called the police.

After taking my car for its MOT on Sharrowvale Rd i then have to walk home to Crookes. I ususally wander up through the park and enjoy it. But today it was closed!!:o The note on the gate said that until further notice it would close at 4pm. :loopy:

Anyone know why this is?? And how long has it been happening??

It would have been lovely to walk through this eve, in the sun  and it is interesting to see what they have done everytime i go in.

Went up through Endcliffe park on Saturday all the way up to Porter Clough then returned down the Limb Valley which was a good walk.

My three local greenspaces are Weston/Crookes Valley/Ponderosa which are each great in their different ways.

Love walking up through Rivelin and the view from Bole Hill

But I'm with the OP on this one. Glen Howe is just great. I led a Fungi Foray in there when I was a Park Ranger - it is fantastic for mushrooms, especially some really interesting, nasty ones which kill. I also love the green space in the middle with the stonewalled shelter.

Never stopped to realise until reading these threads just how many nice parks we have, or is it had? I used to take my blanket and transistor radio (for Test Match Special) on nice sunny days when revision was the order of the day. I remember the bandstand concerts in Weston Park.
Millhouses Park in the 60's - the lido, boating lake, cricket pitch, trainspotting in the 60's was a 'big' day out, getting the tram to Millhouses Loop.
Endcliffe Park through to Whiteley Woods & Wire Mill Dam, wish I'd a £1 for every trip. Wonderful, and seemingly taken for granted!

How many parks in Sheffiels anyhow ?

According to this link....

there are 90 areas designated as parks in the Sheffield Metrpolitan District !!

Apologies for dragging this thread out of obscurity, in fact I was looking for the thread concerning possible building on Bolehill Rec (but couldn't find it) because I noticed noticed it is designated as a park on this map.

I lived across the road from Firth Park for 17 years; it was great inthe old days. A decent fair (no trouble) around my birthday at Spring Bank, and we didn't have to go across to the bonfire, we just had to climb out on to the bay window and watch the fire and the fireworks .... till the municipal bonfire died a death.

Had many a happy time in the paddling pool at Millhouses, and on one occasion the lido, I like Graves and Meersbrook cos I'm near them now, and Endcliffe is nice for a long walk and a change.

Graves Park is great...... has a lot to offer

The rare breeds animal section is wonderful

I love to walk through the park in spring and watch the squirrels.... the bluebells are stunning.

The only down side is the amount of dog mess to be found on the grassed areas by the car parks....

We are so lucky to have so many wonderful parks in our city
