View Full Version : Imagine - Heavy Metal In Baghdad
leviathan13 03-12-2008, 11:42 Did anyone else see last night's Imagine with Alan Yentob?
I feel so sorry for the geezers in that band. All they wanna do is play music and have fun, yet because of war, politics and religion, they've been split up and now living in different countries.
What are your thoughts on this?
By the way, the film 'Heavy Metal In Baghdad' is on at the Showroom on the 21st and 22nd December. I'm definitely going to have a look.
RedRocker 03-12-2008, 11:52 I was just about to post on this!!!! What an amazing programme!!! Just shows how much the US screwed Iraq!!! I really do hope that the guys sort it out, I dont know if the film that was made helped or hindered this band. Not too sure when Alan Yentob became the expert on music though!!!! He did that programme on the history of the guitar (from his opinion) totally missing out people who shaped guitar playing such as Eddie Van Halen, but favouring people like Johnny (dont bore me any more) Marr!!!

I agree.
I felt so sorry for them (which usually takes a helluva for me to feel that way about people) but all they wanted to do was just make music.
When you get the likes of Mariah Carey cancelling shows through 'exhaustion', it seems a bit soft when you compare it to these lads who are playing gigs and giving interviews while there's gunshots and mortar shells exploding, yet carry on because it's something they love doing.
I actually really liked their sound too. Reminded me of early Sepultura; really raw and powerful. Imagine what they'd sound like with proper recording equipment.
Powerage 11-12-2008, 15:07 I watched this with my OH we felt so sorry for them as well, it just makes you appreciate the freedom we have in this country to listen to and play any kind of music you wish.
I have to say I sometimes think that the Iraqi people were better off with Saddam at least they Knew who the enemy was.

I know what you're saying, and I agree. Better the Devil you know sometimes.
The film itself is on at the Showroom Cinema on Sunday and Monday 21st and 22nd December. I'm definitley giving it a watch.
melthebell 09-01-2011, 15:57 ive just watched the heavy metal in baghdad documentary and it really puts things into perspective.
imagine not being able to walk the streets freely, fear of death for wearing a slipknott tshirt and a goaty beard, bombs going off around you daily and seeing death all around daily. Imagine not being able to see your best friends and band members for 6 months as its not that safe to leave the house unless you really need to.
Imagine only playing 6 gigs in 5 years as its too hard to put gigs on.
Then finally having to move to another country where you are the lowest of the low, scum, and it barely having a heavy metal scene, just to try and scrape anything else together to keep your band going.
was a good watch, interesting but harrowing
Smack Jack 09-01-2011, 16:40 I heard a rumour that troops blast heavy metal out as a torture device.

Any metal head just needs to be naughty and get locked up. Was this mentioned?

on the religion / politics aspect of it.
They were ANTI political, they just wanted to rock but there was one point where one of the guys did speak out about the worlds media where they are trying to say its different types of muslims fighting and he stated catoorically its ********
he says him and his wife are sunni / shia and get on fine and there is no massive war between the varying factions.
he said most of the trouble came from the warlord militias and outside forces all congregating in iraq purely for fighting.
there was an underhanging bit of anger tho in them, specially at the end where they watched video of their "bombed" practice space (which was in a none terrorist residential area) for the first time.

I never said you were one Mel!;)
I remember one of the DJs at Sheffield Live got sent a CD of Iraqui metal to play on his show. It had been sent annonymously to avoid anybody involved getting traced through the show.
All very sad - I can't imagine a world where people are banned from making music.
